Part 2 of my steemit sustainability series looks at the simple process of growing your own avocados. Just like pineapples (which I examined last time) avocados are incredibly easy to grow!
Simply take your avocado stone, clean it and then gently push three sicks into the skin to support it above a glass of water. Here we have used incense sticks.
Make sure you position the stone the right way round. There will be a small point at the top end of the stone and the base (the root end) will be slightly flatter.
Top up with clean water every few days making sure the base is always submerged.
After a few weeks, the root will appear...
When the root is an inch long, transplant into a pot. A few weeks later you should see the young plant emerge from the soil.
Make sure you give it lots of love!
...and of course water & sunshine :)
After another few weeks it will look like this.
At which point it is ready to plant in your desired location taking into consideration that it will grow to be somewhere between 20 - 40 ft.
Be patient for the fruit to appear. This will take anywhere between 5 - 13 years.
And then you can begin the process again!
Hope you enjoyed this presentation. I look forward to teaching you more next week...
