Night in Paradise is the new production from South Korean filmmaker Park Hoon-jung, who returns to tell us a story of gangsters and revenge, a theme he has tackled in his previous films. I remember seeing in 2013 the excellent New World.
The film has all the hallmarks of the action-revenge thrillers made in that country. One thing I love about those films is the rawness in showing violence. It's something that Hollywood almost doesn't dare to do, and even less in these times. That's why, when they remake Asian movies, they never reach the same level of the original.
Mafia organizations, ruthless criminal bosses, hand-to-hand fights, car chases, shootouts and massacres without fear of extreme scenes and lots of blood. That's why I love this kind of movies. Where anything can be a weapon, a few car keys, a glass, etc. Any object becomes a weapon in many Asian movies of this genre.
For example (Warning! May be a little Spoiler) The protagonist stunned after a vehicle collision, can be trapped inside the van and twenty men trying to kill him and any object inside the vehicle becomes a weapon to defend himself. That's how intense this South Korean thriller is.
What attracted me most was the tone of the film, where the protagonists seem like lost souls and the feeling of being doomed in a world where they have no hope.

Night in Paradise es la nueva producción del cineasta surcoreano Park Hoon-jung que vuelve a contarnos una historia de gangsters y venganzas, tema que ha abordado en su fimografia pasada. Recuerdo que vi en el año 2013 la excelente New World.
El film posee todas las características de los thriller de acción y venganza hechos en ese país. Algo que me encantan de esos film es la crudeza al mostrar la violencia. Es algo que Hollywood difícilmente se atreve a hacer, menos en estos tiempos. Por eso cuando hacen remakes de películas asiáticas, nunca llegan a estar al mismo nivel de la original.
Organizaciones mafiosas, jefes criminales despiadados, peleas cuerpo a cuerpo, persecuciones en autos, disparos y masacres sin temor a las escenas extremas y con mucha sangre. Por eso amo este tipo de películas. Donde cualquier cosa puede ser un arma, unas llaves de auto, un vaso, etc. Todo objeto se convierte en un arma en muchas películas asiáticas de este género.
Por ejemplo (¡Cuidado! Puede ser un pequeño Spoiler) El protagonista atontado después de una colisión de vehículos, puede quedar atrapado dentro de la camioneta y veinte hombres intentando matarlo y cualquier objeto dentro del vehículo se convierte en un arma para defenderse. Así de intenso es este thriller surcoreano.
Lo que más capto mi atención fue es el tono del film, donde los personajes protagonistas parecen almas pérdida y el sentimiento de estar condenados en un mundo donde no tienen esperanzas.
What is the plot of Night in Paradise?
Tae-gu is a member of a criminal clan and other clans seem interested in hiring him. He has a sister with a serious illness and a little nephew whom he loves very much. Those two important people in his life are killed, apparently by order of the Bukseong clan boss, so he decides to take justice and revenge, killing the boss of that gang. After doing so, he must go into hiding for a while, heading first to Jeju Island, where he will be given shelter by an arms dealer who lives with his young niece Jae Yeon, a girl suffering from a terminal illness who has already attempted suicide. The plan is to stay there for a week and then go to Russia for a while. But the Bukseong clan with the new manager wants justice and soon Tae-gu's boss will be forced to turn him in. The hunt is on. I think the movie is pretty good. But my opinion is biased, because I love this kind of movies. I have said it many times, violence in cinema and gore scenes produce me a state of excitement.
It is not a perfect movie. I dare say that New World is far superior. Although as usual with this director, there is a little excess in its length. The film is just over two hours long and one or two scenes could have been shortened.
You have to be willing to accept the elements of this genre and the criminal culture depicted in the film. For those who don't watch much Asian cinema, some of the events, behaviors and attitudes of the characters may seem absurd.
We have to get rid of that chip that Hollywood has implanted in our minds and open ourselves to see films from other countries, with cultures absolutely different from the ones we are used to seeing.
Some time ago I recommended to someone who expressed in a post, being bored with American cinema, to watch Asian cinema. That person told me that he didn't like it because it was a very exaggerated cinema, what? An absurd answer. That kind of person is so alienated by Hollywood that he is not even consistent with what he says.
El film me parece lo suficientemente bueno. Pero mi opinión esta sesgada, porque amo este tipo de películas. Lo he dicho un montón de veces, la violencia en el cine y las escenas gore producen en mí un estado de excitación.
No es una película perfecta. Me atrevo a decir que New World es muy superior. Aunque como ya es costumbre en este director, hay un pequeño exceso en su duración. Son un poco más de dos horas que dura el film y una que otra escena pudo haberse resumido.
Hay que estar dispuesto a aceptar los elementos propios de este género y de la cultura criminal que se muestra en el film. Para los que no ven mucho cine asiático, algunos hechos, comportamientos y actitudes de los personajes, puede parecerle absurda.
Debemos sacarnos ese chip que nos tiene implantado Hollywood en nuestras mentes y abrirnos a ver películas de otros países, con culturas que son absolutamente diferentes a lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver.
Hace un tiempo le recomendé a alguien que expreso en un post, estar aburrido de las películas americanas, que debería ver cine asiático. Esa persona me dijo que no le gustaba porque era un cine muy exagerado. ¿Qué? Una respuesta absurda. Ese tipo de personas esta tan alienado por Hollywood que ni siquiera es coherente con lo que dice.

