Something different from what we're used to is today's jazz matinee. The stage is not going to belong exclusively to one artist or one group - no, what is going to follow is a constant change of jazz styles, but they all have one thing in common: they are almost as fresh as dew from the vinyl press. In view of the enormous number of new releases every month, it is difficult to devote separate attention to each artist, so I came up with the idea of presenting a few examples from the box of jazz chocolates in compressed form from time to time.
Die heutige Jazz-Matinee fällt ein wenig anders aus, als wir es bislang gewohnt waren. Denn nicht ausschließlich einem Künstler/Künstlerin oder Formation gehört die Bühne – nein, was nun folgt, ist ein steter Wechsel von Stilarten des Jazz, die aber alle eine Gemeinsamkeit aufweisen: Sie kommen nahezu taufrisch aus der Vinylpresse. Da es, bei der enormen Anzahl von monatlichen Neuerscheinungen, schwierig wird, sich jedem Künstler gesondert zu widmen, kam mir die Idee, in unregelmäßigen Abständen einige wenige Exemplare aus der Box mit Jazz-Pralinen komprimiert vorzustellen.
Sameka & Strings - Merlin’s Journey
Sameka, a quintet dedicated to combining the most diverse influences, offers us a stylistic kaleidoscope that's governed by the laws of modern jazz fusion, leaving much room for improvisation and very interesting arrangements. There is a lot of interaction within the ensemble, themes and solos are played as duets, which enriches the sound. A great musical adventure! Merlin's journey impressively confirms this, as Sameka decided to include a string quartet and oud virtuoso Hesham Hamra in the classical jazz line-up.
Sameka, ein Quintett, das sich der Fusion verschiedenster Einflüsse verschrieben hat, bietet uns ein stilistisches Kaleidoskop, das den Gesetzen der modernen Jazzfusion unterliegt und viel Raum für Improvisation und sehr interessante Arrangements lässt. Es gibt viel Interaktion innerhalb des Ensembles, Themen und Soloparts werden im Duett gespielt, was den Klang bereichert. Ein großartiges musikalisches Abenteuer! Merlins Reise bestätigt dies eindrücklich, da sich Sameka dafür entschied, zur klassischen Jazz-Besetzung ein Streichquartett und den Oud-Virtuosen Hesham Hamra einzugliedern.
Cabaret Contemporain - Club Sensible
Exactly 15 years ago, Giani Caserotto, Ronan Courty, Simon Drappier, Julien Loutelier and Fabrizio Rat came together to form Cabaret Contemporain. Their aim: to use acoustic instruments to bring jazz and techno music closer together. The group has an incredible potential, an enormous freshness and an unbroken love for all kinds of music. You can dance to it, enjoy it and listen to it attentively. This album is an example of how interesting this open music can be. If it is created without nonchalance and without using the clichés of techno music or sticking too closely to the conventions of jazz, with mutual listening and artistic sincerity, it offers the chance of a remarkable and exciting experience. All tracks were recorded live without any technical aids.
Vor genau 15 Jahren haben sich Giani Caserotto, Ronan Courty, Simon Drappier, Julien Loutelier und Fabrizio Rat zu Cabaret Contemporain zusammengefunden. Ihr Vorhaben - mit akustischen Instrumenten den Jazz und die Techno-Musik etwas näher aneinander zu schmiegen. Die Formation hat ein unglaubliches Potential, eine enorme Frische und eine ungebrochene Liebe zu allen Arten von Musik. Man kann zu ihr tanzen, sie genießen und ihr aufmerksam zuhören. Dieses Album ist ein Beispiel dafür, wie viel Interessantes diese offene Musik zu bieten hat. Wenn sie ohne Nonchalance und ohne die Klischees der Techno-Musik zu bedienen oder sich zu sehr an die Konventionen des Jazz zu halten, mit gegenseitigem Zuhören und künstlerischer Aufrichtigkeit entsteht, bietet sie die Chance auf eine bemerkenswerte und spannende Erfahrung. Alle Tracks wurden ohne technische Hilfsmittel live eingespielt.
Kristin Asbjørnsen - Hjemveier
It has been two decades since the Norwegian artist entered the jazz stage with the album "Wayfaring Strangers". Since then, she has taken almost every musical path that seemed exciting to her. Songs characterised by a dark warmth alternated with African sounds or she brought it into Nordic jazz. Now she also uses her mother tongue.
"Ambiguous music, beautifully sung and played. The lyrical mood of the songs, sung entirely in Norwegian, is emphasised by the special voice and phrasing. The unusual instrumentation gives the album a soft and pleasant sound. Kristin Asbjørnsen has once again enchanted me with her music."
Es sind zwei Jahrzehnte vergangen, seit die norwegische Künstlerin mit dem Album »Wayfaring Strangers« die Jazz-Bühne betrat. Seither schlug sie musikalisch nahezu jeden Weg ein, der ihr spannend erschien. Songs, geprägt von einer doch finsteren Wärme, wechselten sich mit afrikanischen Klängen oder sie nahm die Esoterik mit in den nordischen Jazz. Nun bedient sie sich auch ihrer Muttersprache. »Vieldeutige Musik, wunderschön gesungen und gespielt. Die lyrische Stimmung der komplett in norwegischer Sprache gesungenen Lieder wird durch die besondere Stimme und Phrasierung deutlich. Die ungewöhnliche Instrumentierung verleiht dem Album einen weichen und angenehmen Klang. Kristin Asbjørnsen hat mich wieder einmal mit ihrer Musik verzaubert.«
Evita Polidoro - Nerovivo
She studied drumming and singing at the Siena Jazz University. It is a talent factory like few others in Europe. At the time she was in charge of the beat with Dee Dee Bridgwater and the Fearless Five of Enrico Ravas. But times are changing, and from now on she is the leading figure, deciding where the music express is going.
