I had an enjoyable time watching La Daronne. I recognize that the film could have been better and that it is held up to a greater extent by the performance of Isabelle Huppert, a French actress who whatever she does, always manages to make her characters stand out. That's what she does in the film, she takes over the screen when she transforms into La Daronne.
Filmmaker Jean-Paul Salomé is a director and screenwriter who has made films in a variety of genres: romance, horror, war, and so on. He is a commercial filmmaker, ideal for this type of story. It is the writer's most successful novel, receiving several awards for it. It was only a matter of time before it was adapted to the big screen. The movie is from last year, but it wasn't until a couple of days ago that I was able to see it.

Creo que las intenciones con La Daronne eran hacer una película ligera. Aunque tiene como trasfondo una trama policial y el mundo del narcotráfico, tiene numerosas escenas de humor, que gracias a la interpretación de la actriz, son efectivas, ante lo absurdo que pueden parecer varias situaciones.

Antes de darles una breve explicación del argumento, informo que la busques en los servicios de straeaming o VOD que tengas contratados por los diferentes títulos que tiene, dependiendo de tu país. Yo la encontré por su título original La Daronne, pero en otros lugares se ha titulado Mamá Weed o Mamá María, ¿por qué ocurre esto? No tengo ni idea, es cosa de las distribuidoras, siempre he pensado que las películas deberían mantener su título original independientemente del idioma. Pero quienes toman estas decisiones son personas con años de experiencia en la industria. ¿Quién soy yo para objetar estas decisiones?
What is the plot of La Daronne?
Patience Portefeux is a middle-aged woman who works as an interpreter for the police. Her father was Algerian. She has two daughters in college and her ailing mother is in an expensive residential complex for the elderly. She is currently having an affair with Philippe, the commander of the unit where she works as an interpreter for the wiretaps installed on the phones of Arab traffickers in the city and also interprets during interrogations. But her heart still belongs to her husband, who died 20 years ago. She is a bit tired of her job, of seeing how small immigrant smugglers are persecuted and of the economic problems that pile up. She owes a debt to the place where her mother is hospitalized. My opinion
The plot is simple. An ordinary person, who is tired of years of doing a job that allows him to live well, but has an emptiness inside. She needs something to look forward to and at the same time to solve some financial problems.
Patience Portefeux's character is a mature, educated and intelligent woman, who had a happy life, but after losing her husband 20 years ago, she feels that her life wanders between routine, taking care of her mother and listening to the life conversations of young traffickers looking for a way to make a quick buck.
The character's past is something important, she is the daughter of an Algerian immigrant who when she arrived in France had to do illegal things to be able to feed her family. It was the only option she had. That is why she feels sympathy for some of those traffickers she overhears in the conversations recorded by the police.
It is determinant to know this, to find the explanation of the motives that the protagonist has to do what she does. She owes a debt to the place where her mother is confined, but she is not a poor woman. She belongs to the upper middle class. She lives in a large private apartment complex, her daughters study and work, they lack nothing. For those of us who are from the third world and know real poverty, the character is actually very well off financially.
So you have to take into account the character's origins, his past, where he comes from and also the ennui and emptiness he seems to feel. He has a boring life and wants to turn it all around, making a difficult, daring and dangerous decision. Stealing a shipment of hashish and using her knowledge of Arabic languages to become the new queen of drug trafficking.
Thus is born La Daronne, a nickname given to her by the same traffickers with whom she must negotiate and the police are desperate to find out who this new trafficker who acts with impunity is. Similar to the transformation of Walter White into Heisenberg in the Breaking Bad series, but without reaching those levels of genius.
The movie is funny, it has situations that made me laugh, of course it is not a comedy that makes you burst out laughing. It has French-style black humor, with some scenes that can be a bit far-fetched, but as I said in the introduction, it is the great performance of the actress that makes the implausible believable.

