I sat at my desk in my office cubicle, chewing at the bottom of my pen, staring at Becky whose head was bent on her desktop pc as she typed furiously and fast. I'm angry at her…
Very annoying lady! Look at her big head! Well, officially she's my enemy now! Who does she think she is? She thinks she can waltz into this law office and attempt to take away my job from me?
I am the best paralegal and personal assistant to Marlee Coker, a senior partner in the law firm of Roberts & Landson. There are five top senior partners who determine how this firm is run, I work for one of them and I am proud of my work. Why would Marlee want to replace me with that, that skinny, ugly Becky? Argh!
I chewed some more on the bottom of the pen, fuming while shooting daggers from my eyes at Becky who was busy and did not notice the angry looks I was throwing her way. I am still deep in thought, imagining ways in which I could hurt Becky or pay her back for wanting to take my coveted position as a top paralegal in this firm, when David, the Human Resource Manager stopped by my desk.
"Stop that!" he barks at me and I blink twice, taking my eyes off Becky to give David my attention.
"What? Why do you interrupt my leisure time?"
"Leisure at work? Does that entail you killing Becky in your head because it's written all over your face!" The he sighed, "You should be thankful."
"Huh?" I could not believe what I just heard. "Why?!"
"Well, I shouldn't be telling you this, but she put in a good word for you. You have a promotion coming up in two weeks."
What? Promotion?
"When Coker informs you, act surprised, okay?" David said and walked away.
I could not even respond. I am to be promoted to the position of Head, Paralegal Section and it was all thanks to Becky? Why would she say anything good about me when I already thought the worse of her? How did I come about the dangerous assumption that she was in for my job?
Oh my gosh!
I hope you enjoyed reading this short story. Based on @shadowspub Word Prompt using the words: pen, enemy, and interrupt.
