Trick or Treat (#fiftywords)

Melanie hurried home, her pulse quickening, the darkness broken by flames flickering behind jagged teeth and evil eyes. One of them winked at her —the pumpkins were alive!

Silhouettes rose tall and blocked her path. She ran, screaming, and tripped over her feet as cheerful voices shrieked, "Trick or treat!"

This little tale was written for @jayna's #fiftywords challenge ~ the prompt for this week is - pumpkin - and there is still time! You can find the challenge behind these blue words! Come, join us! (Not said in a creepy cult-like way, not at all) :D

I was a bit stumped when I first saw the prompt. I know it was brought on because of the month we're in: October! But Halloween hasn't really taken off in Australia yet. It slowlllyyyyyyy is, more and more each year, but it's not something people really care about. It's weird, considering a good portion of us are descended from those who came from where Halloween originated, but, for some reason, we consider it an Americanism... and a lot of us are adverse to Americanisms.

(Though, such thinking seems to have become a thing of the past as we all become connected globally and embrace the holidays of others.)

Apart from Halloweeny things, I tried to do something with the pumpkin as a food, but that didn't really go anywhere, and I'm not the biggest fan of pumpkin unless it's blended with other ingredients in soup-form. Butternut squash with potato and (LOTS of) onion and garlic, soupified! Only way I'll eat it.

The story you just read actually started off with someone painting a picture, comparing the orange sunset to the colour of the pumpkins... but... that wasn't very interesting. I was going to have her paint pictures that spring to life; still not interesting enough. But... pumpkins coming to life? That reminded me of an old Goosebumps book and I had to do something with it, hehe. (Thanks, R.L.Stein!)

Anyway, hope you liked it! :) Thank you for reading!
