NaNoWriMo - I Started Writing a Book, on Halloween

Although Unfinished Stories is kind of my trade mark, it's sometimes nice to get out of your comfort zone and show the world ( and yourself ) that you're full of surprises.

and good at exaggeration ;>)

Yesterday, I read the latest post by @Inuke - a funny write up on Indian horror movies - and I checked the comments, where @sayee told him the following:

I was wondering about asking you whether you are going to attempt the NaNoWriMo this year

to which @inuke replied:

Hahaha, I am the kind of Person who barely manage to write few words a month that too when he is free and bored out of his mind. NaNoWriMo is little far fetched for me especially when I am going back to Island in two weeks. :-)

This guy knows himself pretty well and believe me if I tell you that he has a valid reason to not partake in the National Novel Writing month ( starting tomorrow, November the first ). I know myself pretty well too. And - to be honest - I do not have a good reason to not give this a serious try. To be more precise, I have tried to write a book several times before, made it to 40 pages about a decade ago ( lost these on an old hard disk - long live the digital age! ) but never managed to come close to the finish line.

Then again, I never tried my hand on NaNoWriMo, although I considered it a couple of times. My younger brother, who is a game maker, actually did take part in it and tried to talk me into it, several times, without success. This time he didn't try to do so, although we discussed it months ago. I'm sure he's distracted himself, has plenty of other things to do, but I decided to go for the nanowrimo challenge myself. In fact, I made this decision today. I guess it helped that I did some decent writing ( about 1500 words ) this morning, trying to kickstart what felt like a desperate attempt at a book.

Those who know me, will probably wonder if I'm gonna stay true to my word and actually finish this story. Will I even make it through a month of daily writing? Time will tell, I can't predict the future, although I have a vivid imagination. I know though that having this blog as an outlet, as a place to share my creativity, test projects and receive feedback or a well-meant kick to my ass, will be extremely helpful.

I'm not sure yet how much of my writing I'll share on here. Can't help but feeling that sharing too much - and waiting for a response - is just gonna slow me down, perhaps even demotivate me. I promise to share some bits and pieces though. After all, I consider this place to be a source of inspiration, education and sometimes entertainment ( depending on your taste and sense of humor ) for you, my readers, fans, acquaintances, family, fellow Steemians and so on. So here's a fragment of what I wrote today:

I know this is just a beginning, but it gives you an idea of what to expect: a work of fiction that is very much me.

In fact, if you've been visiting my blog for a while, you will recognize the first word in this book's ( current ) title: 'Hypersensitivosaurus'. This is a character that I invented about a month ago, while working on a game. I even tried to make a follow up to this game, titled Hypersensitivosaurus - Lost in the Darkosaur - but lost focus and the energy to improve my game making / programming skills. It's now a couple of weeks later and I got back to watching movies and blogging about this, as well as to writing. It all lead to this. The start of a Hypersensitivosaurus novel.

Just now, I visited https://nanowrimo.org/ and made an account there to commit to the novel writing even more. I discovered that the aim is to make it to 50,000 words, which comes down to an average word count of about 1,700 a day. I am close to that amount, today and - officially - NaNoWriMo only starts tomorrow. Whether I make it to 50,000 words at the end of November or not, I'm up for this challenge. I feel it's gonna be fun and I'm glad to have finally found the right amount of motivation. It also helps that the weather looks like this today:

P.S. If you're taking part in NaNoWriMo yourself, please let me know and we can try to motivate each other to keep going.
