Winter is coming and most creatures have their underground burroughs prepared, however this Chipmunk has decided to take a shortcut!
"Hello There"

"Peek-a-boo"
I happened to be sitting on my back porch, when out of the corner of my eye I caught movement at this bird house. Now the tree is only about 16 feet from my porch, so I get a closeup view of the activity in the tree.
I waited and sure enough this little chipmunk kept peeking it's head out to see what I was up to. I quickly came inside to get my camera and make my way close enough to get a clear picture without spooking him.
"Getting Curious"
As I slowly walked closer to the tree, he stretched his little head out farther to keep a close eye on me. I could see that he was a little nervous and unsure of what I was going to do.

"Exchanging Hello's"
It took me a few minutes to make my way to the front of the bird house to get this cute picture. Even though he was nervous, I think he realized that I was not threatening him in any way.
He actually sat there in the house opening as I softly greeted him. I left some dried pumpkin and sunflower seeds at the base of the tree for him to enjoy later.
Two months have passed since the first sighting of this little Chipmunk. He has surely taken up full residence in the birdhouse. I often see him sitting in the opening watching what is happening in the yard from his high vantage point.
This has been a first for me, as I never would have imagined that a Chipmunk would make a birdhouse his permanent home. I worry about the super low temperatures of the Winter months ahead, wondering if he will stay warm enough. Only time will tell, I know this little guy very well now by his unusual tail. It is missing some of the fur right in the middle of it.
Come Spring, I will be watching closely to see if this little one makes an appearance when the weather breaks. I think an update will have to be posted when he does. ;-)
