WHO ARE WE
I'm Ilona Krylova from Ukraine, Kyiv. Oleh Kodak, my husband, and I have been married for 23 years. There are seven dogs, seven cats, and a gray crow in our household. They are full members of our family, which we call FrakiXata. I want to share with you the story of my family.
My husband and I graduated from the same institution of higher education. The National Technical University of Ukraine, "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" (NTUU KPI). Where we met while studying different courses. I graduated as an economist, but I always liked creative work. I drew pictures for myself and my friends. So I decided to do web design and worked in this field for more than six years. Oleh graduated in computer science and has a mathematical mindset. He worked as a network operations center engineer in a telecommunications company. But the real vocation we found a little later. Far from economics, web design, or computer science. Our creative and engineering abilities and knowledge of different fields helped us a lot in our lives.
WHAT OUR LIFE
It all started when one day on my way to work. I noticed a German Shepherd in poor condition in the parking lot. I started looking for organizations that could help me with it. That's how my husband and I entered the world of animal rescue. At first, we assisted other volunteers in transporting pets. We would drive out to help an animal in distress at any day or night. These trips took up almost all of our free time.
FRAKIXATA
One day on our way back from work, my husband and I took an unfamiliar road. It was a "Wrong Turn"...the dog, hit by a car, lay on the broken lines. We stopped in the middle of the road, set off the emergency alarm, and got closer. It was terrifying; my heart was pounding with excitement. We had never experienced a situation like that before. The dog allowed himself to be calmly picked up and loaded into the car. He was as if he understood that they wanted to help him. We took him to the vet clinic, where he received his needed care. He is Blo, our first pet, whom we picked up on the street. He had a broken hip and epilepsy. He lived with us for eight years, and we still remember him with warmth and love. More than 30 animals have passed through our doors and hearts since then. Some have managed to find new families, and some have stayed with us forever. We call our pet mini-shelter - FrakiXata.
EVE
I want to tell you about one of our charges which gave us the idea for our future family business. One summer, I drove to a large shelter near Kyiv to deliver some things to them. The worried shelter owner ran out to meet me and told me someone had dropped a large dog under their fence. It was a young Great Dane. The girl. She was extremely emaciated. A skeleton was visible through her skin. She was so weak that she couldn't hold her head up. Imagine that! I'm a girl weighing 110 lbs (50 kg) and was able to carry a Great Dane in my arms to the car. She weighed only 33 lbs (15 kg).
Eva(Eve) was her name. She was very ill, with issues with her knee joint and spine. Eva and we had a long road ahead, with numerous operations, costly long-term therapy, and extensive rehabilitation. We, at that time, had a lot of people supporting us. It was amazing how complete strangers came together to help one dog in need. Eva started walking on her own. Not very well, but on her own. That was about 15 years ago. In Ukraine, at that time, no one was treating such dogs, and they were euthanized. The story of Eva spread far beyond the borders of our country. Mind changed. Many people have changed their minds regarding keeping and treating disabled animals. Eva lived the rest of her life in love and care.
WHAT OUR JOB
At that time, in Ukraine, there were no means of rehabilitation, much fewer wheelchairs for dogs. I had to look for information about rehabilitation and treatment on foreign websites. That's when I learned that there were orthopedic aids for animals and even water treadmills! It was a discovery for me. I was inspired by the idea of creating a rehabilitation center for animals in Ukraine. After I did an estimate, I realized that this plan would require a relatively significant investment of funds, which we did not have. Back then, our government did not support the development of small businesses. It was impossible to get a loan. But the idea "help disabled animals with rehabilitation, care, and keeping" was formed and firmly rooted in my mind.
FRAKISHTAK
After Eva, other dogs with spinal injuries began to come to us. For one of these dogs, we ordered a wheelchair from the US. It was a lot of money for Ukraine. Still, we collected it thanks to the close-knit community of animal rescue volunteers. We made a wheelchair of our own for the following wards from improvised materials. For one more, we made an orthosis for a paw from fiberglass. Then we began to make other items for our pets. People found out about the wheelchairs and our other products and began to ask us to make for them, too. That's how our small family company Frakishtak® was born.
My "hobby" has evolved into our life's work. We came up with comfortable and practical pet cart models for any injury. My husband designed the drawings and did all the calculations, and we started our production. This year our company turned 11 years old. We have become manufacturers of some of the world's best wheelchairs and many other the highest quality orthopedic and hygiene products for animals. Our products have helped thousands of animals with various injuries return to everyday life worldwide.
