MAYNIA

Maynia? What is this strange and wondrous thing?

In November 2018 the @freewritehouse hosted #NovemberMadness, in March 2019 #MarchMadness was born, and now in 2020 we are doing it again in the form of #Maynia.

⭐️But, what is it?⭐️
Maynia is a month-long writing challenge in which aspiring writers try to write 50,000 words towards a complete story by the end of May. The daily goal is approximately 1613 words, though you can do more or less each day as long as you reach the golden 50,000 mark.

⭐️Isn't that just NaNoWriMo?⭐️
Indeed it is! But with a twist. Each day a writing prompt will be posted; it could be a word or an image -- something to inspire you and further your story.

In previous Madness rounds, that prompt would be @mariannewest's daily #freewrite prompt. This time the prompt will be different. You might even want to use both! It's up to you. You may not want to use the prompt at all -- that's okay too. It's completely optional.

⭐Okay... so how does including a prompt work?⭐️
Example: you want to write a story about someone battling through apocalyptic times after a pandemic ravaged the world. You have a main character in mind and a basic goal for them, but not much else.

One day the prompt is, for example: art museum. How will you interpret the prompt for your character and story? Will they sneak into a decaying art museum, get into a fight outside, have to find something nearby, or will they merely stroll past on their way elsewhere... only to get ambushed by someone lurking inside! Maybe another character simply talks about one. Your imagination is your only limit.

The prompt is designed to take your story in a direction it otherwise may not have gone. To take you out of the familiar and think about other scenarios, or emotions, your characters may experience.

How to join in:

State your intention in the comments on this post and you'll be added to the Maynia spreadsheet.

When May the 1st arrives, check the @freewritehouse for the daily prompt post.
I'm aiming to post at 12:00am AEST -- 7:00am PDT -- each day.
As a result of timezones, Day #1 may be April 30th for some and May 1st for others.

Write, write, write!

On each daily post, leave a comment with your daily written word-total. The count will be added to the spreadsheet.

Feel free to write posts detailing your writing experience, sharing excerpts of your progress, or even sharing your rough draft if you so desire. If you write a post, please use the #Maynia tag so we can find it easily and upvote it!

Ending May 31; results will be posted first week of June.