Music critic Jacek Brun comments: "This is an example of music where the most important things happen between the instruments, where the musicians' minds meet. What matters is what the musicians play, how they hear each other, but also how the piece is composed and the artistic idea behind it. Beautiful, atmospheric music full of unusual sounds and surprising arrangements.
Ausgebildet wurde als Schlagzeugerin und Sängerin an der Sienna Jazz-University ausgebildet. Einer Talentschmiede, wie es nur wenige in Europa gibt. Danach war sie in Verantwortung für den Takt bei Dee Dee Bridgwater und den Enrico Ravas Fearless Five. Doch die Zeiten ändern sich, denn ab sofort ist sie die Führungsfigur und entscheidet, wohin der Musik-Express unterwegs ist.
Der Musikkritiker Jacek Brun kommentiert dazu: »Dies ist ein Beispiel für Musik, bei der das Wichtigste zwischen den Instrumenten passiert, dort, wo sich die Gedanken der Musiker treffen. Wichtig ist, was die Musiker spielen, wie sie einander hören, aber auch, wie das Stück komponiert ist und welche künstlerische Idee dahinter steckt. Wunderschöne, stimmungsvolle Musik voller ungewöhnlicher Klänge und überraschender Arrangement-Ideen.«
Conexão Berlin - Vagabundo
The Conexão Berlin project originates from an idea by percussionist Andreas Weiser, who spent a long time in South America and tried to combine the local elements with European jazz. The band stands for groove-emphasised, joyful instrumental music between jazz, South American sounds and more, as well as the combination of ambition and emotional power, mind and body in a very unique musical language.
In Spanish and Portuguese, the title Vagabundo is actually a derogatory term for drifters, thieves and homeless people. In the spirit of Chaplin's Tramp, however, it is used in songs on the album such as "Homesick to an unknown place", "Searching for peace", "Seduction of inadequacy" or the title track to describe artists who have not exactly been richly blessed by life.
Das Projekt Conexão Berlin entstammt einer Idee von dem Perkussionisten Andreas Weiser, der sich lange im südamerikanischen Raum aufhielt und die dortigen Elemente mit dem europäischen Jazz zu verbinden versuchte. Die Band steht für eine groovebetonte, lustvolle Instrumentalmusik zwischen Jazz, südamerikanischen Klängen und mehr, sowie der Verbindung von Anspruch und emotionaler Kraft, Geist und Körper in einer ganz eigenen Musiksprache.
Im Spanischen und Portugiesischen ist der Titel Vagabundo eigentlich ein Schimpfwort für Herumtreiber, Diebe und Obdachlose. Ganz im Sinne des Chaplin’schen Tramps steht er in Stücken des Albums wie „Homesick to an unknown place“, „Searching for peace“, „Seduction of inadequacy“ oder dem Titelstück aber für vom Leben nicht gerade reich beschenkte Lebenskünstler.
Halva - Musafir
Halva, which can be translated as guest or traveller, attempts to musically connect the different cultures of Eastern Europe. Nicolaas Cottenie, the head of the band, bases his new compositions on the rhythms of old traditions from Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Turkey.
The critics say: "It is a thoroughly authentic album that speaks the rich language of contemporary world music, skilfully handles emotions and is intelligent. Beautiful themes, sometimes lively, sometimes solemn, carefully arranged and perfectly played, are captivating. You can hear that the ensemble understands each other perfectly, that each of the musicians finds themselves in this convention and together they create a beautiful sound and colourful musical landscapes."
Halva, was soviel wie Gast oder Reisender bedeutet, versucht die verschiednen Kulturen im osteuropäischen Raum musikalisch miteinander zu verbinden. Nicolaas Cottenie, der Kopf der Formation, stützt seine Neukompositionen auf die Rhythmen alter Traditionen von Bulgarien, Rumänien, Griechenland bis zur Türkei.
Die Kritik sagt dazu: »Es ist ein durch und durch authentisches Album, das die reiche Sprache der zeitgenössischen Weltmusik spricht, gekonnt mit Emotionen umgeht und intelligent ist. Wunderschöne Themen, mal lebhaft, mal feierlich, sorgfältig arrangiert und perfekt gespielt, fesseln. Man hört, dass sich das Ensemble bestens versteht, dass sich jeder der Musiker in dieser Konvention wiederfindet und gemeinsam einen schönen Klang und bunte musikalische Landschaften schaffen.«

Harri Stojka - Stones Free
The finale is reserved for Harri Stojka, who has not only been spoiling his Austrian fans with his virtuoso guitar playing for many years, but is also an integral part of the gypsy jazz scene far beyond the country's borders. On his new album, as the title might suggest, he dedicates his music to the songs of the Rolling Stones. A welcome opportunity for Stones fans to relive the old tunes.
Why I still chose a title that wasn't written by Jagger/Richards probably has something to do with the fact that I wouldn't necessarily put on a T-shirt with a sticking-out tongue.
Der Abschluss ist Harri Stojka vorbehalten, der seit vielen Jahren nicht nur seine österreichische Fangemeinde mit seinem virtuosen Gitarrenspiel verwöhnt, sondern weit über die Landesgrenzen hinweg ein fester Bestandteil der Gypsy-Jazz-Szene ist. Auf seinem neuesten Werk, wie der Titel vielleicht schon erahnen lässt, widmet er sich den Songs der Rolling Stones. Für Stones-Lieberhaber somit eine willkommene Gelegenheit die alten Steine neu zu erleben.
Warum ich mich dennoch für einen Titel entschieden habe, der nicht von Jagger/Richards stammt, hat wohl damit zu tun, dass ich nicht unbedingt ein T-Shirt mit herausgestreckter Zunge überziehen würde.
