Art Talk: Street Art in Cincinnati, Ohio

In October I went to Cincinnati, Ohio for a work conference. As I walked around the downtown I noticed so many great murals.

Here is a look at some of the great Street Art in Cincinnati.

According to ArtWorks there are over 200 murals and 30 downtown. 1 I saw six of them.

ArtWorks employs professional artists who inspire and mentor diverse teams of youth, ages 14-21, helping them build 21st century career-readiness skills. These teams have completed more than 14,000 public and private art projects in its 25 years, including more than 200 permanent outdoor murals. 1

The Hands that Built Our City

Jenny Ustick
Location: 525 Elm Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202

This is the first mural I noticed as it was right on the walk from my walk from the hotel to the convention center.

This colorful mural highlights the hands of the workers featured in the famous Union Terminal mosaic murals by Winold Reiss, and was painted to mimic the look of real tile. 2

Martha, the Last Passenger Pigeon

John A. Ruthven
Location: 15 E. Eighth St, Cincinnati, OH 45202

This mural is incredible. When my friend Sara came to visit she parked right in front of it.

Here are couple from the evening before.

Marth, the last passenger pigeon, lived our her last days at the Cincinnati Zoo. She died in 1914. The mural is of Martha and her flock soaring over the historic bird run at the Cincinnati Zoo. 3

Here is a cool time-lapse video of the painting of the mural.

Mother's Bouquet

Ouizi Louise "Ouizi" Jones (formerly Chen)
Location: 15 E. Eighth St, Cincinnati, OH 45202

This beautiful mural shares the same parking lot with Martha the pigeon. I like the contrasting colors.

Ouizi is a Detroit-based artist that did one of her signature large scale floral murals for Cincinnati in 2019 for BLINK, which is a light based art festival. 4

Cincinnati's Table

Scott Donaldson

Location: 713 Vine Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202

This really cool mural is across the street from Marth and Mother's bouquet. I am glad that Sara parked here so I could see all these murals!

The details and colors of this mural were beautiful.

The Cobbler’s Apprentice Plays Ball

Tim Parsley

Location: 120 East Freedom Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202

This mural was inspired by one of Cincinnati’s most treasured painters Frank Duveneck and one of his most beloved paintings, “The Cobbler’s Apprentice.” The artists reinterpreted the original painting with a twist by adding a baseball bat, drawing inspiration from the proximity to the nearby riverfront stadium and Cincinnati’s important role in the history of baseball as the first professional American team. The original masterpiece can be seen as part of the permanent collection at the Taft Museum of Art. 5

I didn't know that Cincinnati had America's first professional baseball team. I did take a picture of the Red's stadium in memory of my mother, who LOVED baseball.

Armstrong

Eduardo Kobra

Location: 511 Walnut Street

This mural pays tribute to Armstrong, a Wapakoneta, Ohio native and at the time of its creation, was the largest project in ArtWorks’ 21-year history. Eduardo Kobra is world-famous Brazilian street artist, who completed this after wrapping up a massive mural in Rio for the 2016 Olympics. 6

Hope you enjoyed this little tour of some of the awesome street art in Cincinnati, Ohio.
