The city of Luang Prabang in Laos is a UNESCO Heritage Site, located by the Mekong River. It was the capital of Laos until 1560, when the capital was moved to Vientiane. This rather small city has at least 33 buddhist temples, which is enough to keep you busy for a couple of weeks. Beyond the temples, the city itself is a charming city with pleasant streets and buildings in the French colonial style.
