MTB: Come and discover the trails with me đźšµ

Last weekend I’ve been mountain-biking at my favorite single-track in the Netherlands. The track is in the area of a small village called Horst.

Track specifications

Length: 18.5 km
Signing: International MTB sign (red)
Location: You can find the start at the intersection of the streets Lorbaan / Naaldhoutweg in the place called America.

Environment

The forests of Schadijk with a surface from approx. 525 hectares. Staatsbosbeheer manages the largest part from the area. The hilly nature from this area can be explained historically. A long time ago when the forests existed of fields with heather as far as the eye could reach. The local farmers were taking placards out of the heather from which they created fertilizer. The farmland levels raised by the years and because of this the typical ash grounds emerged.

By taking the placards there where sand drifts regularly in the area. Those drifts calmed down against the hedgerows surrounding the farmlands. That’s why there are many hills in this area. At the parking you still can see one of those hedgerows.

Characteristics

Meandering singletracks for almost the full length of this track. In between there are some wider parts, where you can take a breath. The whole track is without any asphalt. The route has been compiled by Staatsbosbeheer and a group of 50 MTB’ers working together. These 50 MTB’ers created a foundation called Mountrainbike Promotie Noord-Limburg.

GPS

Start coordinates are N 51.27.746 / E 6.00.1876

The ride

We left at my place after a cup of coffee (can't live without) and had a 2hr drive before we reached Horst. We left my place with lots of sunshine, but the moment we left Zeeland it started to rain all the way to Horst. Right there we unloaded the bikes from the car and started with the track. First part was our warming-up. Luckily for us it had stopped raining.

My friend searched for the track-record. That is around 43 minutes but most people will ride it around 60 minutes. Just like we did. The reason this is my favorite track, it's not the fastest but the flow is so good! It's like a dream.

They just improved the tracks because all the sand loosened after the heatwave. Now with the rain and the good care of Staatsbosbeheer and the foundation the track was in a great shape. Thanks for the good work!

We did ride the track twice but the second time was to record some shots for the video. Halfway it started to rain cats and dogs. So the second round wasn't the fastest. But we did ride a few kilometers more than the first round thanks to the filming.

We ended the day with a piece of cake and of course a coffee!
