A mother's love is unconditional, and a terrible loss can change everything. A disorder can appear and can shatter our illusions as parents. The film I am about to present to you is a dramatic psychological horror inspired by one of those disorders, one of the most terrifying in itself. I hope you will explore with me this review of this movie, although I recommend that if you don't like spoilers it is better not to continue.

El amor de madre es incondicional, y una terrible perdida puede cambiarlo todo. Un trastorno puede aparecer y hacer que nuestras ilusiones como padres puedan quebrantarse. La película que vengo a presentarles es un dramático terror psicológico inspirado en uno de esos trastornos, uno de los más aterradores de por sí. Espero que explores conmigo esta reseña sobre esta película, aunque recomiendo que si no les gustan los spoilers es mejor no continuar.
Drama, suspense and a lot of tension, coupled with something as beautiful as a mother's love. 'Run' is a film directed by Aneesh Chaganty and produced by Sev Ohanian and Natalie Qasabian. The feature film was to be released on May 8, 2020, but due to the pandemic because of COVID-19, its release was delayed months later, but in August 2020, the streaming service Hulu, acquired the distribution rights, releasing its premiere on November 20, 2020. Then in April 2021 it was added to the catalog of the streaming service Netflix.
The synopsis is seemingly simple, as it tells us the story of Diane (Sarah Paulson), a woman who gives birth prematurely to her daughter Chloe and, because of this, is immediately transferred to the emergency room. After showing us a brief epilogue, the film shows us on screen the illnesses that Chloe has suffered from since she was a child, such as asthma, cardiac arrhythmia, hemochromatosis, diabetes and paralysis.
Drama, suspenso y mucha tensión, acoplado con algo tan bonito como el amor de madre. ’Corre’, es una película dirigida por Aneesh Chaganty y producida por Sev Ohanian y Natalie Qasabian. El largometraje iba a ser lanzado el 8 de Mayo del 2020, pero debido a la pandemia a causa del COVID-19, su estreno se retrasó meses después, pero en agosto del 2020, el servicio de streaming Hulu, adquirió los derechos de distribución, lanzando su estreno el 20 de noviembre del 2020. Luego en abril del 2021 fue añadido en el catálogo del servicio de streaming Netflix.
La sinopsis es aparentemente simple, pues nos cuenta la historia de Diane (Sarah Paulson), una mujer que da a luz prematuramente a su hija Chloe y, debido a esto, es trasladada inmediatamente a emergencias. Después de mostrarnos un breve epílogo, la película nos muestra en pantalla enfermedades que padece Chloe desde pequeña, como asma, arritmia cardíaca, hemocromatosis, diabetes y parálisis.

Seventeen years later, we see Chloe (Kiera Allen), a wheelchair-bound teenager, who is very smart and because of her ailments has been homeschooled with a passion for science and engineering. Her mother, a single woman, devotes her entire life to caring for her daughter. One day, Chloe discovers in a grocery bag brought by Diane a bottle of green pills with her mother's name on it, from that moment on, the film takes us into a strange atmosphere of tension.
That same day at night, while Diane was giving her usual medicines to Chloe, the young girl discovers that next to the pills was one of those green pills for her, confused, Chloe asks her mother about this pill, thinking that they were not for her since on the bottle was her mother's name, but Diane claims that her name was on the bottle because it came on the receipt. Still in doubt, Chloe goes to sleep but wanting to investigate further, so she gets out of bed and tries to search the internet for the name of the pill which is "Trigoxin", but realizes it has no connection which she finds very strange.
The next day, Chloe, in her eagerness to investigate, uses her home phone to call the pharmacy where her mother buys these pills, but fails twice, then dials a random number who answers a stranger to beg her to research the name of the pill online, using her wit, Chloe convinces the stranger to do her that favor and reveals the true effect of Trigoxin, but with something more disturbing, it turns out that Trigoxin is red which makes you wonder: what the hell is she taking?
17 años después, vemos a Chloe (Kiera Allen), como una adolescente que está en silla de ruedas, la cual es muy lista y debido a sus padecimientos ha sido educada en casa con una pasión por las ciencias y a la ingeniería. Su madre, una mujer soltera, dedica toda su vida a los cuidados de su hija. Un día, Chloe, descubre en una bolsa de supermercado traída por Diane un frasco de pastillas verdes con el nombre de su madre, a partir de este momento, la película nos adentra en una extraña atmósfera de tensión.
Ese mismo día en la noche, mientras Diane le daba sus medicamentos habituales a Chloe, la joven descubre que junto a las pastillas estaba una de esas píldoras de color verde para ella, confundida, Chloe pregunta a su madre sobre esta píldora, pensando que no eran para ella ya que en el frasco estaba el nombre de su madre, pero Diane alega que su nombre estaba en el frasco porque vino en el recibo. Aún con dudas, Chloe se acuesta a dormir pero con ganas de seguir investigando, así que se levanta de su cama e intentan buscar por internet el nombre de la pastilla el cual es “Trigoxina”, pero se da cuenta que no tiene conexión lo cual le parece muy extraño.
Al día siguiente, Chloe, en su afán de investigar, utiliza el teléfono de su casa para llamar a la farmacia donde su madre adquiere estas pastillas, pero fracasa en dos ocasiones, luego marca a un número aleatorio quien le responde un desconocido para suplicarle que investigue por internet el nombre de la pastilla, usando su ingenio, Chloe convence al extraño de hacerle ese favor y le revela el verdadero efecto de la Trigoxina, pero con algo más perturbador, resulta que la Trigoxina es de color rojo lo que hace preguntarse: ¿qué rayos está tomando?