But the war has made its adjustments. At the moment, our business is completely shut down. Our workshop is now a bomb shelter. The plant in Kyiv, where we ordered components for our carts, has been destroyed. The business of our partners at Borodyanka and Kharkiv has been destroyed. All logistics are broken.
THE WAR
When fighting broke out in Kyiv and on its outskirts, we, 03/08/22, left with all the pets for my father's village. It took us a long time to take this step. The animals helped us make this difficult decision - their lives are above all for us. If a missile or shell hits your house, it is impossible to leave the apartment quickly when you have so many animals. In the case of an air-raid alarm, it's impossible to get into a bomb shelter with so many pets. It's impossible to explain to the dogs that it's curfew now, and they won't be walking today. It is impossible to explain to the pets that their daily ration is half as much because there is no food in the stores, and they need to stretch out the food they have for as long as possible.
Thanks to my sister Kristina and her husband Vasya for providing us with their car. It was unreal to load all the animals in one of ours. Thanks to my nephew Sasha for bringing canisters of gasoline. There was nothing to fill the cars. Thanks to the animal rescue volunteers for providing us the pet food at their new place, which was enough for the first time. And, thanks to my dad for bravely putting up with our "zoo" at his house without betraying himself. I know it's hard for him, especially after he suffered a stroke.
Phewwww! We can exhale for now. The first week has passed since we arrived. We and all our pets are in a relatively safe place. Yes, several times a day, the air-raid alarm sounds. Combat planes fly over the house every day. Sometimes we witness air fight. Several downed cruise missiles lie in the fields and gardens around the village. However, it's much calmer than it was in Kyiv. But, most importantly, the pets have adapted. Dogs now walk regularly according to the schedule. A regular regime is more or less established for all animals. Only we, humans, remain to adapt to the new place and new reality. But it is already much more difficult.
PLANS FOR HIVE
All in all, we took with us 15 pets, and one more dog has been added to us at a new place, overall:
- 8 dogs - Diesel, Ray, Zoya, Rada, Martha, Sue, Buffy, and Pushok(Fluffy);
- 7 cats - Pulya(Bullet), Butch, Riddick, Kirk, Rambo, Rocky, and Margo(Margot);
- we have a gray crow - Gavrusha.

We could share with you our experiences in caring for such animals. One of our exciting pets is the gray crow Gavrusha. He is very active, funny, and intelligent. Gavrusha doesn't let us be depressed for a minute and keeps us all in good spirits during this challenging time for our family. We would also like to share some moments from his life with you.
And what without hobbies. Yes. Duties to our pets and working for the good of all animals take up all our time and energy. Yes. There is no work now. But, there is a war, which has added new worries. So hobbies have taken a very low priority. But still... I used to draw and take a little bit of photography, and I am interested in astronomy. Oleh is a Subie fun; he worked on building a precise handled and settled riding 350+ hp ForeSTIer before the war. He was also involved in restoring an old adobe house built-in 1918. Together, we loved the outdoors with tents. Perhaps we can find the energy and time to share stories about it with you.

QUIÉNES SOMOS
Soy Ilona Krylova, de Ucrania, Kyiv. Oleh Kodak, mi marido, y yo llevamos 23 años casados. En nuestra casa hay siete perros, siete gatos y un cuervo gris. Son miembros de pleno derecho de nuestra familia, a la que llamamos FrakiXata. Quiero compartir con ustedes la historia de mi familiar.
Mi marido y yo nos graduamos en la misma institución de enseñanza superior. La Universidad Técnica Nacional de Ucrania, "Instituto Politécnico Igor Sikorsky de Kiev" (NTUU KPI). Allí nos conocimos mientras estudiábamos diferentes cursos. Me gradué como economista, pero siempre me gustó el trabajo creativo. Hacía dibujos para mí y mis amigos. Así que decidí dedicarme al diseño web y trabajé en este campo durante más de seis años. Oleh se graduó en informática y tiene una mentalidad matemática. Trabajó como ingeniero del centro de operaciones de red en una empresa de telecomunicaciones. Pero la verdadera vocación la encontramos un poco más tarde. Lejos de la economía, el diseño web o la informática. Nuestra capacidad creativa y de ingeniería y nuestros conocimientos en diferentes campos nos ayudaron mucho en nuestra vida.
