Share Our World: Sverd i fjell

Sverd i fjell or Sword in Rock is a sculpture by Fritz Roed just outside of Stavanger, Norway.

The three swords are made of bronze and stand 32 ft 9+1⁄2 in (10 m) high. They don't look so big until you are standing right next to them. In the middle picture below you can scroll in and see the people next to the swords.

They are placed into stone at Møllebukta, a bay in the Hafrsfjorden. It was a very beautiful place looking out to the water.

It is significant that they are placed right on the water as it is commemorating the great naval Battle of Hafrsfjord in which Harald Fairhair declared himself King and united Norway.

The battle took place Between 872 and 900 and the monument erected in 1983. It was interesting to me to look out an imagine a battle in the water that made such a lasting impact that I would be drawn to its banks and learn some Norwegian history over 1000 years later.

I am so grateful for the peace and beauty that surrounded me the whole time I was traveling through Norway.

A closer look at the sword shows crowns at the top. The tallest for King Harald Fairhair who then ruled for 52 years.