We gradually follow the trail with the protagonist, where we follow her to unravel the mystery. Chloe manages to convince her mother to watch a movie downtown and takes the opportunity to secretly escape to the pharmacy with the excuse that she has to go to the bathroom. When she arrives, she manages to convince the pharmacist to reveal the mystery of that green pill, realizing that she has actually been ingesting a drug for dogs that in humans can cause numbness in the legs.
At that moment, Diane enters the pharmacy and lulls Chloe to sleep by injecting her with a tranquilizer. Upon waking up, Chloe finds herself locked in her room so she escapes through the window, once again using her wits and crawls across the ceiling to her mother's room, then has an asthma attack and suddenly crawls back to her room down the hallway to find her inhaler. In this part we see how Chloe tries to go down the stairs with her mechanical chair, but she realizes that the cables have been disconnected, in a fit of desperation she throws herself down the stairs hitting herself hard, but her impetus to escape filled her with strength to get up so she climbed into her wheelchair fleeing from her house.
Wandering down the street she meets a postal delivery man who almost runs her over, to whom she confesses what her mother had done to her. At that moment, Diane arrives in her car, as the postal delivery man did not want to give her the right of way to take her daughter home, she decides to neutralize him by injecting a tranquilizer in his neck, at that moment the scene ends and we find ourselves back in Diane's house, with Chloe locked in the basement and the body of the postal delivery man dragged by Diane leaving a trail of blood.
Paulatinamente seguimos la pista junto a la protagonista, donde la seguimos para desentrañar el misterio. Chloe logra convencer a su madre de ver una película en el centro y aprovecha para fugarse en secreto a la farmacia con la excusa de que debe ir al baño. Al llegar, logra convencer a la farmacéutica de revelarle el misterio de aquella píldora verde, dándose cuenta que en realidad ha estado ingiriendo un medicamento para perros que en humanos puede causar adormecimiento en las piernas.
En ese instante, Diane entra a la farmacia y adormece a Chloe inyectándole un tranquilizante. Al despertar, Chloe se encuentra en su habitación encerrada por lo que escapa por la ventana, una vez más usa su ingenio y se arrastra por el techo hasta la habitación de su madre, luego le da un ataque de asma y súbitamente se arrastra hasta su habitación por el pasillo hasta encontrar su inhalador. En esta parte vemos como Chloe intentar bajar las escaleras con su silla mecánica, pero se da cuenta que los cables han sido desconectados, en un arranque de desesperación se lanza por las escaleras dándose fuertes golpes, pero su ímpetu por escapar la llenó de fuerzas para levantarse por lo que subió a su silla de ruedas huyendo de su casa.
Deambulando por la calle se encuentra con un repartidor de correos que casi la atropella, a este le confiesa lo que su madre le había hecho. En ese momento, va llegando Diane en su auto, como el repartidor de correos no ha querido otorgarle el paso para llevar a su hija a casa, decide neutralizarlo inyectándole un tranquilizante en el cuello, en ese instante la escena termina y nos encontramos de nuevo en la casa de Diane, con Chloe encerrada en el sótano y el cuerpo del repartidor de correos arrastrado por Diane dejando un rastro de sangre.

