Dystopian stories in literature and film are fascinating because they can be powerful critiques or satires of today's society. Some of these stories can even be visionary. As an example we have George Orwell's work, written in the 1940s and whose film adaptation was released precisely in 1984.

In recent years, dystopia has become very popular, because novelists and filmmakers found an ingredient to add and obtain monetary success: adventures with youthful romances. An example of this is the success of The Hunger Games novels and movies. There are more dystopian youth sagas that have been adapted to film, some with relative success and others were a resounding failure.
Undergods is not a film aimed at a young audience. Nor is it a film that will appeal to the adult-aged masses.
When I finished watching it, the first thing I asked myself was: How the hell did they manage to make this movie? How did they get financing in these difficult times for the so-called auteur cinema?
A film like this, nowadays, is almost a miracle. Hollywood would never invest money in a proposal like this. It is a film that will directly become a cult film, for the taste of a group of deranged people who will know how to see the beauty and the hopeless message of a future that seems very close.
Reviewing the credits of the film, I realize that it is a production between different European countries. United Kingdom, Estonia, Serbia, Sweden and Belgium. The production companies from these countries were the ones who put up the money to make it, and rightly so! That's why I'm attracted to cinema from Europe, it's a place where authors can still have some creative freedom for their projects.
Science fiction, dystopia, fantasy, horror in an anthology of interconnected stories, where reality and imagination mix to offer us a disturbing image of a society of the future, but if we look closely, it seems that we are already living that crazy future.

