My Best Friend Tom
During his stay in Chicago, Tom seemingly forgot about Adam. Many years had passed since they last saw each other and in these years many things happened and changed.
Tom had found himself a nice job and started living a luxurious lifestyle. His apartment had nearly everything that qualifies you as a wealthy and successful person. But Tom never forgot his roots. Most of his furniture was made of wood, and ordered over the internet. He always told his colleagues that he liked the smell of the wood. You’d think that one would buy a better set of furniture and carpets and whatnot but this wasn’t the case with Tom.
Being the envy of your coworkers is a nightmare, as Tom would tell you. It isn’t easy. Everyone is trying to cut you off and laying fatal traps in your path. And you can only sidestep and dodge their plans and tricks for only so long. Tom had a promotion lined up in his sights, he was determined to get it. But his foot got caught in a figurative trap and he was fired from his job.
He had fell on hard-times. He had to move out of his apartment and into a cheaper, more affordable one. Luckily, he had some money saved on which he was able to live off. Securing a job employment is synonymous with a meteorite falling from space right next to you: it’s almost impossible. By then, almost every major Tech firm in the city had a copy of Tom’s resume.
Despite this, he was still unemployed. The depression was in his pursuit and it had finally caught him down. He had hit the rock bottom.
It had been a few months since he was fired from his job, since his fall from grace. He lived in a apartment which was less than the shadow of his previous apartment. Piles upon piles or dirty clothes and empty boxes of pizza and fast food littered his apartment. He had to sell most of his furniture except a bed and few wooden chairs. He could care less about them right now, but he kept them as mementos of a seemingly previous life.
One night, he had a dream.
It was in itself a rare occurrence as he rarely dreamt those days.
He met an old forgotten friend in his dream. They conversed and caught up. Adam was sad to learn about Tom’s recent misfortunes and asked Tom to visit him. It had been while since he had seen Adam, so he decided to visit him.
As he drove up his home-street, nostalgia came rushing back and overwhelmed him. He remembered the spot where he and Jerry planted Adam and arrived there, only to find houses built there. It was the last straw for Tom.
Although he had forgotten Adam, he had not forgotten all the memories they shared. Even though Adam could not talk, could not move, yet he could talk, he could move.
It was already midnight when Tom arrived home. Making his way through the piles of trash littered around, he crashed on his bed and immediately fell asleep.
And in his dream, Adam appeared once more. Adam revealed that he had never left Tom alone, even Tom forgot him completely. In fact, Adam was with him right there in his apartment. Tom woke up sweating through his bed-sheets and breathing heavily. He could not believe the dream, it was completely absurd. And as he turned around, he saw the letter T carved right in the middle of the bed. Tom had assumed that it was made by the manufacturer of the bed, unaware that he was the very one who had carved it. It was Adam.
Tears streamed down his cheek as he realized his best friend had never left his side.
With renewed strength and motivation, Tom once again applied for a job. Impressed by his resume, the execs at an international tech firm hired him for a spot which was a multitude of times better than his previous job. And so, Tom tried once again and attained well-deserved successes.
Tom and his best friend Adam lived happy ever after!
