MONOMAD - Sacrifice, suffering and fight for freedom (5 photos)

1.jpg

These photos were taken almost on top of Le Morne Brabant, a mountain located in the south-western corner of Mauritius. This basalt mountain is «only» 556 meters, but it was a challenge hiking to the top. The reward is this panoramic view. In 2008 it was added to UNESCO list of Heritage Sites, because of its historical and cultural significanse. Mauritius abolished slavery in 1835. Before that happened, runaway slaves established themselves in caves on this mountain. One day they saw soldiers comming toward the mountain. Because they didn't know that slavery was abolished, they thought they were going to be arrested. They all climbed to the top and jumbed off the mountain top and into their death. Le Morne has become a symbol of sacrifice, suffering and the fight for freedom.