Durante los últimos años la distopía se ha hecho muy populares, porque novelistas y cineastas encontraron un ingrediente que agregarle y obtener éxito monetario: aventuras con romances juveniles. Ejemplo de ellos es el éxito de las novelas y películas Los Juegos del Hambre. Hay más sagas distopicas juveniles que han sido adaptadas al cine, algunas con relativo éxito y otras fueron un rotundo fracaso.
Undergods no es una película dirigida al público juvenil. Ni es una película que pueda gustar a las masas de edad adulta.
Cuando termine de verla, lo primero que me pregunte fue ¿Cómo demonios consiguieron hacer esta película? ¿Cómo lograron financiamiento en esta época tan difícil para el llamado cine de Autor?
Una película como esta, en la actualidad, es casi un milagro. Hollywood nunca invertiría dinero en una propuesta. Es un film que directamente pasara a ser de culto, del gusto de un grupo de desquiciados que podrán ver la belleza y el demoledor mensaje de un futuro muy cercano.
Al revisar los créditos del film, me doy cuenta que es una producción entre diferentes países europeos. Reino Unido, Estonia, Serbia, Suecia y Belgica. Empresas productoras de estos países fueron los que pusieron el dinero para hacerla. ¡Con razón! Por eso me atrae el cine de Europa, es un lugar donde todavía autores pueden tener algo de libertad creativa para sus proyectos.
Ciencia ficción, distopía, fantasía, horror en una antología de historias conectadas, donde la realidad y la imaginación se mezclan para ofrecernos una perturbadora imagen de una sociedad del futuro, pero que si nos fijamos bien, parece que ya estamos viviendo ese descabellado futuro.
What is the plot of Undergods?
K and Z are two unpleasant drivers of a rickety old van. Both are scavengers in a post-industrial Europe in total ruin. They pick up corpses from the streets and, if they get hold of strong people, take them prisoner and trade them for food in a kind of black slave market. These characters act as the main narrators of the stories that make up this dystopian anthology. We do not know if the stories belong to the past of that destroyed Europe or if they are just inventions of these characters. There are three main stories and two that serve as connections throughout the disturbing film. The story of the married couple Ron and Ruth. The story of the ambitious businessman Hans and, finally, the story of the marriage of Dominic and Rachel. Reality? Fantasy? Present? Future?
¿Cuál es el argumento de Undergods?
K y Z son dos desagradables conductores de una furgoneta destartalada y antigua. Ambos son una especie de carroñeros en una Europa post industrial totalmente en ruinas. Se dedican a recoger cuerpos de las calles y si consiguen a personas fuertes, las hacen prisioneros para cambiarlos por comida en un mercado negro de esclavos. Estos personajes actúan como los principales narradores de las historias que conforman esta antología distópica. No sabemos si las historias pertenecen al pasado de esa Europa destruida o si solo son inventos de estos personajes. Hay tres historias principales y dos sub tramas que sirven de conexión en toda la perturbadora película. La del matrimonio conformado por Ron y Ruth. La historia del ambicioso hombre de negocios Hans y por último la del matrimonio de Dominic y Rachel. ¿Realidad? ¿Fantasía? ¿Presente? ¿Futuro?
My opinion
The visual aspect is very strong within the story. The careful setting, costumes and photography exert their power of attraction on viewers like me, fascinated by seeing a Europe that seems to have self-destructed.
What we see are the remains of a continent turned into a corpse. Where only the worst of society remains, feeding on death.
The two characters who pick up corpses are the reflection of human rottenness. Two disgusting beings, who take advantage of the weak to survive in an amoral world with no signs of order, only the law of the strongest.
K and Z are disgusting, but at the same time I could not take my eyes off them, observing their behavior, their gestures, detailing every part of their ugliness. Are they our reflection? Are they such horrible beings that they represent our darkest side? Is that what we will become?
Each story is different, but they have a common theme: family and its breakdown.
In two of the stories, there are married couples trapped in monotony. Fed up with themselves, an element will emerge that will be the catalyst for the destruction of the main core of any society.
Both stories are the most realistic, they are also the easiest to feel identified with one of them, because they are like a mirror where some viewers can see themselves reflected.
Mi Opinión
El componente visual es muy fuerte dentro de la historia. La cuidada ambientación, el vestuario y la fotografía ejercen su poder de atracción en espectadores como yo, fascinados por ver una Europa que parece haberse autodestruido.
Lo que vemos son los restos de un continente convertido en cadáver. Donde sólo queda lo peor de la sociedad, alimentándose de la muerte.
Los dos personajes que recogen cadáveres son el reflejo de la podredumbre humana. Dos seres repugnantes, que se aprovechan de los débiles para sobrevivir en un mundo amoral sin signos de orden, sólo la ley del más fuerte.
K y Z son repugnantes, pero al mismo tiempo no podía apartar los ojos de ellos, observando su comportamiento, sus gestos, detallando cada parte de su fealdad. ¿Es acaso nuestro reflejo? ¿Son seres tan horribles que representan nuestro lado más oscuro? ¿Es eso en lo que nos convertiremos?
Cada historia es diferente, pero tienen un tema común: la familia y su descomposición.
En dos de los relatos, hay matrimonios atrapados en la monotonía. Hartos de sí mismos, surgirá un elemento que será el catalizador de la destrucción del núcleo principal de cualquier sociedad.
Ambas historias son las más realistas, también son las más fáciles de sentirse identificado con una de ellas, porque son como un espejo donde algunos espectadores pueden verse reflejados.
How many do not live in a family prison like Dominic? With a wife who doesn't really love him and working like a bastard, sacrificing himself in a company to then receive a pat on the back and maybe a possible promotion within an industrial system where we are disposable machines, that no matter how hard we try and receive praise, when we are no longer good for the task at hand, we will be thrown into society's landfill.
The unhappiness of Ron and Ruth, who put up with each other, until a stranger shows up at their door. The only thing that will happen after that is the natural rot after years of standing still, without the courage to make the right decisions at the right time, doomed to a miserable existence.
What to say about the ambitious businessman Hans? A man whose mind seems to be stuck in his glorious past and who now lives in a society that is enduring the last days of a world that is dying out. He represents the ruthless human, who all his life has taken advantage of others for his financial gain. He is another scavenger, only with a superior lifestyle to K and Z.
It is a work that fascinated me. Seeing beauty in the midst of destruction and the most horrible acts of human beings is something that fills me with ecstasy.
I have seen how the society I live in has been destroyed and we are getting worse and worse. Although the world shown in the film is Europe, it is something we can also suffer in other countries.
The images help to sustain so much moral rottenness. The criticism of our way of life is subtly addressed in each story, with the terrible consequences that some doomed characters will have to face.
Any similarity with our current situation is not a coincidence, the author is aware of what he wants to show us. The wound he wants to squeeze us, the pain he wants to inflict on us.
We don't like to see our ugliness, the worst of us, our cowardice and defects, our rotten side. That's why I think it's a film that very few will enjoy, because it's not made to entertain, it's made to shake our comfort.
Strange, enigmatic, fascinating and disturbing. If you like this kind of movies, you will be delighted with a difficult work to make in these times where the mainstrean is what rules in streaming catalogs.
¿Cuántos no viven en una prisión familiar como Dominic? Con una mujer que no le quiere realmente y trabajando como un cabrón, sacrificándose en una empresa para luego recibir una palmadita en la espalda y quizás un posible ascenso dentro de un sistema industrial en el que somos máquinas desechables, que por mucho que nos esforcemos y recibamos elogios, cuando ya no sirvamos para la tarea que tenemos entre manos, seremos arrojados al vertedero de la sociedad.
La infelicidad de Ron y Ruth, que se aguantan mutuamente, hasta que un desconocido se presenta en su puerta. Lo único que ocurrirá después es la podredumbre natural tras años de estar parados, sin el valor de tomar las decisiones correctas en el momento adecuado, condenados a una existencia miserable.
¿Qué decir del ambicioso empresario Hans? Un hombre cuya mente parece estar atascada en su glorioso pasado y que ahora vive en una sociedad que está soportando los últimos días de un mundo que se está extinguiendo. Representa al humano despiadado, que toda su vida se ha aprovechado de los demás para su beneficio económico. Es otro carroñero, sólo que con un estilo de vida superior al de K y Z.
Es una obra que me fascinó. Ver la belleza en medio de la destrucción y los actos más horribles del ser humano es algo que me llena de éxtasis.
He visto cómo la sociedad en la que vivo ha sido destruida y cada vez estamos peor. Aunque el mundo que se muestra en la película es Europa, es algo que también podemos sufrir en otros lugares.
Las imágenes ayudan a sostener tanta podredumbre moral. La crítica a nuestro modo de vida se aborda sutilmente en cada historia, con las terribles consecuencias que tendrán que afrontar algunos personajes condenados.
Cualquier similitud con nuestra situación actual no es una coincidencia, el autor es consciente de lo que quiere mostrarnos. La herida que quiere apretarnos, el dolor que quiere infligirnos.
No nos gusta ver nuestra fealdad, lo peor de nosotros, nuestra cobardía y defectos, nuestro lado podrido. Por eso creo que es una película que muy pocos disfrutarán, porque no está hecha para entretener, está hecha para sacudir nuestra comodidad.
Extraña, enigmática, fascinante e inquietante. Si te gustan este tipo de películas, te deleitarás con una obra difícil de hacer en estos tiempos donde lo mainstrean es lo que manda en los catálogos de streaming.
Who is the director?
The film is directed by a young Spanish filmmaker named Chino Moya. I didn't know anything about this director. His IMDB profile says he previously wrote and directed a documentary about the Spanish musical group La Oreja de Van Gogh.