Locked in the basement, Chloe discovers a number of revealing things, she finds her acceptance to University of Washington thrown in the trash, a death certificate of the real Chloe who died 2 hours after her birth, a newspaper article of a baby stolen from a hospital and a photo of Chloe when she was younger making use of her legs. At that moment a Flashback occurs, where we see Diane suffering for the death of the original Chloe, then we see in another scene Diane observing a little baby in the incubation room which makes us understand that she stole her, raised her and was getting sick to stay with her forever.
Upon realizing the whole truth, Chloe confronts Diane, hiding in a cabinet full of medicines for her, takes a bottle with toxic liquid content and ingests it confronting her mother saying, "You need me!", subsequently falling unconscious.
After that, Chloe wakes up in the hospital with her body immobile and intubated, with her mother waiting for her outside in the room, but she causes an emergency in the hospital which causes the nurse accompanying Chloe to leave, leaving her alone. At that moment, Diane arrives and disconnects her daughter, taking her away in a wheelchair. Desperate to ask for help, Chloe cannot even speak so she tries to recover the mobility of her body by using one of her legs to stop Diane, which she does and at that moment the hospital security team arrives and stops Diane with a bullet in her shoulder, making her fall down the stairs of the entrance.
Encerrada en el sótano, Chloe descubre una serie de cosas reveladoras, encuentra su aceptación para ingresar a la Universidad de Washington tirada a la basura, un certificado de defunción de la verdadera Chloe la cual murió 2 horas después de su nacimiento, un artículo en el periódico de un bebé robado en un hospital y una foto de Chloe cuando era más pequeña haciendo uso de sus piernas. En ese momento ocurre un Flashback, donde vemos a Diane sufriendo por la muerte de la Chloe original, luego vemos en otra escena a Diane observando a una pequeña bebé en la sala de incubación lo cual nos hace entender que la robó, crió y estuvo enfermando para quedarse siempre con ella.
Al darse cuenta de toda la verdad, Chloe enfrenta a Diane, ocultándose en un armario lleno de medicamentos para ella, toma un frasco con contenido liquido tóxico y lo ingiere enfrentando a su madre diciendo: “¡Tú me necesitas!”, cayendo subsiguientemente inconsciente.
Luego de eso, Chloe despierta en el hospital con el cuerpo inamovible e intubada, con su madre esperándola afuera en la habitación, pero esta provoca una emergencia en el hospital lo que hace que la enfermera que acompaña a Chloe se marche dejándola sola. En ese momento, llega Diane y desconecta a su hija llevándosela en silla de ruedas. Desesperada por pedir ayuda, Chloe no puede ni hablar por lo que intenta recuperar la movilidad de su cuerpo haciendo uso de una de sus piernas para detener a Diane, lo cual lo logra y en ese momento llega el equipo de seguridad del hospital deteniendo a Diane con una bala en su hombro, haciéndola caer por las escaleras de la entrada.

7 years after what happened, we see a more adult Chloe visiting a penitentiary center, there we can see how she has gradually regained control over her legs, passing through a lie detector just leaning on a cane. We then see Chloe conversing with a dying Diane, to whom she tells about her current life, her current marriage, her children, she had even reunited with her real parents. We then see Chloe pull a wrapper with three green pills out of her mouth, she tells Diane that she loves her very much and to open her mouth wide.
7 años después de lo ocurrido, vemos a Chloe más adulta visitando un centro penitenciario, allí podemos observar como poco a poco ha recuperado el control sobre sus piernas, pasando por un detector de mentiras solo apoyándose en un bastón. Después veremos a Chloe conversando con una Diane moribunda, a quien le cuenta sobre su actual vida, su actual matrimonio, sus hijos, incluso se había reencontrado con sus verdaderos padres. Luego vemos que Chloe saca de su boca una envoltura con tres píldoras verdes, le dice a Diane que la quiere mucho y que abra bien la boca.

