I am going to continue in the line of science fiction and tell you about a film that was screened at the last Tribeca Film Festival and meets the requirements that interest me: little known film, it is the director's debut, few actors and budget. It is not a film that I can recommend to everyone, only to those more adept at contemplative science fiction of wild and strangely attractive landscapes.
Voy a seguir en la línea de la ciencia ficción y hablarles de una película que se proyectó en el último Festival de Cine de Tribeca y cumple los requisitos que me interesan: película poco conocida, es el debut del director, pocos actores y presupuesto. No es una película que pueda recomendar a todo el mundo, sólo a los más adeptos a la ciencia ficción contemplativa de paisajes agrestes y extrañamente atractivos.

Settlers is the first film by filmmaker Wyatt Rockefeller. From his last name, I think he is related to that famous wealthy family. I'm not sure, but apparently he worked in the Obama administration in an environmental office. Now he seems to be focused on his career as a filmmaker, he has his production company Jericho Motion Pictures and you can follow him on his twitter
According to his IMDB profile he made some short films and writes the script, besides directing this sci-fi story set in an undetermined future, we will only know that everything takes place on Mars.
My first impression is that the director takes advantage of the environment where he made the film and all the available resources to create together with cinematographer Willie Nel, attractive landscapes, which convey that feeling of being wild and dangerous. I don't know the city or the country where the film was shot, but they manage to be convincing in imagining what a colony on the planet Mars would be like.
I was captivated by the positive aspects of the film, it's my weakness for these small productions. Although at the end of the film, I was left with a strange feeling. My big question was why tell this story?
This is not to say that I didn't like the movie, but after watching it, it really doesn't bring anything new to the table. We've seen other stories about human colonies on another planet, there's nothing that makes it different from others. Maybe at the end you'll be left like me, wondering if the story is worth it.
At the time of writing this post, I'm laughing, imagining if any of you who read me and have seen any of the movies I recommend will hurl insults at me and regret having heeded my recommendations, hahaha.

Settlers es la primera película del cineasta Wyatt Rockefeller. Por su apellido, creo que está emparentado con esa famosa familia adinerada. No estoy seguro, pero al parecer trabajó en la administración Obama en una oficina de medio ambiente. Ahora parece estar centrado en su carrera como cineasta, tiene su productora Jericho Motion Pictures.
Según su perfil en IMDB hizo algunos cortometrajes y escribe el guion, ademas de dirigir esta historia de ciencia ficción ambientada en un futuro indeterminado, sólo sabremos que todo transcurre en Marte.
Mi primera impresión es que el director aprovecha el ambiente donde hizo el film y todos los recursos disponibles para crear junto al director de fotografía Willie Nel, paisajes atractivos, que transmiten esa sensación de ser salvajes y peligrosos. No conozco la ciudad ni el país donde se rodó la película, pero consiguen ser convincentes al imaginar cómo sería una colonia en el planeta Marte.
Me cautivaron los aspectos positivos de la película, es mi debilidad por estas pequeñas producciones. Aunque al final de la película, me quedé con una sensación extraña. Mi gran pregunta era ¿por qué contar esta historia?
Esto no quiere decir que la película no me haya gustado, pero después de verla, realmente no aporta nada nuevo. Hemos visto otras historias sobre colonias humanas en otro planeta, no hay nada que la haga diferente a otras. Quizá al final te quedes como yo, preguntándote si la historia merece la pena.
Mientras escribo este post, me estoy riendo, imaginando si alguno de los que me leen y han visto alguna de las películas que recomiendo, me lanzarán insultos y se arrepentirán de haber hecho caso a mis recomendaciones, jajaja
What is the plot of Settlers?
Reza and Lisa are a couple living inside an extensive dome that protects one of the human colonies installed on Mars. We don't know in what year of the future it happens, we only have information that the Earth has suffered a terrible ecological collapse and the few survivors have managed to reach Mars. The couple have a young daughter named Remmy who doesn't know many things, she doesn't even seem to know that she is not on Earth. They have a small farm that provides them with what they need to survive. But they will be threatened by a small group of hostiles, who claim that land as their property. The family will be in danger and both parents will do everything they can to protect their daughter and stay alive. Why do the attackers say this is their home? How did this family come to this place? What are they hiding? Will they manage to stay safe or will they end up being killed by the hostiles? What will Remmy's future be in this desolate colony?
¿Cuál es el argumento de Settlers?
Reza y Lisa son una pareja que vive dentro de una extensa cúpula que protege una de las colonias humanas instaladas en Marte. No sabemos en qué año del futuro ocurre, sólo tenemos información de que la Tierra ha sufrido un terrible colapso ecológico y los pocos supervivientes han conseguido llegar a Marte. La pareja tiene una hija pequeña llamada Remmy que no sabe muchas cosas, ni siquiera parece saber que no está en la Tierra. Tienen una pequeña granja que les proporciona lo necesario para sobrevivir. Pero se verán amenazados por un pequeño grupo de hostiles, que reclaman esa tierra como su propiedad. La familia estará en peligro y ambos padres harán todo lo posible para proteger a su hija y seguir con vida. ¿Por qué los atacantes dicen que este es su hogar? ¿Cómo ha llegado esta familia a este lugar? ¿Qué esconden? ¿Conseguirán mantenerse a salvo o acabarán siendo asesinados por los hostiles? ¿Cuál será el futuro de Remmy en esta colonia desolada?
