I was up early and not thinking, let the cat out at 5 AM this morning before sunrise. In warmer weather I have crossed paths with this skunk. Skunks are nocturnal and are usually only around at night. A few times I've almost stepped on him walking out of my cabin door. We would both be surprised, the skunk would calmly turn and start to walk away. I would remain calm and make no sudden movements. The last thing I want is to be sprayed with stink from a scared skunk. My other cat has been sprayed before. Now it was this cat's turn to learn his lesson about not bothering skunks.
We already had a de-skunking cat bath recipe from the other cat being sprayed. The original online recipe had called for Hydrogen Peroxide to be in it, but we didn't want the cat licking the peroxide out of his fur, so we left it out. It still worked fine.

De-Skunking Cat Bath Recipe:
- Big Bowl of Water
- Tablespoon of Baking Soda
- Two Squirts of Dawn or equivalent animal safe dish soap
Use a washcloth for the sponge bath, be sure to hold the cat tight. Keep the kitty calm and reassured with the sweet sounds of your voice. Use a towel afterwards to dry the cat's fur as much as you can.
It must be chilly with all that wet fur, he just wanted to go inside the warm cabin.

Below is a picture of the fresher smelling cat warming up by the fire. He doesn't look too pleased with the whole ordeal. I hope he's learned not to mess with a skunk. A few hours later there was no hint of the skunk smell.
