In a last ditch effort to stop Donald Trump from coming to power on January 20th, 2017 there has been a Change.org petition created and signed by over 4 million people at the time of writing this article. The petition is just 500K signatures short of his 4.5 million signature goal.
Electoral College: Make Hillary Clinton President on December 19
The petition urges Electoral College Electors in 24 states that allow them to vote how they wish regardless of who their state voted for to vote for Clinton and the Electors in other states to face financial fines for voting against their state. Their justification for these Electors to ignore the popular vote in their respective red states would be that Hillary won the popular vote.
Hillary won the popular vote. The only reason Trump "won" is because of the Electoral College. But the Electoral College can actually give the White House to either candidate. So why not use this most undemocratic of our institutions to ensure a democratic result?
If these Electors were to actually vote for Clinton over Trump on Dec 19th it would mark the first time ever that the Electoral College reversed the expected outcome.
So Steemians, what do you think? What would you do if you were an Elector in a red state? Is this just butthurt Clinton supporters attempting to steal the election or is this a legitimate political tactic taking advantage of the same Electoral College system that lost Hillary the election despite winning the popular vote?