LO QUE NUESTRA VIDA
Todo empezó cuando un día de camino al trabajo. Me fijé en un pastor alemán en mal estado en el aparcamiento. Empecé a buscar organizaciones que pudieran ayudarme con él. Así fue como mi marido y yo entramos en el mundo del rescate de animales. Al principio, ayudábamos a otros voluntarios a transportar mascotas. Salíamos en coche para ayudar a un animal en apuros cualquier día o noche. Estos viajes ocupaban casi todo nuestro tiempo libre.
FRAKIXATA
Un día, al volver del trabajo, mi marido y yo tomamos una carretera desconocida. Era una "Wrong Turn"... el perro, atropellado por un coche, yacía sobre las líneas rotas. Nos detuvimos en medio de la carretera, activamos la alarma de emergencia y nos acercamos. Fue aterrador; mi corazón latía con fuerza por la emoción. Nunca habíamos vivido una situación así. El perro se dejó coger tranquilamente y subir al coche. Era como si entendiera que querían ayudarle. Lo llevamos a la clínica veterinaria, donde recibió los cuidados necesarios. Es Blo, nuestra primera mascota, que recogimos en la calle. Tenía una cadera rota y epilepsia. Vivió con nosotros durante ocho años, y todavía lo recordamos con cariño. Más de 30 animales han pasado por nuestras puertas y corazones desde entonces. Algunos han conseguido encontrar nuevas familias, y otros se han quedado con nosotros para siempre. Llamamos a nuestro mini refugio de mascotas: FrakiXata.
EVE
Quiero hablarles de uno de nuestros encargos que nos dio la idea de nuestra futura empresa familiar. Un verano, me dirigí a un gran refugio cerca de Kyiv para entregarles algunas cosas. El propietario del refugio, preocupado, salió corriendo a recibirme y me dijo que a alguien se le había caído un perro grande debajo de la valla. Era un gran danés joven. La chica. Estaba extremadamente demacrada. Un esqueleto era visible a través de su piel. Estaba tan débil que no podía sostener la cabeza. ¡Imagínate eso! Yo soy una chica que pesa 50 kilos y pude llevar a un gran danés en brazos hasta el coche. Ella sólo pesaba 15 kg.
Eva(Eve) era su nombre. Estaba muy enferma, con problemas en la articulación de la rodilla y la columna vertebral. A Eva y a nosotros nos esperaba un largo camino, con numerosas operaciones, una costosa terapia de larga duración y una extensa rehabilitación. En aquel momento, teníamos a mucha gente que nos apoyaba. Fue increíble cómo completos desconocidos se unieron para ayudar a un perro necesitado. Eva empezó a caminar por sí misma. No muy bien, pero por sí misma. Eso fue hace unos 15 años. En Ucrania, por aquel entonces, nadie trataba a esos perros, y se les practicaba la eutanasia. La historia de Eva se difundió mucho más allá de las fronteras de nuestro país. Cambio de mentalidad. Muchas personas han cambiado de opinión respecto a la tenencia y el tratamiento de animales discapacitados. Eva vivió el resto de su vida con amor y cuidados.
LO QUE NUESTRO TRABAJO
En aquella época, en Ucrania, no había medios de rehabilitación y mucho menos sillas de ruedas para perros. Tuve que buscar información sobre rehabilitación y tratamiento en páginas web extranjeras. Fue entonces cuando me enteré de que había ayudas ortopédicas para animales e incluso cintas de correr en el agua. Fue un descubrimiento para mí. Me inspiró la idea de crear un centro de rehabilitación para animales en Ucrania. Después de hacer una estimación, me di cuenta de que este plan requeriría una inversión relativamente importante de fondos, que no teníamos. Por aquel entonces, nuestro gobierno no apoyaba el desarrollo de las pequeñas empresas. Era imposible conseguir un préstamo. Pero la idea de "ayudar a los animales discapacitados con la rehabilitación, el cuidado y la manutención" estaba formada y firmemente arraigada en mi mente.
FRAKISHTAK
Después de Eva, empezaron a llegarnos otros perros con lesiones medulares. Para uno de estos perros, pedimos una silla de ruedas a Estados Unidos. Era mucho dinero para Ucrania. Aun así, lo conseguimos gracias a la estrecha comunidad de voluntarios de rescate de animales. Para los siguientes hicimos una silla de ruedas propia con materiales improvisados. Para uno más, hicimos una órtesis para una pata con fibra de vidrio. Luego empezamos a fabricar otros artículos para nuestras mascotas. La gente se enteró de la existencia de las sillas de ruedas y de nuestros otros productos y empezó a pedirnos que hiciéramos también para ellos. Así nació nuestra pequeña empresa familiar Frakishtak®.
