Empty streets and a lone gondoleer

The morning had just begun and a lone gondoleer is preparing for a long day of steering ahead. There were few people out at this time of the morning. Only a few locals and the odd early riser photographer hoping to capture a glimpse of Venice minus the throng of day tourists, all looking to behold a city so unique.

My wife was feeling under the weather and I had gone out in search of a store to buy her a decent breakfast as our hotel did not provide one. Venice was not on our trip list, it was an after thought and one we were glad we had. One night in this city was not enough and after seeing it through the photos later, my wife was disappointed she missed the morning devoid of people.

This image is cut into four long panels with each reaching the top and bottom extremities. The two hard walls of the canal that frame the shot split in two by the morning sky reflected in the water with the fourth, a sliver of darker action and detail beside. And a bridge to bind the two. It gives length to the shot and an incompleteness that may give the viewer the sense that the scene is still open, more to see beyond the frame caught.

But what lies beyond plays second to the gondoleer standing like a wild west gunslinger. The unassuming focus of an early-rising photographer.
