Train Derailment in India Kills More Than 100

A mangled heap of coaches was all that was left of a train in India, after one of the most horrific train accidents in recent memory.

India has an extensive rail network which serves as a lifeline in this country of more than a billion, but the quality of maintenance has always been called into question. This was demonstrated at the latest train accident which so far has already claimed more than a hundred lives, while more than 200 have been injured critically or are in a bad shape.

As of writing, rescue work was still on as the mangled coaches are being cut open to rescue passengers trapped inside. The train was travelling to Patna, the capital of the state of Bihar, and the accident took place at night around 3:00 AM, when most of the passengers were sleeping.

Though the official report are yet to come, the accident is being blamed on “rail fracture” or a crack in the railway tracks which develop after the stress of daily usage.

On being interviewed by a TV channel, one of the survivors said the following:

This happened while we were sleeping, in seconds our coach was a mangled heap. The lights went out and there was thick smoke and dust inside the coach. Soon, everyone was wailing. We were completely shocked and none dared to move out till rescue team reached near the doors and windows and helped us come out.
