Architecture - Round Tower an architectural gem in the middle of Copenhagen

DSC_01.jpg

The photos are taken in a very special tower in Copenhagen - Rundetårn - meaning «Round Tower». It was built on the initiative of King Christian IV of Denmark who started the project in 1637. Five years later it was finished. He tried to set up an astronomical observatory, a library and a church for university students. On the very top you will find the astronomical observatory, which is considered the oldest in Europe. It is possible to take a walk on a gangway outside the tower to get the view of the city of Copenhagen.

The inside of the tower is amazing. No stairs, but a 209 meter long ramp swings seven and a half laps to reach the highest part - a spiral "snail" that winds around a hollow core all the way to the top. The reason for this was because they had to use horses to transport heavy scientific instruments up to the observatory at the top.

I took the photos somewhere on the way up. I had to press my back against the wall and use wide angle to be able to take photos showing the whole ramp.

People were walking up and down. I spent a long time taking photos of people. I changed to black & white in order to highlight the silhouettes of the people who walked past me, as I think that is a better choice than colors.

One of the original photos in color. The tower is all white inside. Half way there is a small museum and the observatory is also worth a visit.

This is how it looks like from the outside.

The view from the top.

The observatory on the top.

Architecturally, the tower stands out from other similar buildings from the same period in that this building does not contain stairs. I was quite impressed when I think of when it was built. It is one of the top attractions in Copenhagen, located right in the heart of Copenhagen.
