A crime fiction miniseries that draws you into the intrigue in its first exposure, this is the kind of story where you have to have your eye wide open before continuing, otherwise, you will end up swallowed by the plot. The simultaneous flashbacks that are running within the context, help us to understand much of the story, really has done a very good job to continue to feed our interest.

Una miniserie de ficción criminal que te adentra en la intriga en su primera exposición, esta es de ese tipo de historias en que tienes que tener el ojo bien abierto antes de continuar, pues sino, terminarás tragado por la trama. Los flashbacks simultáneos que van corriendo dentro del contexto, nos ayudan a comprender gran parte de la historia, de verdad que se ha hecho muy buen trabajo para seguir alimentando nuestro interés.

The Mess You Leave Behind is a Spanish miniseries premiering on December 11, 2020, directed by Carlos Montero along with Silvia Quer and Roger Gual. The series is an adaptation of director Carlos Montero's novel of the same name published in 2016. It stars Inma Cuesta and Bárbara Lennie, with Tamar Novas, Arón Piper, Roberto Enríquez and Roque Ruíz in the cast. The series was produced by Vaca Films and distributed by Netflix Spain with a length of 8 chapters of 40 minutes each. The music was composed by Lucio Godoy and Ricardo Curto, and the opening song by Xoel López. The photography was done by Isaac Vila, who shows us not only the most shocking moments of the scenes but also the beautiful landscapes of Galicia, where the series was filmed.

