Overgrowth in Fort de la Chartreuse, Belgium

Fort de la Chartreuse in Luik / Liège was built in 1817 by the Dutch, but was then taken over by Belgian people in 1830. Because of its strategic location (close to multiple country borders) the building played an important role in the second World War. It has been used by German soldiers as a prison. In the end it was abandoned, since 1980.

I visited Fort de la Chartreuse in 2013. In the pictures, you can see what 33 years of abandonment does to a building. Nature takes over! Nature is strong! Nature takes back what has been taken from it. Trees are growing from inside the building through the windows and roof. The walls are now covered in loads of green as well. The ground is covered in weed and different kinds of plants.

It is kind of amazing.

Fort de la Chartreuse can be found close to the city of Luik / Liège (since Belgium has two official languages, Dutch and French, city names often have 2 ways of writing). The insides of this amazing fort are full of graffiti, and I will probably show you the rest of this amazing urban exploration session in a different post :-)
