Es tradición católica que el miércoles santo de Semana Santa, la escultura del Nazareno salga a recorrer las calles del centro de las ciudades de todo el país, acompañado de una gran feligresía en procesión; pero este año, debido a la pandemia mundial por COVID-19 y que ha puesto al mundo entero en cuarentena para evitar contagios masivos, no se hizo como es costumbre. El Nazareno salió sin la procesión de sus devotos.
It is a Catholic tradition that on Holy Wednesday of Holy Week, the sculpture of the Nazareno goes out to walk the streets of the center of the cities of the whole country, accompanied by a great parishioner in procession; but this year, due to the world pandemic by COVID-19 and that has put the whole world in quarantine to avoid massive infections, it was not done as it is customary. The Nazareno left without the procession of his devotees.
En mi ciudad, Cumaná, sale el Nazareno desde la iglesia Santa Inés ubicada en el casco histórico y recorre las calles aledañas. Por años he hecho el recorrido de la ruta completa que antes era más larga y que de un tiempo para acá se ha ido reduciendo por la falta de luz en las calles y por la inseguridad a la hora de volver a las casas finalizada la procesión.
In my city, Cumaná, the Nazareno leaves from the Santa Inés church located in the historical center and runs through the surrounding streets. For years I've done the complete route that was longer before and that for a while has been reduced by the lack of light in the streets and by the insecurity at the time of returning to the houses after the procession.
Este año, el Nazareno salió de la iglesia a las 2:00 de la tarde, adornado con hermosas flores, montado en un camión con el sacerdote de la iglesia y pocos ayudantes a recorrer algunas calles vacías y otras en las que los fieles pudieron asomarse a las puertas y ventanas de sus casas para verlo de lejos y hacer sus peticiones.
This year, the Nazareno left the church at 2:00 in the afternoon, adorned with beautiful flowers, riding in a truck with the priest of the church and a few helpers to go through some empty streets and others where the faithful could look out the doors and windows of their houses to see him from afar and make their petitions.
El recorrido abarcó la mayor parte de Cumaná. En la zona donde vivo, el Nazareno pasó cayendo la noche, ya para regresar al templo.
Pude asomarme a la puerta de mi casa para ser testigo de un evento diferente, y que nunca me había imaginado. Este año no hubo procesión, los fieles que acostumbramos a salir para acompañar al Nazareno estábamos en casa, encerrados, viviendo, en medio del miedo y la incertidumbre, una cuarentena para mantenernos a salvo del coronavirus o COVID-19.
The tour covered most of Cumaná. In the area where I live, the Nazareno spent the night, already to return to the temple.
I was able to look out the door of my house to witness a different event, one that I had never imagined. This year there was no procession, the faithful who used to go out to accompany the Nazarene were at home, locked up, living, in the midst of fear and uncertainty, a quarantine to keep us safe from the coronavirus or COVID-19.
