제가 살고있는 곳은 한국 지방의 작은 마을 가평입니다.
(I live in a small rural village called Gapyeong in Korea.)
이곳에 가평고등학교가 자리 잡고 있습니다.
(Gapyeong High School is located here.)
가이사(Kaiser) 고등학교라는 또 다른 이름을 가진 학교입니다.
(Kaiser is another name for this school.)
지역의 명문 고등학교입니다.
(It is a prestigious high school in the area.)
제 막내 놈이 재학 중인 학교이죠.
(My littleboy goes to this school.)
학교의 기원은 1952년 5월 1일 가평중학원 으로부터 시작 되었습니다.
그러니까 한국전쟁 중이던 시기에 개원을 하였답니다.
(This school was founded under the name of Gapyeong Middle school on May 1, 1952 during the Korea War.)
전쟁 중이었지만 지역주민들은 아이들의 미래를 위해서 전쟁으로 파괴된 학교와 학생들을 위해 누추한 천막 몇 동을 지어 지역아이들에게 학업을 할 수 있도록 최선을 다하였습니다.
(Although it was during the war, local residents did their best to help their children study, setting up a shabby tent to replace the destroyed school.)
그러던 어느 날
당시 한국전에서 하루도 전투가 멈추질 않았던 가평엔 미 육군 40사단이 주둔 중이었습니다.
(In those days, the 40th U.S Army Division was stationed in Gapyeong, and war did not stop even a day in this area.)
당시 사단장이던 조셉 클린랜드 소장(Jeseph P.Cleland)은 자신의 주둔지를 순찰 중 우연히 허름한 천막에서 공부하는 아이들을 발견합니다.
(Captain Jeseph P. Cleland, the deputy commander was patrolling his camp when he happened to see children studying in a shabby tent.)
그리고 클린랜드 장군은 자신의 부대인 미 보병40사단 장병들에게 호소합니다.
(And General Cleland appeals to soldiers.)
그의 호소문에서 시작됐습니다.
“언제까지 미군과 유엔이 이 나라를 지켜 주지는 못할 것이지만”
(In his appeal begun “The United States and the UN will not be able to protect this country forever.”)
“이 아이들은 전쟁터에서도 공부를 합니다!!
(These children study on the battlefield !!)
희망이 있는 국민입니다. !!!
(They have a dream.!!!)
학교를 짓게 도움을 주십시요!!!!”
(Please help me build a school.!)
사단장의 호소문을 들은 장병들은 2불씩 모금을 시작하였습니다.
(Upon hearing what he said, the soldiers began to donate 2 dollars each. )
당시 15.000명 미 보병40사단 장병들 모두가 모금에 참여해 31.000달러를 모금합니다.
(All 15,000 soldiers from the 40th Infantry Division participate in the fundraising campaign and raise $ 31,000.)
그리고 하버드 대학 건축학과 출신인 사단 공병 대위였던 헤롤드 에이스 대위가 설계했습니다.
(And Captain Harold Ace, graduate of Harvard Department of Architecture, designed the building.)
모금이 되고 설계도가 완성된 후 1952년 9월 8일 지역 주민과 천막학교 학생들이 모여 조셉 클린랜드 (Jeseph P.Cleland)소장이 첫 삽을 뜬 가운데 기공식을 하고 40여일 후 인 1952년10월18일 학교가 완공됩니다.
(After the collection and the design were completed, On Sept. 8, 1952, local residents and students of the Tent School gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony with the first shovel by Jeseph P. Cleland, and 40 days later, on October 18, 1952, the school was completed.)
그리고 지역 주민과 학생들은 학교명을 클린랜드라 명하고 싶었습니다. 그러나 사단장인 클린랜드 소장은 가평 전투에서 미보병 40사단 최초로 전사한 19살의 카이저 케네스 하사를 기리기 위해 카이사 고등학교로 명명 하게 됩니다.
(Local residents and students wanted to name the school Cleland. However, Commander Cleland named it Kaiser High School in honor of the 19-year-old STAFF SERGEANT Kayser Kenneth, who was the first to die the Infantry 40 Division in the Battle of Gapyeong.)

그리고 한국전이 끝나고 미국으로 돌아간 클린랜드 소장은 자신과 40사단이 만든 장학금을 들고 매년 학교로 찾아와 장학금을 전하였답니다.
(Cleland went back to the united states and after the war, had visited the school every year with a scholarship raised by himself and the 40th Infantry Division.)
그가 영면한 75년까지
(Until his death in 1975.)
그리고 그의 유언으로 자신의 연금 중 일부를 장군의 부인께서 매년 장학금으로 들고 가평고등학교를 찾으셨다 합니다.
(In accordance with his will, a pat of his pensions had been passed on Gapyeong High School by his wife every year as a scholarship.)
2004년 11월 23일 부인께서 영면 하실 때 까지 계속해서~!!!!!!
(Until November 23, 2004, when the wife of the general died, ~ !!!!!!)
지금까지 가평고는 18.864명의 졸업생을 배출 하였고 국가 근대화에 많은 기여를 합니다.
(So far, Gapyeong High School has produced 18.864 graduates and contributes greatly to the modernization of the country.)
물론 지금도 가평고의 졸업식에는 미 40사단에서 빠지지 않고 참석하고 있으며 한국전 참전용사 분들을 초청하여 졸업식을 더 풍요롭게 하고 있습니다.
(Of course, the graduation ceremony of Gapyeong High School is still attended by the 40th Division of the U.S. and the school has invited veterans of the Korean War to enrich the graduation ceremony.)
군악대와 한미 장병들이 참석하는 가평고 졸업식은 한미 많은 장군들이 참석하는 별들의 축제입니다.!!!
(The graduation ceremony of Gapyeong High School, attended by military band and Korean and American soldiers, is a festival of stars from the U.S. and Korea.!!!)
가평고에서는 이러한 미 보병40사단의 뜻을 기리고자 카이사 역사관을 운영하고 있으며 기숙사 명 또한 클린랜드라 명하였습니다.
(In honor of the 40th Infantry Division's intention, Gapyeong High School is operating the Kaiser History Museum and named its dormitory Cleland.)
학교 곳곳에 미 보병 40사단을 기리는 기념물이 자리 잡고 있어 학생들은 항상 그 뜻을 잊지 않고 학업에 열중하고 있습니다.
(There are monuments in honor of the 40 infantry divisions in the school, and students study hard without forgetting their meanings.)
