Woke up this morning and my son ran to be to say "Happy Fathers Day Daddy!", so sweet! He waited for me to wake up to have breakfast with him and gave me my presents.
There was one magnet photo frame with his photo on it to hang on the fridge door:
A second photo frame so I can put a family photo inside along with a mug for me to have my morning coffee (see photo at the top) and a card he made at school:
San wanted to have more rocket stove fun so we went to Bunnings to buy an axe so I could split some of the wood logs I collected many months ago to build a Bee Hotel, I will keep selected ones for that project and all the rest will be fuel for the stove.
We chose a Fiskars X7 chopping axe which was recommended by another customer. It's made in Finland and was very well built, the blade was sharp and the whole axe is very well balanced, lightweight, thin and very sharp. It is dearer than the other axes in display but I rather pay a bit more for some good quality tools that will get the job done properly. I hesitated between the X7 and the X17 but I ended up choosing the smaller X7 because it can easily be handled one hand for cutting branches. The logs I want to split are very small so it will be OK.
San wanted to learn so I showed him how to handle it to cut some small branches.

We filled a 20L bucket with some good fuel for the rocket stove.
I made some little tweaks to the rocket stove / BBQ combo design again. I spotted some little flaws last time:
- On the BBQ side, two layers of bricks was too much and the grill was sitting too high above the coal. So I replace the second layer with another layer of thinner bricks.
- I don't need the front of the BBQ side, I left an opening because I was in a rocket stove mindset but I won't be feeding wood in so I better close that opening to not let the heat escape. The opening below the wire mesh is enough to bring oxygen in.
The design change done, we used the BBQ area as a fire pit to warm us up. I made some hot chocolate for San, coffee for me and black tea for mum. At the end we used the remaining heat from the rocket stove to grill some chestnuts.
Even hot beverages made with a rocket stove taste different, the smoke is kind of penetrate the sauce pan and also gives a nice taste to the beverages. The only downside is that at the end your whole body and clothe smell of smoke 🤣🤣🤣.
