In the world of the Mafia, empires fall so that another empire can emerge. It is a constant in the real world of crime and as such is shown in works of fiction brought to film and television. Gomorrah has come to a definitive end. A thrilling journey I have lived since its first episode, charged with emotions and a lot of death. I have a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, as always happens to me when a series I like comes to an end. Sad because a fascinating story comes to an end and happy because they have given it a worthy closure.
Warning: this post contains spoilers. I will talk about the fifth and last season of the series, if you have never seen it, you may learn important things.
En el mundo de la mafia caen imperios para que surja otro imperio. Es una constante en el mundo real del crimen y como tal se muestra en las obras de ficción llevadas al cine y a la televisión. Gomorra ha llegado a su fin definitivo. Un emocionante viaje que he vivido desde su primer episodio, cargado de emociones y mucha muerte. Tengo un sentimiento de tristeza y alegría al mismo tiempo, como siempre me pasa cuando una serie que me gusta llega a su fin. Triste porque una historia fascinante llega a su fin y feliz porque le han dado un cierre digno. Aviso: este post contiene spoilers. It's incredible to think that seven years have passed since I saw the first episode of Gomorrah. A series created by Roberto Saviano, inspired by his own book and adapted long ago to film. He is a man who specializes in controversial subjects and especially in the Neapolitan Camorra. There are other film and TV adaptations of his books.
In my feed you will find the review of other of the movies and series adapted from the books, but in this post I just want to focus on what for me is one of the best series, entering my long list of the best of all time. Now that it is completely over, I hope that many other people will discover this gem of television made in Italy.
Those of us who have followed the series, have had to wait two years for this fifth and final season, although there is a movie in the intermission, which must be seen because it serves as an anchor between the fourth season and the fifth. Movie that tells us the life of Ciro and everything that happened after the tragic end of the third season. You can read my review of the movie L'Immortale here.
It makes me funny to remember the brief post I did before the premiere of the fourth season, which was in 2019 and I titled it There is life After Ciro, it was something brief, the series would have continuity and the character of Patrizia had stolen my heart. I loved that character, an amazing woman, but then I had to vent all my anger in another writing. Because the end of the fourth season left me devastated. It was the actress's decision to leave her character and her fate in the series was the same as most of the characters, death always falls on everyone's shoulders, there is no one untouchable.
What now? Was my question, while I felt a hatred towards Gennaro Savastano's character, for the way he betrayed the people who were always loyal to him. I always liked Ciro's character more and this is when the twist in the story takes place, something in which actor and director Marco D'Amore had a lot of influence. He directed the film about his character, resurrecting him from his apparent end, growing within that universe, the legend of Ciro The Immortal. Ciro was alive! There was the answer to my question. Ciro was back, we would not only see his beginnings and misfortunes as a child, we would also see an immortal who was actually a dead man in life, tormented by having lost all the people he loved.
His return was inevitable, to close the whole story...

Es increíble pensar que han pasado siete años desde que vi el primer episodio de Gomorra. Una serie creada por Roberto Saviano, inspirada en su propio libro y adaptada hace tiempo al cine. Es un hombre especializado en temas controvertidos y especialmente en la Camorra napolitana. Hay otras adaptaciones cinematográficas y televisivas de sus libros.
En mi feed encontraras la crítica de otras de las películas y series adaptadas de los libros, pero en este post sólo quiero centrarme en la que para mí es una de las mejores series, entrando en mi larga lista de las mejores de todos los tiempos. Ahora que ha terminado por completo, espero que muchas otras personas descubran esta joya de la televisión made in Italy.
Los que hemos seguido la serie, hemos tenido que esperar dos años para esta quinta y última temporada, aunque hay una película en el intermedio, que hay que ver porque sirve de anclaje entre la cuarta temporada y la quinta. Película que nos cuenta la vida de Ciro y todo lo que sucedió después del trágico final de la tercera temporada. Puedes leer mi crítica de la película L'Immortale aquí.
Me hace gracia recordar el breve post que hice antes del estreno de la cuarta temporada, que fue en 2019 y lo titulé Hay vida Después de Ciro, fue algo breve, la serie tendría continuidad y el personaje de Patrizia me había robado el corazón. Me encantaba ese personaje, una mujer increíble, pero luego tuve que desahogar todo mi enfado en otro escrito. Porque el final de la cuarta temporada me dejó destrozada. Fue decisión de la actriz dejar su personaje y su destino en la serie fue el mismo que el de la mayoría de los personajes, la muerte siempre recae sobre los hombros de todos, no hay nadie intocable.
