Its a very nice time to be hiking the front range of mountains here in the Canadian Rockies as the weather is warming up and the senery has amazing variety and range of conditions out in the mountains.

Here you can see the larger deeper mountains are still very snow peaked and although we are starting to get some rain where I live in the foothills (instead of snow) the mountains are still getting dumped on with snow. This makes the avi risk high and so I usually stick to the front range to avoid any risk and enjoy the warmer temperatures.
The variation of snow even here in the hills varies from no snow at all (especially on south faces) to several feet still in many area. makes Route finding more challenging since many routes are completely blocked with snow (even with snow shoes, since its so soft this time of year, you still completely sink in).
Lots of nice warm sport though, we stopped here for lunch.
From rocky ridges and hillsides, to deep deep snowy creek beds, the range of conditions is still massive in the mountains. We had to traverse through this creek valley to get over to another ridge, but I'll say, it was massively tough going. Waste deep snow, all fairly soft so no chance of walking on top of it. Sliding down into the creek was easy, but tough getting back out and up to the next ridge line. Some rugged terrain as well, luckily there was lots of downed trees, so you could walk along them above the snow in a lot of places.
Then up on the ridge, some beatiful conditions, warm sun and dry ground.
Some nice lookouts out from the hunchback hills along some of the cliff bands.
We crossed a old logged forest area and dropped down to another creekbed that had little snow. It was a fun exit out and some amazing huge trees growing in there from the rocks.
The moss is all bright green and soft already in through this whole creek bed area.
More awesome trees gorwing out over the creek.
This one is at least 1.25m (4ft) diameter, a huge beast that has fallen.
My next post I'll show more of the creek and the falls on our exit route from this fun hike.
