After watching Zack Snyder's cut of the Justice League and seeing a great improvement to what we have been offered, or even what we would have been offered if he had his version released as a two or even three hours movie. I started thinking of other movies that would have been better had they had an extended cut or were straight-out T.V shows.
This is my list of five movies that should have been T.V shows.
5- Tenet
This case can be made for plenty of Christopher Nolan's movies if I am being honest. The Prestige, Interstellar, Inception, and even Dunkirk. However, Tenet seems to be the best suited to fit for T.V show more than it does a movie.
Tenet's ambitious concept was often too complicated to keep up with. The concept alone felt like it needed way more breathing room.
That's not the only issue. The lack of time chasing the concept created a lack of characters to care about. Essentially, we didn't know any of the characters really. So, this created hours of a complicated concept while having no character to really care about.
A few more hours would have served Tenet. It would have helped its concept be more understandable and its characters to be more fleshed out.
4- Dune
If you have read my review of the movie, this will not come as a shock to you. Now, I know it was made with a sequel in mind. But, the way I see it, that proves my point even further.
Movies aren't the same as T.V shows. They're meant to be conclusive in their message from the time they start to the time they finish. Dune failed to do that. It gave us what often seemed a rushed series of events.
Even if the Dune sequel turns out to be great. It will not change the fact that it had picked the wrong medium.
3- Fight Club
While the previous two were picked as there were certain unsatisfactory aspects to them. Fight Club left behind a world worth exploring beyond the main story of it.
Thematically, the movie didn't leave much to be desired. However, it has created a mess behind worth seeing. What happens to anarchists when they lose their leaders? How would the world handle the aftermath of deleting the debts? How would the government handle the aftermath?
Those are all questions worth chasing. If Mr. Robot had taught anything in the aftermath of its first season, it would be that those themes should have been explored.
2- The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Although similar to many superheroes movies, this movie tried to do the impossible by introducing a world, all the characters in it with powers. So, full assembly, background tracks, and the main plot all within less than two hours.
That creates big friction. Watching this movie felt like watching a kid who prepared pointers for their class presentation but then realized they had to do it all within a time limit.
Everything in the movie felt rushed, hard to keep up with, with some scenes seemingly out of place.
A conversion of this movie into a TV show might be the best way to have gone. Maybe now is the chance as we don't seem to have enough superheroes projects existing today.
1- Sucker Punch
There really seems to be an issue with Zack Snyder movies when it comes to limiting a movie's time. This argument was obviously made for Justice League. It can also be made, and it has been made, for Watchmen. You could practically put most of Snyder's filmography here and you wouldn't be wrong. Army of the Dead has already proven it needs an extension.
However, for me, Sucker Punch is definitely the movie that needed it the most. This movie was torn into shreds by critics. While similar things have been said about Snyder's works, none of them came close to how bad it was for this movie. The reason for that is Sucker Punch walked a very thin line.
The movie has created a beautiful cinematography world, something that shouldn't shock anyone who has watched any of Snyder's work. This movie was made to be a feminine anthem, so much so that the script convinced actress Emily Browning to halt her retirement to do the movie.
I have a lot to say about this movie specifically, first of all, I would encourage anyone reading to watch or rewatch the movie while bearing in mind the revelation about Hollywood's exploitation of women.
The cuts forced upon Zack Snyder for this movie to be shown to certain demographics were the reason it failed its messaging.
Spoiler ahead of you want to watch the movie
Believe it or not, the studio saw it more appropriate for the main character, Baby Doll, to be tricked into having sex rather than consent to it.
Spoiler Over
Between the exploration of the Inception-like world and the powerful messaging it had which were ruined by its cut. I conclude Sucker Punch to be a movie that should have been made into a TV show, as it had too much to say in a movie form.