La trama es sencilla. Una persona normal y corriente, que está cansada de años de hacer un trabajo que le permite vivir bien, pero que tiene un vacío en su interior. Necesita algo que le ilusione y que al mismo tiempo le solucione algunos problemas económicos.
El personaje de Patience Portefeux es una mujer madura, educada e inteligente, que tuvo una vida feliz, pero tras perder a su marido hace 20 años, siente que su vida deambula entre la rutina, el cuidado de su madre y escuchar las conversaciones de la vida de los jóvenes traficantes que buscan la forma de hacer dinero rápido.
El pasado del personaje es algo importante, es hija de una inmigrante argelino que cuando llegó a Francia tuvo que hacer cosas ilegales para poder alimentar a su familia. Era la única opción que tenía. Por eso siente simpatía por algunos de esos traficantes que escucha en las conversaciones grabadas por la policía.
Es determinante conocer esto, para encontrar la explicación de los motivos que tiene la protagonista para hacer lo que hace. Tiene una deuda con el lugar donde está recluida su madre, pero no es una mujer pobre. Pertenece a la clase media alta. Vive en un gran complejo de apartamentos privados, sus hijas estudian y trabajan, no les falta de nada. Para los que somos del tercer mundo y conocemos la pobreza real, el personaje está en realidad muy bien económicamente.
Así que hay que tener en cuenta los orígenes del personaje, su pasado, de dónde viene y también el hastío y el vacío que parece sentir. Tiene una vida aburrida y quiere darle la vuelta a todo, tomando una decisión difícil, atrevida y peligrosa. Robar un cargamento de hachís y utilizar sus conocimientos de lenguas árabes para convertirse en la nueva reina del narcotráfico.
Así nace La Daronne, un apodo que le ponen los mismos traficantes con los que debe negociar y que la policía está desesperada por averiguar quién es esta nueva traficante que actúa impunemente. Similar a la transformación de Walter White en Heisenberg en la serie Breaking Bad, pero sin llegar a esos niveles de genialidad.
La película es divertida, tiene situaciones que me hicieron reír, claro que no es una comedia que te haga estallar a carcajadas . Tiene humor negro a la francesa, con algunas escenas que pueden ser un poco rebuscadas, pero como les decía en la introducción, es la gran interpretación de la actriz la que hace creíble lo inverosímil.
What drives an ordinary person to cross the boundaries of the law? Wow that's a great question. If it were a movie about revenge, well I would understand and I would tell you that even I would be able to cross that boundary. But when it's for economic reasons or because of an inner emptiness, having a boring life, etc., I find it hard to find justification.
I have gone through a difficult period economically, I live in a country full of poverty and crime, but it has never been an option for me to cross the limits of the law. It is something very ingrained in me to comply with the law. I think you have to have a bit of psychopathic thinking to get to that point. These are things that carry a lot of risk and most people who transgress the law will be caught and punished sooner or later.
La Daronne doesn't want to send any moral message, it just wants to be a fun movie, to have a good time. But at the same time I inevitably question the actions of the character, who doesn't mind selling a large amount of drugs that will end up on the streets, being consumed by young people, increasing violence and crime in the poorest areas of the city.
Although I like the character, thanks to the actress, and I wanted everything to go well for her, because it is a fiction. At the same time, it made me reflect on the consequences for society and all the collateral damage caused by the decision taken by the protagonist, who seems to forget that she is the mother of two young girls who may be exposed to try this drug that circulates in the streets of the city.
The filmmaker and the author of the original novel put me in a difficult situation, I loved the character but I also felt rejection for what she does. Since this is a dramatic comedy, in the end it made me take it all in stride.
I loved the look that the protagonist uses to negotiate and go to the meetings with the traffickers. The actress is over 60 years old, she could be my mother, but I still see her beautiful, after seeing her in so many movies, from the older ones, where the beauty of youth made her stand out, now the beauty of a mature and experienced woman makes her more attractive.