El desorden que dejas es una miniserie española estrenada el 11 de diciembre del 2020, dirigida por Carlos Montero junto con Silvia Quer y Roger Gual. La serie es una adaptación de la novela homónima del director Carlos Montero publicada en 2016. Está protagonizada por Inma Cuesta y Bárbara Lennie, contando en el reparto con Tamar Novas, Arón Piper, Roberto Enríquez y Roque Ruíz. La serie fue producida por Vaca Films y distribuida por Netflix España con una extensión de 8 capítulos de 40 minutos cada uno. La música fue realizada por Lucio Godoy y Ricardo Curto, y la canción de apertura por Xoel López. La fotografía estuvo hecha por Isaac Vila, quien nos muestra no solo los momentos más impactantes de las escenas sino que también los hermosos paisajes de Galicia, lugar donde fue rodada la serie.
Plot of the serie
The story is centered in a town near Coruña, where a literature teacher named Raquel Valero (Inma Cuesta), gets a job in a high school to teach in this area. The place where they move to is the hometown of Raquel's husband, Germán (Tamar Novas) who convinces her to go with her to start a new life together. After starting her job, Raquel discovers that the teacher before her; Elvira Ferreiro Martínez "Viruca" (Bárbara Lennie) died by suicide which left her completely bewildered.
From that moment on Raquel begins to live a series of eventualities that make her investigate Viruca's death, acquiring suspicions that revolve around one of her students; Iago Nogueira (Arón Piper), who seems to have had a relationship with Viruca. Raquel gets into the lion's den and gradually her investigation will lead her to discover more and more lurid things about her environment and her family.
At the beginning, during the first chapter, I saw how the story was unfolding normally, until I discovered, almost at the end, that the sequence was unfolding in two different timelines, like a constant flashback that fed the events taking place in the present. There I realized that the plot was starring two different people; Viruca, who was the literature teacher who died of a supposed suicide, and Raquel, who replaces her in her position at the institute after her death. At that moment I understood that the series is very good at keeping its mystery until the end, explaining things little by little from beginning to end.
Trama de la serie
La historia está centrada en un pueblo cerca de Coruña, donde una profesora de literatura llamada Raquel Valero (Inma Cuesta), consigue trabajo en un instituto de preparatoria para dar clases en esta área. El lugar donde se mudan es el pueblo natal del esposo de Raquel, Germán (Tamar Novas) quien la convence de irse con ella para comenzar una nueva vida juntos. Después de comenzar su trabajo, Raquel descubre que la profesora que la antecedía; Elvira Ferreiro Martínez “Viruca” (Bárbara Lennie) murió por suicidio lo que la dejó completamente desconcertada.
A partir de ese momento Raquel comienza a vivir una serie de eventualidades que la hacen investigar sobre la muerte de Viruca, adquiriendo sospechas que giran alrededor de uno de sus estudiantes; Iago Nogueira (Arón Piper), quien parece haber sostenido una relación con Viruca. Raquel se mete en la boca del lobo y paulatinamente su investigación la irá llevando a descubrir cosas cada vez más escabrosas sobre su entorno y sus familiares.
Al principio, durante el primer capítulo, veía como la historia transcurría normalmente, hasta que descubrí, casi al final, que la secuencia se desenvolvía en dos líneas de tiempo diferentes, como un flashback constante que alimentaba a los sucesos que acontecían en el presente. Allí me di cuenta que la trama era protagonizada por dos personas distintas; Viruca, quien fue la profesora de literatura que murió por un supuesto suicidio, y Raquel, quien la reemplaza en su puesto del instituto posteriormente a su fallecimiento. En ese momento comprendí que la serie es muy buena para mantener su misterio hasta el final, explicándonos poco a poco las cosas de principio a fin.
Another aspect to note is the connection that is generated in these two timelines, through two people who did not know each other thoroughly. Viruca was a divorced woman who had money problems, and who had to do demeaning things in order to get ahead and help her parents. She is a woman of strength, who always did what she wanted when she could but did not measure the consequences. Unlike Raquel, her opposite in this story, who was a fragile woman with some events from her past that still affected her, such as the death of her mother; Carmen (Chelo Falcón), which she still has not been able to overcome and still dreams of her death. Raquel's marriage to Germán was not the most satisfactory either, as the conflicts with her husband made it even heavier along with the strange mysterious events that haunted her.
Truly, the direction of the series has done a great job as a dramatic mystery thriller, as each episode as it ends leaves us with more questions that build up to the end of the last episode. It is quite difficult to connect the pieces, but within the story itself we already have an idea of what truly happened in that tragedy. The characters seem to be well crafted and their roles well played out in the scope of the story, but there were moments that were predictable to my eye, which left me somewhat disappointed, however, not entirely, as the rest of the story is so involving that you forget the imperfect details by far.
For many, it may seem annoying or boring how slow the story moves, I must confess that I am one of those people who prefer movies or series with a quick sequence, without fillers and without giving many turns to the subject, but in this case it was not so. Every moment for me was so important from beginning to end, from the beautiful scenic details of the Galician region of Spain, to the most trivial dialogues uttered by the characters.
Otro aspecto a notar es la conexión que se genera en estas dos líneas temporales, a través de dos personas que no se conocían a fondo. Viruca era una mujer divorciada que tenía problemas de dinero, y que tuvo que hacer cosas denigrantes para poder avanzar y ayudar a sus padres. Es una mujer con fortaleza, que siempre hizo lo quiso cuando pudo pero que no medía las consecuencias. A diferencia de Raquel, su contraria en esta historia, quien era una mujer frágil con algunos eventos de su pasado que aún le afectaban, como por ejemplo, la muerte de su madre; Carmen (Chelo Falcón), la cual todavía no ha podido superar y aún sueña con su muerte. El matrimonio de Raquel con Germán tampoco era el más satisfactorio, pues los conflictos con su esposo hicieron aún más pesadez junto con los extraños eventos misteriosos que la acechaban.
De verdad que la dirección de la serie ha hecho un gran trabajo como thriller de misterio dramático, ya que cada capítulo, al terminar, nos deja con más preguntas que se van acumulando hasta el final del último episodio. Es bastante difícil conectar las piezas, pero dentro de la misma historia ya tenemos una idea de lo que verdaderamente pasó en esa tragedia. Los personajes parecen estar bien trabajados y sus papeles bien desenvueltos en el ámbito de la historia, pero hubo momentos que fueron previsibles a mi vista, lo que me dejó algo decepcionado, sin embargo, no del todo, pues el resto de la historia es tan envolvente que olvidas por mucho los detalles imperfectos.
Para muchos, puede parecer molesto o aburrido lo lento que transita la historia, debo confesar que soy de las personas que prefieren las películas o series con una secuencia rápida, sin rellenos y sin darle muchas vueltas al asunto, pero en este caso no fue así. Cada instante para mí fue tan importante de principio a fin, desde los hermosos detalles paisajísticos de la región gallega de España, hasta los diálogos más triviales que proferían los personajes.
Many would say that this type of story would not have been well adapted if it had been done by someone else, in a perfectionist perspective it was the same writer of the novel who should have created the film adaptation, otherwise it would have been a series' bodrio. This is completely false, I don't think many would have liked "Misery" or "The Shinning" if Stephen King had directed them, firstly because he is not a filmmaker, he is a writer, and secondly, he knows very well that it would not have had good results, why, I don't know, he will say it for a reason. The point is that the series wouldn't have been better if someone else had directed it, we can't all have the same perspective, but anyway, that's something we'll never find out.
The Mess You Leave Behind is one of those Spanish mystery dramas that leave us intrigued but not completely open-mouthed, there are moments that are predictable and others that really surprise you, I particularly liked it, although I hated it at the beginning, I ended up loving it at the end. I give it a score of 7.5/10 and recommend this miniseries if you don't have a marathon to watch on Sunday afternoons at home.
Muchos dirían que este tipo de historias no hubiera sido bien adaptada de haberla hecho otra persona, en una perspectiva perfeccionista era el mismo escritor de la novela quien debía crear la adaptación cinematográfica, puesto que si no, hubiera sido un bodrio de serie. Esto es completamente falso, no creo que a muchos le hubieran gustado “Misery” o “The Shinning” de haberlas dirigido Stephen King, en primer lugar porque él no es cineasta, es escritor, y en segundo lugar, él sabe muy bien que no hubiera tenido buenos resultados, ¿por qué?, no lo sé, por algo él lo dirá. El punto es que la serie no hubiera quedado mejor si la hubiera dirigido otra persona, no todos podemos tener la misma perspectiva, pero en fin, es algo que jamás vamos a averiguar.
El desorden que dejas es uno de esos dramas de misterio españoles que nos dejan intrigados pero no con la boca abierta del todo, hay momentos que son predecibles y otros que de verdad te sorprenden, a mi particularmente me ha gustado, aunque al principio la aborrecía, terminé amándola al final. Le doy una puntuación de 7.5/10 y recomiendo esta miniserie si no tienes un maratón que ver en las tardes de domingo en tu hogar.
