The Jumbos have started laying early!!!

Going out to the quail cage today I made a pleasant discovery, it seems that the Jumbo quail have started laying about a week early!! This is sooo exciting! I am expecting about 8-10 eggs a day, all of which I plan on hatching as they come. The chicks have been getting quite a buzz amongst the homesteaders here in the Ozarks and interest in the chicks is on the rise!!!

If you didnt catch my first blog on quail eggs, they are packed with nutrition and high in protein. They also contain no "bad" cholesterol and much healthier than a chicken egg. The Jumbo eggs that my girls are producing now are the same type of egg, just about 50% bigger.

It normally takes about 4-5 standard eggs to equal one chicken egg, yet only 2 or 3 of the jumbo to equal the same. The ladies here will lay almost one egg per day until the deep winter, which will provide many many eggs for food and to sell!

To top things off, look at the size of these brids! They still have one more week of growth before they are full adult and will start breeding, and should get a few ounces bigger than even what you see here! The standard quail I traded with @papa-pepper for rabbits I could grab and move with one hand. As you can see here, they barely fit and I had a hard time getting a good shot with one hand haha!

Standard Coturnix Quail will provide 3-5 ounces of meat per bird. These big ol monsters here will give us 12-14 ounces, at only about 50% more food, 4x the meat, but less food is always a win!!

I love raising these animals, and I love even more when I get to share the new developments as I learn. Thanks for stopping by and Steem on Steemians!!!
