Lately I'm becoming intrigued by the low-budget films I find on Netflix categorized as independent cinema. There are so many stories that can be told concisely without so much beating around the bush. There are movies that tire with filler details and don't get to the point, aside from the fact that there are no additions that make the movie more interesting, there isn't a strong enough cooking for so much daring. On this occasion I want to present a film that just by seeing the cover and part of the synopsis caught my attention, so I decided to take a look at it.

Últimamente me estoy empezando a intrigar por las películas de bajo presupuesto que encuentro en Netflix categorizadas como cine independiente. Existen muchas historias que se pueden contar de manera concisa sin tantos rodeos. Hay películas que cansan con los detalles de relleno y no van al grano, aparte de que no hay agregados que hagan más interesante la película, no hay una cocción tan fuerte como para tanta osadía. En esta ocasión quiero presentar una película que con solo ver la portada y parte de la sinopsis me llamó la atención, así que decidí echarle un vistazo.
'Beach Rats' is an American film released in 2017, written and directed by Eliza Hittman and produced by Cinereach for distributor Neon. It stars Harris Dickinson, Kate Hodge, Erik Potempa and Madeline Weinstein. It was made with a budget of $473,771 grossing only $486,623, a rather interesting amount for this type of film. It won awards and a 2017 nomination for Best Director - Drama at the Sundance Film Festival, Best Actor (Dickinson) and Cinematography at the Independent Spirit Awards and Nominated for Best New Actor (Harris Dickinson) at the Gotham Awards.
The plot of the story is simple and tells the life of a 19-year-old boy named Frankie (Harris Dickinson) who lives in the New York City neighborhood of Brooklyn, with his father Joe (Neal Huff) convalescing from terminal cancer, his mother Donna (Kate Hodge) and his sister Carla (Nicole Flyus). Frankie is a boy who does nothing but hang out with his friends Nick (Frank Hakaj), Alexei (David Ivanov) and Jesse (Anton Selyaninov), who only care about wasting time buying drugs like marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy pills and to do so, they steal money from unsuspecting people's wallets.
The film focuses on the life of Frankie, who has a duality in his personality, he is a young and handsome guy with a sculpted body with personality problems and dissatisfaction with his physique. At the beginning of the film, we notice aspects of Frankie's true sexuality, who spends his time frequenting an online gay dating site to meet older men. The film portrays a young man with a double life, having in one of them his "heteronormative" image for society as a young masculine man and in the other as a vulnerable boy who seeks out mature men to have sex with on the sly.
’Beach Rats’ es una película estadounidense estrenada en el año 2017, escrita y dirigida por Eliza Hittman y producida por Cinereach para la distribuidora Neon. Está protagonizada por Harris Dickinson, Kate Hodge, Erik Potempa y Madeline Weinstein. Fue realizada con un presupuesto de 473.771 dólares recaudando solo 486.623, una cantidad bastante interesante para este tipo de películas. Obtuvo premios y una nominación en 2017 como Mejor director – Drama en el festival de Sundance, Mejor actor (Dickinson) y fotografía en los Premios Independent Spirit y Nominada a Mejor nuevo actor (Harris Dickinson) en los Premios Gotham.
La trama de la historia es simple y cuenta la vida de un chico de 19 años llamado Frankie (Harris Dickinson) que vive en el barrio neoyorquino de Brooklyn, con su padre Joe (Neal Huff) convaleciente de un cáncer terminal, su madre Donna (Kate Hodge) y su hermana Carla (Nicole Flyus). Frankie es un chico que lo único que hace es estar con sus amigos Nick (Frank Hakaj), Alexei (David Ivanov) y Jesse (Anton Selyaninov), los cuales solo se preocupan en perder el tiempo comprando drogas como marihuana, cocaína y pastillas de éxtasis y para hacerlo, roban dinero de billeteras de personas desprevenidas.
La película se enfoca en la vida de Frankie, quien posee una dualidad en su personalidad, es un chico joven y guapo con un cuerpo escultural con problemas de personalidad e inconformidad por su físico. Al principio de la película, notamos aspectos de la verdadera sexualidad de Frankie, quien se la pasa frecuentando un sitio de citas gay por internet para conocer hombres mayores. El largometraje retrata a un joven con una doble vida teniendo en una de ellas su imagen “heteronormativa” para la sociedad de un joven masculino y en la otra la de un chico vulnerable que busca hombres maduros para tener sexo con ellos a escondidas.