Mi "afición" se ha convertido en el trabajo de nuestra vida. Se nos ocurrieron modelos de carros para mascotas cómodos y prácticos para cualquier lesión. Mi marido diseñó los dibujos e hizo todos los cálculos, y empezamos nuestra producción. Este año nuestra empresa ha cumplido 11 años. Nos hemos convertido en fabricantes de algunas de las mejores sillas de ruedas del mundo y de muchos otros productos ortopédicos y de higiene de la más alta calidad para animales. Nuestros productos han ayudado a miles de animales con diversas lesiones a volver a la vida cotidiana en todo el mundo.
Pero la guerra ha hecho sus ajustes. En este momento, nuestro negocio está completamente cerrado. Nuestro taller es ahora un refugio antibombas. La planta de Kyiv, donde pedíamos los componentes para nuestros carros, ha sido destruida. El negocio de nuestros socios en Borodyanka y Kharkiv ha sido destruido. Toda la logística está rota.
LA GUERRA
Cuando estallaron los combates en Kyiv y en sus alrededores, nosotros, el 08/03/22, nos fuimos con todos los animales domésticos al pueblo de mi padre. Nos costó mucho tiempo dar este paso. Los animales nos ayudaron a tomar esta difícil decisión: sus vidas están por encima de todo para nosotros. Si un misil o un proyectil impacta en tu casa, es imposible salir rápidamente del apartamento cuando tienes tantos animales. En caso de alarma antiaérea, es imposible entrar en un refugio antibombas con tantas mascotas. Es imposible explicar a los perros que ahora hay toque de queda y que hoy no saldrán a pasear. Es imposible explicar a las mascotas que su ración diaria es la mitad porque no hay comida en las tiendas, y que necesitan estirar la comida que tienen durante el mayor tiempo posible.
Gracias a mi hermana Kristina y a su marido Vasya por facilitarnos su coche. Fue irreal cargar todos los animales en uno de los nuestros. Gracias a mi sobrino Sasha por traer bidones de gasolina. No había nada para llenar los coches. Gracias a los voluntarios del rescate de animales por proporcionarnos la comida para mascotas en su nuevo lugar, que fue suficiente para la primera vez. Y, gracias a mi padre por aguantar valientemente nuestro "zoo" en su casa sin traicionarse. Sé que es difícil para él, sobre todo después de haber sufrido un derrame cerebral.
¡Uf! Podemos exhalar por ahora. Ha pasado la primera semana desde que llegamos. Nosotros y todas nuestras mascotas estamos en un lugar relativamente seguro. Sí, varias veces al día suena la alarma antiaérea. Los aviones de combate sobrevuelan la casa todos los días. A veces presenciamos combates aéreos. Varios misiles de crucero derribados yacen en los campos y jardines que rodean el pueblo. Sin embargo, la situación es mucho más tranquila que en Kiev. Pero, sobre todo, las mascotas se han adaptado. Los perros ahora salen a pasear con regularidad según el horario. Un régimen regular está más o menos establecido para todos los animales. Sólo nos queda a nosotros, los humanos, adaptarnos al nuevo lugar y a la nueva realidad. Pero ya es mucho más difícil.
PLANES DE LA HIVE
En total, nos llevamos 15 mascotas, y se nos ha añadido un perro más en un nuevo lugar, en general:
- 8 perros: Diesel, Ray, Zoya, Rada, Martha, Sue, Buffy y Pushok (Esponjoso);
- 7 gatos - Pulya(Bala), Butch, Riddick, Kirk, Rambo, Rocky, y Margo(Margot);
- tenemos un cuervo gris - Gavrusha.

Y qué sin aficiones. Sí. Los deberes con nuestras mascotas y el trabajo por el bien de todos los animales ocupan todo nuestro tiempo y energía. Sí. Ahora no hay trabajo. Pero, hay una guerra, que ha añadido nuevas preocupaciones. Así que los pasatiempos han tomado una prioridad muy baja. Pero aún así... Solía dibujar y hacer un poco de fotografía, y me interesa la astronomía. Oleh es un aficionado a los Subie; trabajó en la construcción de un ForeSTIer de más de 350 CV de manejo preciso y de conducción asentada antes de la guerra. También participó en la restauración de una antigua casa de adobe construida en 1918. Juntos, nos encantó el aire libre con tiendas de campaña. Tal vez podemos encontrar la energía y el tiempo para compartir historias sobre él con usted.
