The 20 rules of conduct of the Indians

"We have to take a break from time to time and wait until our souls have caught up with us again."

... one of the most important Indian thoughts at this time.

The Indians probably knew/know a lot about life. And they upheld their values, such as harmony with nature and mutual respect.

It is true that there has not been a single code of conduct across all tribes. But most of the points can be found in different versions. For example, the Intertribal Times published the following 20 rules in 1994.

  1. Stand up with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit will listen if you only speak.
  2. Be tolerant of those who have lost their way. Ignorance, arrogance, anger, jealousy and greed spring from a lost soul.
  3. Pray that they will find their bearings again.
  4. Search for yourself, for yourself and through yourself. Do not allow others to determine your way. It is your way and yours alone. Others may accompany you for a while. But no one can take it for you.
  5. Treat guests in your house with respect. Give them the best food, the best bed and respect.
  6. Don't take anything that doesn't belong to you - be it from a person, a community, the wilderness or a culture. It was neither deserved nor given to you. It's not yours.
  7. Respect all things and living beings on this earth, plants as well as humans.
  8. Honour the thoughts, desires and words of other people. Don't interrupt them. Allow each person to express themselves.
  9. Never speak ill of others. The negative energy you let into the universe will multiply when it returns to you.
  10. All people make mistakes. And all mistakes can be forgiven.
  11. Bad thoughts make the body and mind sick. Be optimistic.
  12. Nature does not exist FOR us, it is a PART of us, a part of our worldwide family.
  13. Children are the seeds of the future. Plant love in their hearts and pour it with wisdom, with what you have learned in your life. If they're bigger, give them the room to grow.
  14. Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of this pain will come back to you.
  15. Always be honest. Sincerity is the test of our will in this universe.
  16. Keep your balance. Your physical, mental, psychological and spiritual self... You need all of them to be healthy and powerful. Train your body to strengthen your mind. Wax spiritually to heal emotional wounds.
  17. Decide who you want to surround yourself with. And always take responsibility for your actions.
  18. Respect the privacy and personal space of others.
  19. Be honest and good to yourself. You can't help others unless you help yourself.
  20. Respect the faith of others and do not try to impose yours on them.
  21. Share your happiness and prosperity with others.

What do you think about the 20 rules of conduct of the Indians?
