The cafe was packed, which was a good sign. The clientele were not the sort I was used to mixing with, however.

My mother would have called them rough but she always was a snob.

They were dressed in work clothes, some of them stained with white - paint or plaster I guessed. Some of them chatted to each other, others sat looking at menus, or at their phones. The guy on the table next to mine, a huge yeti of a man all hair and muscle, talked loudly into his phone. He was telling the person on the other end of the phone - presumably a client - that he was in a builders merchants getting supplies for the job.

I waited patiently to be served but after ten minutes or so I realised that I would have to order at the counter.

"Hello my good man," I said, offering the young chap behind the counter my hand to shake.

He did not take it but shrugged and said, "what do you want?"

"What do you recommend, sir?" I said.

"Meat and gravy is today's special," he said.

"Sounds charming," I said, forcing a smile onto my face. I paid and returned to the table.
