This photo was taken in Ilulissat, Western Greenland. I was on a boatrip around midnight on the Kangia Icefjord. Kangia was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2004. One of the wonders of the world, along with Taj Mahal and the pyramids in Egypt. The glacier that provides all this ice, is the largest glacier on the northern hemisphere. 5 km. wide and 1100 meter thick. It flows an average of 20 meters daily, amounting 20 cubic km. annually or 20 million tons per day – enough to supply New York with water for a year! There is no other boat on this photo, but look at the bird in the air and you will get an idea of how huge it is.