¿Y ahora qué? Era mi pregunta, mientras sentía un odio hacia el personaje de Gennaro Savastano, por la forma en que traicionó a las personas que siempre le fueron fieles. Siempre me gustó más el personaje de Ciro y es aquí cuando se produce el giro de la historia, algo en lo que tuvo mucha influencia el actor y director Marco D'Amore. Dirigió la película sobre su personaje, resucitándolo de su aparente final, haciendo crecer dentro de ese universo, la leyenda de Ciro El Inmortal. ¡Ciro estaba vivo! Ahí estaba la respuesta a mi pregunta. Ciro volvía, no sólo veríamos sus inicios y desventuras desde niño, también veríamos a un inmortal que en realidad era un muerto en vida, atormentado por haber perdido a todas las personas que amaba.
Su regreso era inevitable, para cerrar toda la historia...
The fall of the king
From the beginning, the story revolved around Gennaro (Genny) and Ciro (The Immortal). The first heir to the empire, son of Pietro, the man who ruled Secondigliano. Gennaro would grow up loving and hating his father to the point of betraying him to become the King. Ciro was like an older brother, always thinking of all the things they would do together, sharing power, something that would not happen because for Genny there could only be one King.
The foundations of this relationship are laid in the first season. Ciro, who was a street child, gained the Savastano's protection and became one of their most loyal soldiers. He thought his brotherhood with Genny would move him up the ladder of power, but fate had in store for him a war with Pietro and the love/hate relationship with Genny.
The Immortal
When Gennaro learns that Ciro is alive, he feels joy, but he also knows that they can never be together. Just as it happened with his father, a character he becomes more and more like, becoming what he hated. Genny loves Ciro, but the power brings out the bad feelings and makes him make certain decisions that lay the groundwork for the main story arc of the last season.
The last of the Savastano must regain the power lost to the Levante clan. A cornered Savastano is more dangerous and Genny has no scruples, he is someone willing to do anything. But rumors that Ciro is alive spread, becoming another threat. Ciro has become a legend, the impossible has happened, for some, like Sangre Blue, the immortal is a God, for whom he is willing to sacrifice himself.
La caída del rey
Desde el principio, la historia giraba en torno a Gennaro (Genny) y Ciro (El Inmortal). El primer heredero del imperio, hijo de Pietro, el hombre que gobernaba Secondigliano. Gennaro crecería amando y odiando a su padre hasta el punto de traicionarle para convertirse en el Rey. Ciro era como un hermano mayor, siempre pensando en todas las cosas que harían juntos, compartiendo el poder, algo que no sucedería porque para Genny sólo podía haber un Rey.
Las bases de esta relación quedan marcadas en la primera temporada. Ciro, que era un niño de la calle, se ganó la protección de los Savastano y se convirtió en uno de sus soldados más leales. Pensó que su hermandad con Genny le haría ascender en la escala de poder, pero el destino le tenía reservada una guerra con Pietro y la relación de amor/odio con Genny.
El inmortal
Cuando Gennaro se entera de que Ciro está vivo, siente alegría, pero también sabe que nunca podrán estar juntos. Al igual que ocurrió con su padre, un personaje al que se parece cada vez más, convirtiéndose en lo que odiaba. Genny ama a Ciro, pero el poder hace aflorar los malos sentimientos y le hace tomar ciertas decisiones que sientan las bases del arco argumental principal de la última temporada.
El último de los Savastano debe recuperar el poder perdido ante el clan de los Levante. Un Savastano acorralado es más peligroso y Genny no tiene escrúpulos, es alguien dispuesto a todo. Pero los rumores de que Ciro está vivo se extienden, convirtiéndose en otra amenaza. Ciro se ha convertido en una leyenda, lo imposible ha sucedido, para algunos, como Sangre Blue, el inmortal es un Dios, por el que está dispuestos a sacrificarse.
