The Journey of a Hivean - Games on Hive

HEADER_The_Journey_of_a_Hivean_-_Play_Games_On_HIVE.jpg

Introduction

Over time, and through my years on Hive, I have come to discover that there is a whole lot that can be done on the blockchain aside from writing, and this entire realm includes gaming. There are numerous games built on the Hive blockchain with the Play-to-Earn (P2E) system put in place, and that is what I will cover in this article. This post can serve as a guide on how to get started with games on Hive.

The three (3) games I will be looking at:

  • Splinterlands - A card collectible game
  • dCity - A game where players build their online virtual economy through the skill of managing resources.
  • Rising Star - A game where players can grow their online virtual musical career

What I will focus on

  • What the game is all about
  • How to get started with these games.
  • Creating an account if you don't already have one, thanks to your Hive account.
  • Some helpful tips while playing the games
  • How to join the game's community to connect with other gamers.

Important to know

These games are only a few out of the numerous games on the Hive blockchain. It is okay not to like a particular game or even like one game more than the other, but the most important thing is to play and have fun while playing. The procedures or entry level for these games are quite simple, and for some games, they are free to play until you want to buy some in-game items to give you a playing edge over other players.

Splinterlands

Splinterlands is a collectible card-playing game where players get to trade, buy, or rent cards. The game is focused on battle strategy against other players, where you make use of cards consisting of a summoner and monsters to fight. It is strategy first, as what card you choose and why you chose such a card are important. You select the cards you want based on your strategy, then the AI decides the moves.

The play-to-earn feature of the game comes in through wins from ranked matches and free or paid tournaments. Through your win, you get DEC (Dark Energy Crystal), which can be used for in-game purchases, and you get SPS (Splintershards) through staking and winning ranked matches. SPS is used in the governance of the game Splinterlands. Other ways to earn from playing the game include:

  • Daily wins of at least 2 to 5 battles
  • Joining a guild for team rewards.

The game has card types and rarity levels, which are

Card Types

  • Summoners
  • Monsters

Rarity Level

  • Common
  • Rare
  • Epic
  • Legendary

Each card is made up of speed, armour, mana cost, and attack type. All together, this helps to determine the mana cost required for each card, as there is a mana cost for each battle. This means if a battle has a mana cost requirement of 25, you can only use cards that sum up to 25 or less than 25 for the battle.

How to get started

  • Go to splinterlands.com
  • When the page opens up, you should see something like this:

image.png

  • Through the navbar, you will see a couple of words that serve as links to scale through the site.
  • Click on the login button at the top right of your screen or desktop if you are using a computer.
  • If you have your keychain extension installed on your system, you can simply use that to log in.
  • But if you do not have the Hive keychain extension installed, you can simply input your Hive username in the section made available for the username.
  • Then click on login with Email address and password.
  • Next, you will be asked to input your email address and password, or your Hive username and posting keys.
  • You can use your Hive username and posting key to log in.

Creating an account if you don't already have one

Creating an account for Splinterland is quite easy, but sometimes it is not needed if you already have a blockchain account with Hive. This is because Splinterlands is built on the Hive blockchain; therefore, an account on Hive means an account on Splinterlands.

image.png

Nevertheless, if you do not have a Hive account, you can still play the Splinterlands game. Simply do this:

  • Go to splinterlands.com
  • Click on the login button
  • Choose Register
  • Input the requested details
  • Approve the notify me button and the terms of service button
  • Verify you are not a robot
  • Then create your password.

Also, if you do not want to create a password because you might forget it, you can bypass the create password process by authorizing with a Wombat, Coinbase, or MetaMask wallet.

Some helpful tips while playing the games

  • Focus on your summoner card. This card helps to bring out the potential of your monster cards. So, spend more time upgrading or selecting a good summoner.
  • Although when you sign up or get started for the first time on Splinterlands, you get a free pack containing cards you can use to play free matches, if you want to play ranked matches or tournaments, you should consider buying more cards or renting them. For starters, focus on renting specific cards that can be instrumental in your battle strategy.
  • Play some free matches to see if you would like to continue playing the game before investing in cards.
  • Join the Splinterlands community on Hive to get updates, other players' progress, and more helpful tips from more experienced players.
  • You can learn from what top players on the leaderboard are doing and use the deck they are using as well.
  • Join the Discord community as well and stay connected with tons of other players.

