Free Invention Idea #4

A freaking flying saucer!

Not really an invention, more of an improvement. But, seriously, why don't people already do this? Just wrap your quadcopter in some of that balloon mylar, build a frame out of that springy wire (if you do it better than my little 3D model I whipped together, you can even get some ducted fan action across the top), then fill it with helium. Just enough to balance the weight a little. Here's a calculator for the volume of a Sphere cap, you just double that to get an estimate of cubic meters and multiply that by 1.1 kg. A quadcopter can weigh less than 250 grams so a saucer about a meter wide is more than enough.

Benefits:

  • it looks like a flying saucer
  • it bounces off walls and trees
  • it takes less battery drain to hold it up in the air
  • it looks like a freaking flying saucer

Of course, it will fly slower, and it's more visible. Turbulence and winds will affect it more. But it's much less likely to crash so for photographers and the like it might save your expensive equipment.

As usual, feel free to point out where I am wrong, and if it works for you and you become rich and famous, remember that I could use a few bucks...