My opinion
Nothing is more destructive than human nature itself. This is one of the main messages I was able to grasp from the story. It doesn't matter if someday we get to colonize another planet, surely when that happens, we will make the same mistakes as on Earth and end up damaging the ecosystem and killing each other.
The movie is set on the planet Mars where human colonies have been formed, with advanced technology capable of creating a large dome in the different colonies. This is what I assume, because we are never given a clear answer, but apparently there are several colonies that have ended up collapsing.
The family formed by Reza, Lisa and Remmy, lead a normal life, much of the farm does not work, it seems that it was abandoned long ago. But they are lucky to be alive. The girl Remmy is curious, but she must respect the limits set for her by her parents, she can't stray too far from the farm. The rocky landscapes seem to hide a danger for them.
That danger is not creatures, or aliens, or anything like that. The danger comes from other settlers, a group of survivors who have decided to return to the farm after nine years of being unaccounted for. Who are these people?
The confrontation is inevitable, there will be winners and losers. For Lisa, the most important thing is the safety of her nine-year-old daughter. She will do anything to keep her alive. No matter that she has to negotiate and accept the conditions imposed by the character named Jerry, one of the hostiles and who claims to be the son of the former owners of that farm.
Mi opinón
Nada es más destructivo que la propia naturaleza humana. Este es uno de los principales mensajes que pude captar de la historia. No importa que algún día lleguemos a colonizar otro planeta, seguramente cuando eso ocurra, cometeremos los mismos errores que en la Tierra y acabaremos dañando el ecosistema y matándonos entre nosotros.
La película está ambientada en el planeta Marte donde se han formado colonias humanas, con tecnología avanzada capaz de crear una gran cúpula en las diferentes colonias. Esto es lo que supongo, porque nunca nos dan una respuesta clara, pero al parecer hay varias colonias que han acabado colapsando.
La familia formada por Reza, Lisa y Remmy, llevan una vida normal, gran parte de la granja no funciona, parece que fue abandonada hace tiempo. Pero tienen la suerte de estar vivos. La niña Remmy es curiosa, pero debe respetar los límites que le han puesto sus padres, no puede alejarse demasiado de la granja. Los paisajes rocosos parecen esconder un peligro para ellos.
Ese peligro no son las criaturas, ni los extraterrestres, ni nada parecido. El peligro proviene de otros colonos, un grupo de supervivientes que han decidido volver a esa granja tras nueve años en paradero desconocido. ¿Quiénes son esas personas?
El enfrentamiento es inevitable, habrá ganadores y perdedores. Para Lisa, lo más importante es la seguridad de su hija de nueve años. Hará cualquier cosa para mantenerla con vida. No importa que tenga que negociar y aceptar las condiciones impuestas por el personaje llamado Jerry, uno de los hostiles y que dice ser el hijo de los antiguos propietarios de esa granja.
The film establishes a tense relationship between the two conflicting parties, having to live under the same roof, under new rules. Jerry is the darkest character in the film, he will use his power to get what he wants, to satisfy his need for a man.
At this point in the story the pace, which from the beginning is slow, but after certain moments of action and tension, picks up the story again with pause, which may make some viewers feel bored. Yes, where some of us see a slow but interesting progress, others may start to yawn.
The main protagonist of the story is the girl Remmy, who will have to endure all the suffering of confrontation with hostiles, loss of loved ones and living through adolescence with the mysterious Jerry. Remmy is played by two actresses, one as a child and the other as a young teenager.
A forced coexistence, to which she will adapt. Because of all she has lived through and the desire to see what lies beyond the limits, Remmy will be patient and work with one goal in mind. Jerry appears to have good intentions. They have food, animals, water. But Remmy is no longer a child and Jerry needs to satiate her base desires after years of long waiting.
Again, the animal instinct that we humans have, will be the cause of destroying something that apparently works well. That is why we are always doomed to destroy each other. Perfect societies are simply a utopia. If we ever manage to create a colony on another planet, I am sure they will self-destruct. It's in our nature. Are we done with hatred and wars on Earth? No, and they will never end.
Settlers has impeccable artwork, you will like the setting, the photography and the rocky landscapes that simulate Mars. The pace is slow and in the end the story doesn't bring anything new to the sci-fi genre, but for a debut feature and with some good performances, the result is an entertaining film that fans of intimate sci-fi will enjoy.
La película establece una tensa relación entre las dos partes en conflicto, al tener que vivir bajo el mismo techo, bajo nuevas reglas. Jerry es el personaje más oscuro de la película, utilizará su poder para conseguir lo que quiere, para satisfacer su necesidad de hombre.