The war
The final season could not be exempt from that great confrontation destined to occur as long as both characters were still alive. The total war between the two sides. The Savastan at the command of Secondigliano and The Immortal striking hard blows so that it falls and that the empire is now ruled by the soldiers, by all those who have always worked for others.
An idea a bit socialist and that in reality is unfeasible, in the world of crime there will always be a central power. The death of a boss is immediately solved with another one occupying the throne. In a world of power-hungry criminals, the one who possesses the strength and the money will assume control for a while, until another one rebels and decides to go to war. A recurring problem in the mafia world.
This confrontation is what makes the last season so special and makes it a masterful ending to the story. The two boys who have grown up together, who love each other like brothers, in a war in which they will hurt each other badly.
Gennaro has it all back. Even his family, though Azurra is disgusted, is still loyal to his son's father. He has become what he hated the most, because he has decided to accept his destiny in life. Ciro, who since childhood has accumulated tragedies that have taken away everything important in his life, has nothing left to lose, he knows he is only living a reprieve, but his legend will live on indefinitely.
La guerra
La última temporada no podía estar exenta de ese gran enfrentamiento destinado a producirse mientras ambos personajes siguieran vivos. La guerra total entre los dos bandos. Los Savastan al mando de Secondigliano y El Inmortal asestando duros golpes para que caiga y que el imperio sea ahora gobernado por los soldados, por todos aquellos que siempre han trabajado para otros.
Una idea un poco socialista y que en la realidad es inviable, en el mundo del crimen siempre habrá un poder central. La muerte de un jefe se soluciona inmediatamente con otro que ocupa el trono. En un mundo de criminales ávidos de poder, el que posea la fuerza y el dinero asumirá el control durante un tiempo, hasta que otro se rebele y decida ir a la guerra. Un problema recurrente en el mundo de la mafia.
Este enfrentamiento es lo que hace que la última temporada sea tan especial y la convierte en un final magistral de la historia. Los dos chicos que han crecido juntos, que se quieren como hermanos, en una guerra en la que se harán mucho daño.
Gennaro lo tiene todo de nuevo. Incluso su familia, aunque Azurra está disgustada, sigue siendo leal al padre de su hijo. Se ha convertido en lo que más odiaba, porque ha decidido aceptar su destino en la vida. Ciro, que desde niño ha acumulado tragedias que le han arrebatado todo lo importante en su vida, ya no tiene nada que perder, sabe que sólo está viviendo una prórroga, pero su leyenda vivirá indefinidamente.
Death and pain
Every mob war is filled with death. One thing I loved about last season, is that there were still some characters whose downfalls affected me emotionally. Not to the level of leaving me shattered like Patrizia's death was, but it was a lot of character deaths that I liked.
The void left by other characters who are no longer in the series was satisfactorily filled with the inclusion of Maestrale and his wife Donna Luciana. A married couple that will help Gennaro in difficult times, aspiring to share power, but with Genny nothing is certain and any betrayal is paid for with life. Donna Luciana reminded me a bit of Patrizia, being a woman inside the Camorra, but she also has certain characteristics that will remind us of Gennaro's mother. So it was easy for me to feel sympathy for these characters.
Sangre Blue could not be missing in the last season, just like Ciro he is a dead man walking, he has lost everything and that's why he joins Ciro, so that together they unleash hell in that criminal paradise that Genny has taken over. Sangre Blue doesn't care what happens to him, he is another immortal.
Munaciello is a new character, unpleasant, but with physical characteristics and behavior that make him unforgettable. He is a rat, who takes the side that benefits him the most. Treachery seems to run in his blood, he is someone who should not be trusted, he only seeks his benefit and climb in his position of power.
It is one of the seasons with more deaths, eliminations of an entire criminal clan in an extraordinary sequence. I advise not to get attached to any character, because Gomorrah is one of the series where there are many deaths in each season. I would like to know the total number of deaths in the five seasons and the movie, I think it must be among the bloodiest series.
Muerte y dolor
Toda guerra de la mafia está llena de muertes. Una cosa que me encantó de la última temporada, es que todavía había algunos personajes cuyas caídas me afectaban emocionalmente. No al nivel de dejarme destrozado como lo fue la muerte de Patrizia, pero fueron muchas muertes de personajes que me gustaban.
