Currently we are setting up a community kitchen Garden in a residential neighborhood in Patna,Bihar. The Kitchen garden is set up on a plot which was being used as a common waste ground by the community. By creating a community kitchen garden we want to bridge the gap between producers and consumers of food in cities to achieve urban food security and develop healthy, social neighborhoods which can produce whole or part of their food. We are growing vegetables organically on Permaculture principles.
The final aim of the community garden project is to create a closed loop of food production and consumption, the food that is being produced in the garden is being consumed by the residents living nearby, the residents in return produce kitchen waste which is converted into compost and that compost is being utilised to grow more food.
The pilot also aims to promote regenerative agriculture which regenerates ecology of places where there are no vegetation.Case in point the waste dumping ground where we now have a functioning food garden. It took us 2 months to be productive on a barren piece of land when we started to mimic various ecological design principales.
