The most asked questions I hear from friends and family when I tell them about Hive are…
How does it have value? Where does the money come from?
After much explanation about the US dollar value peg to gold as a defunct standard, the whole conversation usually ends in them shaking their head in exasperation.
It is quite a unique conversation in my life, as most of my friends and family are intelligent people. But it doesn’t seem to matter how many facts I quote about the dissolution of the gold standard, or examples of real world monetary systems that have collapsed due to economic mismanagement, nine time out of ten they simply won’t accept the fact that all modern day currency is prescribed value through belief.
Yet most of them agree that there is massive injustice in the world, mainly caused by warring factions in the political and economic world. They recognize that something needs to change to redress the balance of power, but they are scared of the disruptive technologies that can potentially change the status quo. It is one of the most obvious examples of cognitive dissonance that I see from intelligent people that I know on a regular basis.
Belief in a social system, belief in a government, belief that banks and big business have your best interests at heart - these are all a question of belief. But what happens when the systems that people have put their faith in all their lives show themselves to be rigged? First, people revert to herd mentality based upon fear. This is how kings, religions and political groups throughout history have guided the narrative. But after a certain point we reach the fulcrum, a place where the weight of belief is overcome by increasing contradictory facts, and this is when the scales can shift.
All it takes is for the majority to place that belief in decentralized finance to see a fundamental change in what constitutes value, and it is probable that we see this tipping of the scales in our lifetime.
Ha ha, but few non-crypto folks want to hear that type of thing… so I decided to use this post today to show as simply as I can how hive is a real currency, with real value/utility based on the belief that the crypto markets prescribe to it.
Over a nice cuppa coffee, that I bought with hive.
This post goes out to all my non-crypto friends out there. I shall be showing some of them this instead of repeating the same conversation endlessly 😂
Coffee on the Hive Blockchain
A few weeks ago I decided to bite the bullet and order some coffee from a hive witnesses' business that I had seen mentioned in a post over a year ago.
@c0ff33a runs a node on the hive blockchain and has been around for years since the steem days. I first met him about eighteen months ago when I was more involved in hive politics, and I have to say he is one of only three witnesses who ever responded to me on discord when I used to spend a good portion of my time representing various communities, and curie behind the scenes.
Definitely consider voting @c0ff33a with one of your witness votes if you have any spare!
C0ff33a runs an artisan coffee suppliers from here in the UK called White Rose Coffee Roasters.
At the moment they can only supply UK addresses due restrictions with the pandemic... but to all you UK hive content creators, I can tell you that the coffee I bought is top notch. Great for powering on through an afternoon writing.
I usually buy supermarket fair trade coffee for my cafeteria, which isn't that bad, but the Mexican Arabica that I chose was head and shoulders above any supermarket coffee.
Mexico Siltepec El Jaguar Washed Arabica Roasted Coffee is a tasty brew.
You can pay with Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum directly on the website, but the best thing is that it is also possible to pay using hive by contacting @c0ff33a on discord. C0ff33a told me that in the future they hope to have hive payments available direct from the website.
The Ordering Process
Step 1:
I contacted C0ff33a and agreed a price based on hive market value at the time of purchase.
Step 2:
Then sent over the agreed hive payment from my peakd hive wallet with a memo listing the type and amount of coffee I wanted to make life easier for them.
Step 3:
Supplied my delivery address in DM and let them know the payment had been sent.
Step 4:
Three days later my coffee arrived.

It really was that easy!
The 500 gram pack of Mexican Aribica coffee I bought worked out at only £10 a pack. For the wieght value this was a little less than the price of my usual supermarket brand, but is was so much tastier, and it was a washed bean variety, from an ethical farm scheme in Mexico. I visited the Yucatan peninsular three years ago to scuba dive, and its really nice to know that the value of my purchase is going directly to this Mexican coffee farm cooperative.
There are a tone of different artisan coffees to choose from on the White Rose Coffee Roasters Website, so you'll have plenty of different tastes to sample. I plan on purchasing two packs of the Brazil Nuts Hive Coffee in around a weeks time, one for me and one for my mother.
I will then direct her, and her doubting friend, to this article showing both the utility of hive in action, and also that they can get artisan coffee without forking out crazy prices.
All that is left for me to say is... go buy some hive coffee!