How to join the game's community to connect with other gamers.

Joining the Splinterlands community is quite easy. Simply search for Splinterlands under communities on the Hive blockchain. When you find it, subscribe and engage with the community by reading posts, commenting, and responding to people's replies to your post.

Also on the Splinterlands website, you can scroll to the bottom of the page, and you will see their social media handles, pick which one you would like to follow, and if you want to follow all, that is fine.

dCity

This is another play-to-earn game where players manage the economy of their city. They are in charge of what happens financially to their city through their governing activities, ranging from income, taxes, and even down to war profits. Players can also buy and trade digital assets for the growth of their city's economy.

image.png

The cards traded are NFT-based building businesses and resources, and earnings can be earned in the Hive token of the game's token DCOIN. The game is basically a blockchain version of SimCity, where instead you get to earn tokens for playing. All you need to get started is a Hive account, a browser, and an internet connection. The game requires strategy as it involves helping other players, knowing when to help and when not to help, and preparing your city against events that may have a positive or negative effect.

How to get started

To get started on dCity,

  • Simply go to dcity.io
  • On the top right of the site, type in your Hive account

  • Then you will be asked to log in with your Hive keychain.

For dCity, signing in with your Hive account and keychain is the only way to access the game on a system. So, if you do not have a Hive keychain extension, I recommend you download it from hive-keychain.com

For mobile devices, all you need is your Hive username to log in to dCity.

Creating an account if you don't already have one

With dCity, your hive account is your dCity account. All you need is a Hive account, and you can use your Hive username to log in.

Some helpful tips while playing the games

  • Be strategic with your reason for doing anything, especially when helping out other players or receiving help from other players.

  • Use the free item and see how the earnings work.
  • Invest in undervalued assets you feel have potential or may be useful to you.
  • Read more about the game from the Hive community for a better understanding of what you are playing.
  • You can buy more assets from the marketplace in the game or buy from other players from the same marketplace in the game.

Rising Star

Here is another play-to-earn game, but this time it is focused on the life of a musician and their rise to fame. You get to earn tokens, that is the Hive token and the game token Starbits, by playing, completing tasks, working on your talent, and upgrading your skill.

image.png

On the launch of the website, you are welcomed immediately with music, which tells you that it is a music gaming website. The song is kind of rock or something of that class, but I am not quite sure. When you check it out, you should find out. This one is for the musicians and not only them, but the music lovers and fanatics as well. If you ever wanted to know what the career of a musician feels like, I guess this is the game for you. Mind you, the songs keep playing; after one finishes, the next one begins. For a moment, I forgot I wanted to play the game as I began to vibe to the nice jams, especially the song Conspiracy.

It is also important to know that this game comes with certain features that make it unique to play. They include:

  • You earn as you play
  • You get to own the NFTs of visual items and game characters that are influential to your music career.
  • You can track the progress of your music career.
  • The game is highly community-focused and driven.
  • It is built on the Hive blockchain.

More so, earning by playing the game takes place when you

  • Complete daily missions that come with their rewards
  • Purchasing skill cards to boost your earnings.
  • Join another crew or band to expand your uprising
  • Competing events where you or you and your band are to perform.
  • Referring a friend to play the game.

How to get started

To get started with Rising Star is as simple as long as you have a Hive account.

image.png

  • Also, do not forget to tick all the little boxes for the terms of play and conduct.
  • Create your avatar, the kind of artist you want them to be, what kind of song they sing, and begin with the basic stats.
  • Move on to manage your band and add your tracks.
  • The game is quite flexible; it can be played on both mobile and PC.

In Conclusion of this Tutorial

What is this post?
If you do not get what this post is about and why I wrote the post, it is completely understandable. A list of us hiveans have been asked to write out detailed tutorials for a massive idea @starkerz and his team are putting together, and this is my contribution to the project.

More information about this task can be found here:
The Journey to be a Hivean

You might have come across this post in the past few days, but what you might not know is that not all the tasks have been completed. Your contribution will be appreciated as you can reply to the post by offering your help.

When all the lessons are corrected and perfected, they will be compiled into a single account, and they will be there forever.

Corrections on this post are highly welcome. If you feel there is something I did not include omitted or need correcting, the comment section is open.

A huge shoutout to @ravenmus1c for the cool banner. She always delivers.