One day, Frankie meets a girl named Simone (Madeline Weinstein) with whom he tries to start a relationship, but the boy's true sexual tastes coupled with his other hidden life prevent him from having a relationship with the girl, so their courtship fails and Frankie and Simone end up separated. Throughout the film, we realize that not only the discovery of the true repressed sexuality wreaks havoc on the protagonist, but also the environment in which he is involved. There we can find aspects such as the death of his father, the pressure of his mother because he gets a girlfriend and the courtship of his younger sister, without his father, Frankie feels he must protect his family by preventing his own affairs to intervene.
The film touches on such common themes in today's society as the discovery of sexuality at an early age, family problems and the care of one's image in the eyes of the community. Within these aspects, we see how the protagonist manages with care and fear, hoping not to screw up, until in the end, he realizes his mistakes and pretends to restart again.
This is not another film like Call me by your name (2017) by Luca Guadagnino, since unlike the Italian director and his romantic vision of the discovery of true sexuality, Eliza Hittman's vision is much more raw and dark, placing us languid scenes with short and precise dialogues, perfect and without many details which grant us understanding about the plot without the need of flashbacks. With the help of Hélène Louvart, the cinematographer of the film, the director was able to portray those raw and blurred environments as is her style, something that we can corroborate in her previous feature film It Felt Like Love (2013), a film that also has sexuality as a main theme, it seems that the director is intrigued by this type of subject matter exposing it in a hard way.
Un día, Frankie conoce a una chica llamada Simone (Madeline Weinstein) con la que intenta iniciar una relación, pero los verdaderos gustos sexuales del chico aunado a su otra vida oculta impiden que tenga una relación con la chica, por lo que su noviazgo fracasa y Frankie y Simone terminan separados. A lo largo del filme, nos damos cuenta que no solo el descubrimiento de la verdadera sexualidad reprimida hace estragos en el protagonista, sino el entorno en el que se encuentra desenvuelto. Allí podemos encontrar aspectos como la muerte de su padre, la presión de su madre porque consiga una novia y el noviazgo de su hermana menor, sin su padre, Frankie siente que debe proteger a su familia evitando que sus propios asuntos intervengan.
La película toca semblantes bastante comunes en la sociedad actual, como el descubrimiento de la sexualidad a temprana edad, los problemas familiares y el cuidado de la imagen ante la colectividad. Dentro de estos aspectos, vemos como el protagonista se desenvuelve con cuidado y miedo, esperando no meter la pata, hasta que al final, se da cuenta de sus errores y pretende reiniciar de nuevo.
Esta no es otra película como Call me by your name (2017) de Luca Guadagnino, puesto que a diferencia del director italiano y su visión romántica del descubrimiento de la verdadera sexualidad, la visión de Eliza Hittman es mucho más cruda y oscura, colocándonos escenas lánguidas con diálogos cortos y precisos, perfectos y sin muchos detalles los cuales nos otorgan entendimiento sobre la trama sin necesidad de flashbacks. Con la ayuda de Hélène Louvart, la encargada de fotografía de la película, la directora pudo retratarnos esos ambientes tan crudos y difuminados tal y como es su estilo, cosa que podemos corroborar en su anterior largometraje It Felt Like Love (2013), un filme que también tiene a la sexualidad como tema principal, al parecer a la directora le intriga este tipo de temáticas exponiéndola de una manera dura.
For many it can be a boring and slow film with an interesting story, it doesn't have a musical setting or extensively elaborated dialogues that make us think, since it is of that kind of "indie" style films that focuses directly on the plot. I thought at first that I was not going to like it, but then I started to feel identified with the main character with whom I could have a connection, the only one in fact. The movie is on Netflix streaming service, and because of its low popularity, maybe it will be removed from their catalog, so if this feature film has intrigued you I recommend watching it immediately. I give it a rating of 7/10 leaving me intrigued by its excellent accuracy.
Para muchos puede ser un filme aburrido y lento con una historia interesante, no tiene una ambientación musical o diálogos extensamente elaborados que nos hagan pensar, puesto que es de ese tipo de películas de estilo “indie” que se enfoca directamente a la trama. Pensaba al principio que no me iba a gustar, pero luego empecé a sentirme identificado con el protagonista con quien pude tener una conexión, el único de hecho. La película se encuentra en el servicio de streaming de Netflix, y por su baja popularidad, quizás sea eliminada de su catálogo, así que si este largometraje te ha intrigado te recomiendo verlo inmediatamente. Le doy una calificación de 7/10 dejándome intrigado por su excelente precisión.