En este punto de la historia el ritmo, que desde el principio es lento, pero que tras ciertos momentos de acción y tensión, vuelve a retomar la historia con pausa, lo que puede hacer que algunos espectadores se sientan aburridos. Sí, donde algunos vemos un progreso lento pero interesante, otros pueden empezar a bostezar.
La protagonista principal de la historia es la niña Remmy, que tendrá que soportar todo el sufrimiento del enfrentamiento con los hostiles, la pérdida de seres queridos y la convivencia hasta la adolescencia con el misterioso Jerry. Remmy es interpretada por dos actrices, una como niña y otra como joven adolescente.
Una convivencia forzada, a la que se adaptará. Por todo lo que ha vivido y por el deseo de ver que hay mas allá de los limites, Remmy sera paciente y trabajara con un objetivo en mente. Jerry aparenta unas buenas intenciones, . Tienen comida, animales, agua. Pero Remmy ya no es una niña y Jerry necesita saciar sus bajos deseos tras años de larga espera.
De nuevo, el instinto animal que tenemos los humanos, será la causa de destruir algo que aparentemente funciona bien. Por eso siempre estamos condenados a destruirnos unos a otros. Las sociedades perfectas son simplemente una utopía. Si alguna vez conseguimos crear una colonia en otro planeta, estoy seguro de que se autodestruirán. Está en nuestra naturaleza. ¿Hemos acabado con el odio y las guerras en la Tierra? No, y nunca se acabaran.
Settlers tiene un trabajo artístico impecable, te gustará la ambientación, la fotografía y los paisajes rocosos que simulan Marte. El ritmo es lento y al final la historia no aporta nada nuevo al género de la ciencia ficción, pero para ser una ópera prima y con unas buenas interpretaciones, el resultado es una película entretenida que disfrutarán los aficionados a la ciencia ficción intimista.
Characters / Personajes
The cast is made up of a number of actors of various nationalities.
Jonny Lee Miller plays Reza. Remmy's father, willing to fight the hostile group with the weapons he has. The film is divided into chapters, each named after a character. Perhaps his character lacked more presence, but through him we are not introduced to what is happening. The actor was one of those who rose to fame for the movie Trainspotting.
Sofia Boutella plays Lisa. Remmy's mother. She will soon feel the pain of losing the fight and having to submit to Jerry's orders. But first she will do battle, like any mother capable of doing the unimaginable to protect her daughter. Many will recognize her because she was the actress who played The Mummy in the movie starring Tom Cruise. She is a renowned dancer who is now focused on her acting career. I recommend seeing her in Gaspar Noé's Climax and also in Atomic Blonde alongside Charlize Theron.
Actor Ismael Cruz Córdova plays the settler Jerry. The man who will burst into the life of that family, completely changing the routine. An ambiguous character and very well played by this actor whom I have seen in some movies and TV series. His next project is an important role in the series that is being prepared on The Lord of the Rings.
Broohlynn Prince (girl) and Nell Tiger Free (teenager) are the two actresses who play Remmy. The main character and with her the story closes. Both do an excellent job and are currently working in TV series (Home Before Dark and Servant).

Pero antes dará la batalla, como cualquier madre capaz de hacer lo inimaginable para proteger a su hija. Muchos la reconocerán porque fue la actriz que interpretó a La Momia en la película protagonizada por Tom Cruise. Es una reconocida bailarina que ahora está centrada en su carrera de actriz. Recomiendo verla en Climax de Gaspar Noé y también en Atomic Blonde junto a Charlize Theron.

Settlers is not a film with a lot of action, its story focuses more on the relationship of a group of survivors of a colony on Mars and how the positions of power within it are changing. The story spans ten years, starting with 9-year-old Remmy, who must learn to mature quickly. Until she is already a 19-year-old woman and is forced to make a difficult decision.
As I said in the introduction to the post, when I finished watching it I asked myself: what's the point of it all? There are many things that the ending doesn't make clear enough, but I think the viewing is worth it, if you are a big fan of this kind of science fiction.
I hope you see it and like it. If you don't like it, it doesn't matter, you can tell me that because of me you wasted your time watching this.
Settlers no es una película con mucha acción, su historia se centra más en la relación de un grupo de supervivientes de una colonia en Marte y en cómo van cambiando las posiciones de poder dentro de ella. La historia abarca diez años, empezando con Remmy de 9 años, que debe aprender a madurar rápidamente. Hasta que ya es una mujer de 19 años y se ve obligada a tomar una difícil decisión.
Como dije en la introducción del post, cuando terminé de verla me pregunté: ¿Qué sentido tiene todo esto? Hay muchas cosas que el final no aclara lo suficiente, pero creo que el visionado merece la pena, si eres un gran aficionado a este tipo de ciencia ficción.
Espero que la veas y te guste. Si no te gusta, no importa, puedes decirme que por mi culpa has perdido el tiempo viendo esto.
