Beyond Doubt: Whispers of the Unseen - Chapter 45

Beyond Doubt (2).jpg

Welcome to my seemingly endless journey.
A trip that will take you to places I might have visited many moons ago.
It´s a tale that came back to me when I meditated on one of my past lives. A life I told you about in my unbelievable true story.

As promised in that story I will now share this story with you.

Chapter 45

Dear Reader, have you noticed life offers these impossible choices, with which you can only go wrong.

Fortunately, they don't happen too often, but every life has a number of "Sophie's choices" in store for its participants.

It is up to you to choose which choice is the least harmful and I promise you the following, whatever you choose will never be the right one.

You will wonder for a lifetime what if I......

"Then it dawned on me that I was for the first time, I was his slave and accepted that role. I accepted it because I did not know any better."

"The realization that this might not be normal slowly dawned on me while I was sitting there. Memories of how life was before with Mom came back out of nowhere, but then my blood turned cold. The stranger made some insinuations about my body, whether uncle didn't like fondling my breasts and other things that I don't want to repeat.”

“Uncle made it very clear to the man to keep quiet, but that didn't happen. He's a cruel man, but he's never touched me in a way I didn't want. Of course the hitting and such, but he never touched my own things. Uncle became furious when the man continued to laugh."

“Oh calm down old man, I will show you, said the stranger as he walked outside. I fled to this place and looked past the bulkhead to see what was about to happen."

"The man walked down the stairs, then my uncle appeared in the doorway. It was a black shadow, against a dimly lit background. The fear froze me. I didn't know what the man was planning to do, but I was old enough to imagine some things."

"My uncle stood there and did nothing, while the man came towards me. Then I see my uncle's right arm rise and for a moment something glitters next to his ear. Then the strange man falls down."

"My uncle buried him that night and came to wake me the next morning as if nothing happened. I also pretended not to have noticed anything, but now I knew what he was capable of. He's not afraid to kill, it doesn't bother him."

"My revelation from the previous night got twisted by this event, he uses me as a slave but protects me like a father. I was scared, angry, and grateful at the same time. Now you see my dilemma. I didn't dare to run anymore. He saved my life, so I can't kill him. But I can't spend the rest of my life like this waiting for him to die.”

We all listen in absolute silence to this young woman's story. Even though she has been silent for several minutes, we are still to impressed to speak.

It´s as if her words continue to haunt our minds and we do not dare not say anything, as anything we could say wouldn't do justice to her story. Unlikely as it was, it was Rechmana who broke the silence. He puts his arm around the woman and says, "friend."

There is something that connects those two souls, perhaps the fact that they have no one in this world. Or maybe they fear the world in a similar matter.

Perhaps she feels the long period of loneliness that both have experienced in each other. One thing is clear, she recognizes something of herself in the other, ever since that first time.

My eyes go from Rechmana to Numico and back, but no one says anything.
It seems an impossible task. How could we help this young woman? I can see in my companions' eyes that they are also struggling with this issue. Escape is impossible; we have no mounts. We too would be tracked down if this man is really as good a hunter as this young woman says.

That would leave one option, it would mean we would have to face him. Like Cabilah we had no intention of killing him, but using Retsj to bluff our way out is also far too great a risk. We would have to look over our shoulders day and night out of fear that he would deal with us one by one.

“I don't like this situation. I don't like it when a question has no answer. How do you see it?”

My question is answered first by Numico. “As far as I'm concerned, we'll do whatever it takes to free her from that monster in there,” Numico says grimly. “I mean, he's no match for Retsj.”

Retsj looks toward the log cabin, his gaze lingers on it for a few seconds, then he looks at Cabilah. Her black hair falls in long strands along her face, hiding her deep eyes, but not enough to hide the sadness they radiate. Her sharp nose sniffs several times as she swallows her last tears.

Retsj's gaze is tense. He feels the pressure that his appearance brings upon him. It's a choice he shouldn't have to make. How clearly he has made it known that he has an aversion to violence. Neither Numico nor Cabilah should expect this from him.

Before I can respond, it's Cabilah who apparently senses his tension. “Retsj is it?”

“Rechmana actually, ma'am,” the big man replies.

“You don't have to use force; I couldn't ask that of you. That's not an option. I don't want to put you gentlemen in a difficult situation. This conversation alone does me so much good. Somehow I was hoping that someone would think of a solution that I hadn't thought of yet. But I've been thinking for years, and if I can't find the answer, how can I expect it from you?" She means us but looks solely at Retsj when she says you.

"Still, I had to try it. Only hope keeps me going and gives me the strength in the morning to face the day.”

I listen to her words, but it is beyond my honor not to find a solution to this issue, we cannot ignore this. Deciding the matter by force benefits no one. I only see one option, we have to win him over.