I think when he meant over the top, it's that some Asian films are very graphic when it comes to showing violence. The last third of Night in Paradise is a feast of violence. If you are a lover of extreme violence you will enjoy it. If you don't like this kind of movies, I invite you to step out of your comfort zone and try something different from what you always see.
There are scenes so violent that I found it funny. Warning, this may be another Spoiler: Two men shoot each other with high powered automatic weapons. They both shoot each other like 20 times and don't go down until the end. This may be something very unrealistic, because in real life with one shot a human being gets from that gun, it would knock him to the ground in one hit.
It may sound paradoxical, but I think the parts I liked the most were the quiet moments. I found it interesting to see how Tae-gu, that assassin who has lost everything he loved in life, and the unsympathetic young Jae Yeon, a character I disliked at first because of the way she behaved, but who gradually won my sympathy, related to each other.
Jae Yeon's attitude is completely justified, she has a terminal illness, she knows she's going to die soon, she's a character who doesn't care about anything in the world anymore. Until Tae-gu appears in his life.

Creo que cuando se refería a exagerado, es que algunas películas asiáticas son muy gráficas al mostrar la violencia. El último tercio de Noche en el Paraíso es un festín de violencia. Si eres amantes de la extrema violencia vas a disfrutarla. Si no te gusta mucho este tipo del films, te invito a que salgas de zona de confort y pruebes ver algo distinto a lo que siempre ves.
Hay escenas que son tan violentas que me parecieron graciosas. Alerta, esto puede ser otro Spoiler: Dos hombres se destrozan a disparos con armas automáticas de alta potencia. Ambos se disparan entre sí como 20 veces y no se caen hasta el final. Esto puede ser algo muy irreal, porque en la vida real con un solo disparo que un ser humano reciba de esa arma, lo tumbaría de una vez al piso.
Puede sonar paradójico, pero creo que las partes que mas me agradaron, fueron los momentos de tranquilidad. Fue interesante para mi ver como se relacionaba Tae-gu, ese asesino que ha perdido todo lo que amaba en la vida y la joven antipática Jae Yeon, un personaje que me desagradado al principio, por su forma de comportarse, pero que se fue ganando mi simpatía.
La actitud de Jae Yeon está completamente justificada, tiene una enfermedad terminal, sabe que pronto va morir, es un personaje que ya no le importa nada en el mundo. Hasta que Tae-gu aparece en su vida.
Dos seres condenados, uno por órdenes del clan que no descansara hasta capturarlo y la otra por una enfermedad. Dos muertos en vida unidos pro la tragedia que les tiene preparado el destino.
I don't know much about the actors in the film, perhaps some of them I have seen in other productions, but the names are very difficult for me to remember. I apologize for not explaining in detail the background of the cast. You can look them up on IMDB to see that they have an extensive background in film. The performances were excellent from my point of view.
Uhm Tae Goo plays Tae-go, the protagonist of the story. A character who in moments of pain and reflection is expressionless, as if his character knows that there is no possible escape from his fate.
No sé mucho de los actores de la película, quizás alguno lo he visto en otras producciones, pero los nombres son muy difíciles de recordar para mí. Pido disculpas por no explicar con detalle la trayectoria del elenco. Pueden buscarlos cada uno en IMDB para que vean que tienen una extensa trayectoria en el cine. Las actuaciones fueron excelentes desde mi punto de vista.
Uhm Tae Goo interpreta a Tae-go, el protagonista de la historia. Un personaje que en los momentos de dolor y reflexión es poco expresivo, como si su personaje supiera que no hay escape posible de su destino.

La actriz y modelo Jeon Yeo-bin interpreta a Jae Yeon y es ella la que me roba el corazón en el film. Su personaje me cae mal al principio, pero luego se convierte en mi héroe. Ella ha aceptado que no tiene esperanza de vida y quiere acabar con el sufrimiento lo más pronto posible.

Night in Paradise is available in the Netflix catalog and I think it is one of the best films released on the platform. The film was screened at last year's Venice Film Festival, getting positive reviews from film critics who managed to see it at the time. They had planned to release it in theaters, but we all know that the covid problem changed the plans of many production companies and finally the streaming platform acquired the distribution rights of the film. Many think that Netflix's catalog is full of bad productions, but it is not, it really is a movie worth watching.
South Korean gangsters, exaggerated violence, shocking scenes and a good dose of gore, make me place this movie among my favorites of this year. it has flaws? Yes, but I don't care to talk about them, that fade to black ending made it perfect for me.
Noche en el Paraíso está disponible en el catalogo de Netflix y me parece una de las mejores películas estrenadas en la plataforma. El film fue proyectado en Festival de Venecia del año pasado, obteniendo opiniones positivas de los críticos cinematográficos que lograron verla en ese momento. Tenían pensado estrenarla en cines, pero todos sabemos que el problema del covid cambio los planes de muchas productoras y finalmente la plataforma de streaming adquirió los derechos de distribución del film. Muchos piensan que el catalogo de Netflix está lleno de malas producciones, pero este no es el caso, realmente es un film que merece la pena ver.
Gangsters surcoreanos, exagerada violencia, escenas impactantes y una buena dosis de gore, hacen que coloque esta película entre mis favoritas de este año. ¿tiene defectos? Si , pero no me interesa hablar de ellos, ese fundido a negro final la hizo perfecta para mí.
