Snowflakes Are Useful Idiots: Recommended Reading List #2

This is the second list of reading resources relating to the Marxist influence in American universities, which I first addressed in my April 13th Snowflakes Are Useful Idiots -- And Doomed.

I have included a paragraph or three to provide a quick snapshot of the articles listed.

  • Blount, Dave. Universities Require “Diversity Statements” Consisting of Pledges to Advance Leftist Ideology
  • In the interests of achieving an even higher degree of ideological homogeneity, universities have been requiring faculty to make “diversity statements.” These are essentially loyalty oaths to leftism:

These statements have strong ties to liberal ideology, such as the assumption of group victimization and claims for group-based entitlements, effectively making them “partisan litmus tests” to “weed out non-left wing scholars,” the [Oregon Association of Scholars] states in its report.
As you might expect, these loyalty oaths require approval of sexual depravity and disapproval of white people and Western Civilization.

  • Cravatts, Richard L. Who may say what about whom at Wellesley
  • Modern-day Torquemadas weaponize potential hurt feelings by suppressing free speech

Something alarming is happening on campuses, fueled by tendentious and morally self-righteous progressive students, and some faculty, who have displayed a shocking disregard for the university’s cardinal virtue of free expression, deciding themselves who may say what about whom on their respective campuses—and purging from campuses those ideas they have deemed too hateful, too unsafe, too incendiary to tolerate or to allow to be heard.

  • Gunter, Mitchell. Clemson set to roll out mandatory diversity course this fall
  • Chief Diversity Officer Lee Gill made the announcement in an email to students addressing the “efforts to create an even more welcoming and inclusive environment” promised by President James Clements.

Alexander Cullen, the President of Clemson Young Americans for Liberty (YAL), expressed outrage over the proposed course additions, saying they pushing a politically correct viewpoint on students.

“College marks a time for an exploration of one’s values,” he argued. “If Clemson claims to be an institution of higher learning, it should not be indoctrinating students.”

  • Heine, Debra. Claremont Snowflakes Write Hairbrained Open Letter Characterizing Truth as a 'Myth'
  • Campus snowflakes are at war with reality.

That is the only way to read an open letter written by three students who say the idea of objective truth is a "myth" designed to "silence oppressed peoples." The authors, Dray Denson, Avery Jonas, and Shanaya Stephenso, along with over twenty co-signers, are demanding that all five Claremont Colleges “take action” against the conservative journalists on the staff of The Claremont Independent, presumably for reporting facts that make them feel unsafe.

  • Horn, Michael. University Snowflake Tarnishes Pro-Life Memorial
  • The culprit, a student named Keaton Aspell, apparently has the self-control of a child, because he informed the newspaper that when he saw the pro-life display this past Wednesday, he felt so disgusted that had to immediately a throw temper tantrum and tear the crosses from their resting.

Mommy and daddy clearly did not hug little Keaton enough before sending him out into the grown up world. Poor baby.

  • Huber, Dave. Arizona State U. prof allows class to hold anti-Trump protest instead of taking final exam
  • The “rigor” of this project entailed students standing shoulder-to-shoulder near the ASU library and holding up letters which formed the phrase “Wall Against Hate!”

  • Ludwig, E. Jeffrey. Repudiating the Obama Vision for Higher Education
  • Yet, we have voted for change. We have a new administration. This leftist agenda for higher education was embraced by a leftist White House and a leftist U.S. Department of Education under Arne Duncan. Now we have some new, freedom-loving leaders in the Executive Branch, presumably people who believe that we are still the land of opportunity and wish to enlarge that opportunity. The vision in the report must be repudiated and replaced. Hopefully, in the months ahead, we shall see the government publicly embrace other visions of education based on traditional concerns about the knowledge needed for citizenship, vocation, and rational individuality. Instead of collective consciousness, let us rely upon traditional patriotism and upon character building based on ideals such as “love your neighbor as yourself.”

  • McCarthy, Patricia. Since when did people start going to college to get stupid?
  • Real life these days is stranger than fiction. Even Orwell could not have imagined how far we have surpassed all he imagined in 1984 – especially on college campuses. Higher education in America has been utterly destroyed by the left since the tenured radicals of the 1960s took control of it. Now our campuses are virtually totalitarian in nature. Stanford just admitted an applicant who is not black but who wrote "Black Lives Matter" a hundred times on his application. Forget all the serious students who took the application question – "What matters to you and why?" – seriously. They are toast, cast upon the funeral pyre of diversity and freedom of thought in favor of the anti-merit (racist), pro-ethnic diversity but anti-diversity of thought mindset of college admissions officials.

  • Moran, Rick. Student government votes to allow the American flag to be removed from meetings
  • The University of California-Davis's student senate voted to allow the removal of the American flag from its meetings... Any idiot can see where this is headed...

The problem isn't so much that one or two people will object to displaying the flag. It's that there will be intimidation to force others to go along with it. That's the true fascism on the loose on college campuses – the forced acceptance of a minority viewpoint through intimidation and threatened ostracizing of anyone who disagrees.

  • Pauker, Paul. The Fallacy of ‘Openness and Tolerance’
  • Moreover, progressives and liberals are not tolerant of people they oppose; Democratic politicians, the media, the entertainment industry, and the universities are constantly vilifying and condemning those who hold opposing positions on not only Islam and immigration but also climate change, affirmative action, gun control, abortion, gay marriage, "gender identity," and other issues. And this vilification and condemnation includes a nonstop effort to label any criticism of these issues (Islam, immigration, et cetera) as hate speech. In short, tolerance is not a value that progressives and liberals actually practice; the word "tolerance" is a weapon used to silence conservatives.

  • Prestigiacomo, Amanda. Public High School Censors Student's Article Criticizing Safe Spaces
  • New Hartford High School junior Richard Falvo told The Daily Wire that he submitted a piece called "Why New Hartford Needs To Stop Labeling Classrooms As 'Safe Spaces'" for his "Prime Time Politics" column in advance for approval, but was met with strong pushback.

"I write a column titled 'Prime Time Politics' where I address my opinion about various political events," Falvo told The Daily Wire. "This past week I decided to write about why I believe safe spaces are a threat to both the education of students and why they also hinder a teacher's ability to teach. However, my school wanted nothing to do with my opinion. After multiple English teachers and faculty members at the head of the school discussed my article, they came to the conclusion that the tone of my article could be 'too harsh' for some students to read."
In other words, Falvo's piece suggesting "safe space" culture can seriously hinder learning by censoring ideas was censored.

  • Vadum, Matthew. Campus Fascism Rising
  • Although universities and colleges are supposed to be places where ideas are exchanged and challenged, they are easily the most reactionary institutions in modern American society. Confronting the established wisdom there is a career-ender. Free speech exists in theory but only within the narrowest of prescribed limits. Speakers who violate the politically correct canon are shouted down, demonized, and assaulted. Truly new ideas are anathema in the academy, at least in the humanities and social sciences.

Question identity politics, the cult of multiculturalism, or the evil inherent in white people and America, and your life in academia will be over before it begins.