The plot of the film may not be something new that we have seen, in fact, it is very similar to 'Misery' (1990), the horror film based on the homonymous novel by Stephen King, which talks about a woman who keeps her favorite writer in captivity, severely hurting him by breaking his legs and wounding him progressively until he finishes writing the last part of his favorite novel. I thought the director had taken this reference as inspiration to create 'Run', but it turns out that his inspiration came from elsewhere.
The inspiration actually came from a psychological disorder called "Münchhausen Syndrome", which manifests itself mostly in adults who have people, usually minors, in their care, causing them injuries, illnesses and psychologically inducing them that something is wrong with them physically speaking. Usually people who suffer from this disorder have the need to afflict themselves, something that we can appreciate in a scene where Diane is taking a bath and you can see her back full of scars. People with Münchhausen Syndrome, according to the diagnoses, have this characteristic due to the torture they cause to their victims.
I found this particularity of the film interesting, despite having a worn plot, predictable and that at times leaves much to be desired, I really liked the performance of Sarah Paulson giving her character that disturbing combination of sweetness and evil, and of course that of Kiera Allen, which we could follow throughout the story creating tension and anxiety.
La trama de la película puede que no sea algo nuevo que hayamos visto, de hecho, es muy similar a la de ’Misery’ (1990), el filme de terror basado en la novela homónima de Stephen King, el cual habla de una mujer que mantiene en cautiverio a su escritor favorito, lastimándolo severamente rompiéndole las piernas e hiriéndolo progresivamente hasta que termine de escribir la última parte de su novela preferida. Pensé que el director había tomado esta referencia como inspiración para crear ‘Corre’, pero resulta que su inspiración vino de otra parte.
La inspiración en realidad provino de un trastorno psicológico llamado “Síndrome de Münchhausen”, el cual se manifiesta más que todo en personas adultas que tienen personas, usualmente menores, a su cuidado, provocándoles lesiones, enfermedades e induciéndoles psicológicamente que algo anda mal en ellos físicamente hablando. Usualmente las personas que padecen este trastorno tienen la necesidad de autoafligirse, algo que podemos apreciar en una escena donde Diane se está bañando y se puede notar su espalda llena de cicatrices. Las personas con el Síndrome de Münchhausen, según los diagnósticos, tienen esta característica debido a la tortura que le provocan a sus víctimas.
Esta particularidad me pareció interesante de la película, a pesar de tener una trama desgastada, predecible y que en momentos deja mucho que desear, me gustó mucho la interpretación de Sarah Paulson confiriéndole a su personaje esa combinación perturbadora de dulzura y maldad, y por supuesto el de Kiera Allen, la cual pudimos seguir durante toda la historia creándonos tensión y ansiedad.

Director Aneesh Chaganty is not the first time making a psychological horror feature film about the relationship of parents and children, prior to this one, he shot the film 'Searching' (2018), which is about a father desperately using his missing daughter's computer to find her. Both films received good critical acclaim, despite their low budget and limited cast of actors.
'Run', while not what I expected, has an interesting inspiration on which it is based. It's one of those horror movies to pass the weekend or have a good evening with friends. Some people are annoyed by the predictable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, everyone should judge with their critical eye. I recommend it to watch and I give it a rating of 7/10, for the acting cast that has done a great job more than anything else.
El director Aneesh Chaganty no es la primera vez que realiza un largometraje de terror psicológico sobre la relación de padres e hijos, anterior a esta, filmó la película ’Searching’ (2018), que trata sobre un padre que utiliza desesperadamente la computadora de su hija desaparecida para encontrarla. Ambos filmes recibieron buena aceptación por parte de la crítica, a pesar de su poco presupuesto y un reparto de actores limitado.
‘Corre’, a pesar de que no era lo que esperaba, tiene una interesante inspiración en la que se basa. Es de esas películas de terror para pasar el fin de semana o tener una buena tarde con los amigos. Hay personas que les molesta lo predecible, pero eso no necesariamente es malo, cada quien debe juzgar con su ojo crítico. La recomiendo para ver y le doy una calificación de 7/10, por el reparto actoral que ha hecho un gran trabajo más que todo.