What many viewers may see as negative is the way the drug dealers are portrayed, all a bit idiotic, very easy to enter into negotiations with a total stranger and that she manages to control at her convenience. Likewise the role of the cops, most of them very dumb, who seem impossible to figure out who La Daronne is, will they find out, will they catch her, will they catch her? But I remind again that this is a light film, with drama and comedy, with no pretensions other than to be a little entertaining.
Do I recommend it? Yes, I had a great time watching it. It was a moment of distraction and served to clear my mind after watching other movies with more intense stories. If you are just looking for an entertaining French movie, La Daronne is a good choice.
¿Qué lleva a una persona corriente a cruzar los límites de la ley? Vaya que es una gran pregunta. Si fuera una película sobre la venganza, pues lo entendería y te diría que incluso yo sería capaz de cruzar ese límite. Pero cuando es por motivos económicos o por un vacío interior, tener una vida aburrida, etc, me cuesta encontrar justificación.
He pasado por un periodo difícil económicamente, vivo en un país lleno de pobreza y delincuencia, pero nunca ha sido una opción para mí traspasar los límites de la ley. Es algo muy arraigado en mí cumplir con la ley. Creo que hay que tener un poco de pensamiento de psicópata para llegar a ese punto. Son cosas que conllevan mucho riesgo y la mayoría de la gente que transgrede la ley será descubierta y castigada tarde o temprano.
La Daronne no quiere enviar ningún mensaje moral, sólo quiere ser una película divertida, para pasar un buen rato. Pero al mismo tiempo cuestiono inevitablemente las acciones del personaje, al que no le importa vender una gran cantidad de droga que acabará en las calles, siendo consumida por los jóvenes, aumentando la violencia y la delincuencia en las zonas más pobres de la ciudad.
Aunque el personaje me gusta, gracias a la actriz, y quería que todo le fuera bien, porque es una ficción. Al mismo tiempo, me hizo reflexionar sobre las consecuencias para la sociedad y todos los daños colaterales que provoca la decisión tomada por la protagonista, que parece olvidar que es madre de dos chicas jóvenes que pueden estar expuestas a probar esta droga que circula por las calles de la ciudad.
El cineasta y el autor de la novela original me pusieron en una situación difícil, amaba al personaje pero también sentía rechazo por lo que hace. Como se trata de una comedia dramática, al final hizo tomármelo todo a la ligera.
Me encantó el look que utiliza la protagonista para negociar e ir a las reuniones con los traficantes. La actriz tiene más de 60 años, podría ser mi madre, pero la sigo viendo guapa, después de verla en tantas películas, desde las más antiguas, donde la belleza de la juventud la hacía destacar, ahora la belleza de una mujer madura y experimentada la hace más atractiva.
Lo que muchos espectadores pueden ver como negativo es la forma en que se retrata a los traficantes, todos un poco idiotas, muy fáciles de entrar en negociaciones con una total desconocida y que ella logra controlar a su conveniencia. Igualmente el papel de los policías, la mayoría de ellos muy tontos, que parecen imposibles de averiguar quién es La Daronne, ¿lo averiguarán? ¿La atraparán? Pero vuelvo a recordar que es una película ligera, con drama y comedia, sin más pretensiones que las de ser un poco entretenida.
¿La recomiendo? Sí, me lo pasé muy bien viéndola. Fue un momento de distracción y me sirvió para despejar la mente después de ver otras películas con historias más intensas. Si sólo buscas una película francesa entretenida, La Daronne es una buena opción.

Es una tarea titánica, pero si realmente te gusta el cine, te encantará viajar en el tiempo y repasar películas de los años setenta y ochenta. Si no quieres ir tan al pasado, porque no llevas en la sangre disfrutar de grandes joyas del cine francés, puedes empezar por la película de Michael Haneke La pianista, que es de 2001. ¡Vamos! Todo lo tienes a un clic, yo tuve que alquilarlas en videoclubs y no me dio pereza mental hacerlo.

La Daronne es otra historia en la que gente corriente toma malas decisiones en un momento de su vida, pasando de ser un ciudadano ejemplar a infringir la ley y convertirse en un delincuente. Esta vez la protagonista es una mujer de unos cincuenta años, que después de veinte años de sentir un vacío tras enviudar, cree que es el momento de dar un cambio radical a su vida y volver a sentir la felicidad de vivir a plenitud.
Espero que les guste esta película. Si conoces la trayectoria de Isabelle Huppert y te gusta la actriz, disfrutarás de la película, aunque no es una película impactante, pasarás un rato agradable, si sabes valorar todos sus puntos positivos.