El vacío dejado por otros personajes que ya no están en la serie se llenó satisfactoriamente con la inclusión de Maestrale y su esposa Donna Luciana. Un matrimonio que ayudará a Gennaro en los momentos difíciles, aspirando a compartir el poder, pero con Genny nada es seguro y cualquier traición se paga con la vida. Donna Luciana me recordó un poco a Patrizia, al ser una mujer dentro de la Camorra, pero también tiene ciertas características que nos recordarán a la madre de Gennaro. Así que me resultó fácil sentir simpatía por estos personajes.
Sangre Blue no podía faltar en la última temporada, al igual que Ciro es un muerto andante, lo ha perdido todo y por eso se une a Ciro, para que juntos desaten el infierno en ese paraíso criminal del que se ha apoderado Genny. A Sangre Blue no le importa lo que le pase, es otro inmortal.
Munaciello es un nuevo personaje, desagradable, pero con unas características físicas y un comportamiento que lo hacen inolvidable. Es una rata, que toma el lado que más le beneficia. La traición parece correr por su sangre, es alguien en quien no se debe confiar, sólo busca su beneficio y escalar en su posición de poder.
Es una de las temporadas con más muertes, eliminaciones de todo un clan criminal en una secuencia extraordinaria. Aconsejo no encariñarse con ningún personaje, porque Gomorra es una de las series donde hay muchas muertes en cada temporada. Me gustaría saber el número total de muertes en las cinco temporadas y la película, creo que debe estar entre las series más sangrientas.

These words are spoken by Gennaro to Ciro in the last episode. When he has already lost all his power and his destiny is not clear. One of them has already triumphed, but still has a dead soul, the other has lost, but still has his family, whom he wants to protect.
In that scene I stopped the playback, for a few minutes my mind searched for memories of the first seasons, Ginny's formation as a mob boss and all of Ciro's tragedies. With those images of the past in my mind, those words take on a greater meaning.
Rivers of blood, betrayal and misfortune. A journey into the depths of the Neapolitan mafia, with countless parallel stories that showed how crime affects all aspects of society, was coming to an end.
An ending that would shatter the heart and this time forever. An inevitable final sequence, because all the path built all these years, was for these characters to end as they began, united, like brothers, in the same destiny.
Secondigliano will continue to be ruled by another family that will surely take power. The kings may be dethroned, but the kingdom will live on. Musical notes and a scene by the sea, tears and a last sigh, masterfully close this story.
Love for the family prevails, debts must be settled, fate will be cruel for all. Tragedy, pain and finally the peace they longed for. Together, like two brothers. A fade to black that makes Gomorrah one of the best series of the last decade.

Queríamos comernos el mundo y el mundo nos devoró Genny Savastano
Estas palabras las dice Gennaro a Ciro en el último episodio. Cuando ya ha perdido todo su poder y su destino no está claro. Uno de ellos ya ha triunfado, pero aún tiene el alma muerta, el otro ha perdido, pero aún tiene a su familia, a la que quiere proteger.
En esa escena detuve la reproducción, durante unos minutos mi mente buscó los recuerdos de las primeras temporadas, la formación de Ginny como jefa de la mafia y todas las tragedias de Ciro. Con esas imágenes del pasado en mi mente, esas palabras adquieren un mayor significado.
Ríos de sangre, traiciones y desgracias. Un viaje a las profundidades de la mafia napolitana, con innumerables historias paralelas que mostraban cómo el crimen afecta a todos los aspectos de la sociedad, llegaba a su fin.
Un final que destrozaría el corazón y esta vez para siempre. Una secuencia final inevitable, porque todo el camino construido todos estos años, era para que estos personajes terminaran como empezaron, unidos, como hermanos, en un mismo destino.
Secondigliano seguirá siendo gobernado por otra familia que seguramente tomará el poder. Los reyes podrán ser destronados, pero el reino seguirá vivo. Notas musicales y una escena junto al mar, lágrimas y un último suspiro, cierran magistralmente esta historia.
El amor por la familia prevalece, las deudas deben ser saldadas, el destino será cruel para todos. Tragedia, dolor y finalmente la paz que anhelaban. Juntos, como dos hermanos. Un fundido a negro que convierte a Gomorra en una de las mejores series de la última década.
Sangre Blue, Patrizia (imposible olvidarte), Gennaro, Ciro... personajes que se hicieron inmortales.
