Sword and Board - Board games and Card games!
Sword and Board is a hobby shop for tabletop geeks and collectible card game players in Cape Town, South Africa. Specifically, they are on Koeberg Road, Milnerton here!
I was there yesterday for a bit of Sunday gaming and to socialize with some friends!
The shop is situated within a gated security complex where you need to sign in, which makes it nice and safe. Even on a weekend when the other businesses in the complex are closed, the security is ever-present.
I have been involved in board gaming and card games from the age of about 12, I am not even sure. I started playing Warhammer 40,000 tabletop when I was around 14. Back in those days, we played 3rd edition of the ruleset. Nowadays everyone is playing 8th edition of the game!
I stopped playing the game around 5th edition. I only ever played one game of 6th edition and then totally skipped out on 7th edition of Warhammer 40,000.
The gap between those editions were as a result of being a parent to small children and going through a divorce and all the rest of the drama life can throw you.
Now my daughter is 14, myson is 11, turning 12 and my step-son is turning 10 this year. It will be a family outing to go to the hobby shop and spend some time gaming and socializing.
Sword and Board is the closest hobbyshop to where I live and I am delighted that they have grown so much. The new store is 4 times bigger than the old one!
I am looking forward to spending many a weekend here. Let's run through the pictures.
Here we have the upstairs shop. There are boardgame tables and other tables for card games to be played.
Here are just some of the stock that the shop has on offer. Warhammer Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40,000, Bloodbowel, Starwars X-Wing Commander, paints, models, scenery, cards, books and standalone games. There is so much on offer here!
Here are some of the tables for card games. @merenludick and I will be sitting here to play a best out of 3 Pokemon battle.
There are a ton of display miniatures. Stuff that was masterfully painted by members of the community and store owners.
The vaulted hall of the downstairs gaming area. This place has warhammer gaming tables that also do well for other gaming systems.
@merenludick. Meren is busy considering what to deploy from his hand in a Pokemon battle. The game demands a lot of logical thinking and carefully reading the words.
My faithful Scolipede. The max evolved form of Venapede. Once this bad boy is powered up with 4 energy cards he can use Steamroller for a massive 140 damage. He survived this match on 10HP only, but managed to beat 4 other pokemon instantly in that condition.
The battle in full throttle. We played a best out of 3 with Meren getting 1 win and myself getting 2. Better luck next time Meren!
Two players were also throwing down in a game of Blood Bowl. This is like American Football, but with fantasy creatures. Here we have the Bloodseekers of Khorne facing a Black Orc team. A real crumpfest!
The goblins in the team remembered where the ball was and managed to score a touchdown!
A friend of mine was also there. He brought along some of his Space Marines for Warhammer 40,000 to sit and paint. The guys often do this on Sundays and sit and chat while they paint.
Carefully, a shoulder pouldron is painted on the rim.
Once painted, there Angels of Death will be ready to take to the battlefield and cleanse the galaxy of the impure!
One of the army leaders on a Space Marine bike. Super tough!
Here is a corner where loose Magic the Gathering cards can be purchased.
I could probably spend a whole day just sorting through cards and building decks.
Overall I could spend a massive amounts of time here! But it will likely be every other weekend. We shall see! I've managed to come to the store twice in one year and that's more than I have done in a long time hahaha!
But my son is very interested and he had a friend that will also enjoy coming through.
More posts about wargaming will follow!
Cheers!