Undergods is his debut feature in fiction stories, directing and writing the screenplay. It's an excellent debut, the filmmaker's ideas are interesting and I'm looking forward to his next project. The photography is by David Raedeker who has done other fabulous work in the films: Wainting for You, My Brother the Devil and The Souvenir. In Underdogs he does an amazing job, delighting us with the vision of an apocalyptic world.

There is no main protagonist, they are choral stories with several familiar faces from British film and television. In addition, actors from other countries are involved in the production. Johann Myers and Géza Röhrig play K and Z, the nasty corpse collectors. Michael Gould and Hayley Carmichael play Ron and Ruth, the dull married couple whose routine is disrupted by the presence of Harry, played by the excellent actor Ned Dannehy. Eric Gordon plays the wealthy businessman Hans and Tanya Reynolds plays Maria, Hans' daughter. Jan Bijvoet plays The Stranger, the strange man who appears in Hans' life with a business proposition. It's hard to recommend the film, because I know most of you who read me on Hive won't like it. But if you ever decide to see a movie different from the repetitive offerings on streaming platforms and in Hollywood, this is an ideal film. Don't be afraid to see the worst version of the human being. Every day we must deal with this decaying world. Undergods will shock you visually and also make you react and see the path we are taking as a society.

Es difícil recomendar la película, porque sé que a la mayoría de los que me leen en Hive no les va a gustar. Pero si alguna vez decides ver una película diferente a las repetitivas propuestas que hay en las plataformas de streaming y en Hollywood, esta es una película ideal. No tengas miedo de ver la peor versión del ser humano. Cada día debemos lidiar con este mundo en decadencia. Undergods te impactará visualmente y también te hará reaccionar y ver el camino que estamos tomando como sociedad.
