From the rains of Caleta Tortel, the small village with the wooden walkways, we moved north again, to Cochrane, taking the reverse route, on the other hand the "carretera austral" is unique and there were no alternatives!
The next day, early in the morning, we took another bus and snoozing, with one eye open and one closed, at about 9.00 we were already in Puerto Rio Tranquilo, a small town on the shores of Lake General Carrera.
Dalle piogge di Caleta Tortel, il piccolo paese dalle passarelle di legno, ci siamo spostati nuovamente verso nord, a Cochrane, rifacendo la via inversa, d'altra parte la “carretera austral” è unica e non c'erano alternative!
Il giorno dopo, di buon ora, abbiamo preso un altro bus e sonnecchiando, con un occhio aperto e uno chiuso, alle 9.00 circa eravamo già a Puerto Rio Tranquilo, piccolo paese sulle sponde del Lago General Carrera.
Luckily it wasn't raining (small miracle) and we immediately reached the camping-hostal Bellavista, where we had booked. Small, modest but everything was there, common kitchen, rooms, garden area for tents, living area. We were offered a warm cappuccino while we waited for the room to be ready, given the rather early morning hours. But, not even time to put our luggage down that someone was looking for us: how was that possible? "Estan aqui dos italianos....": how cool, I thought, someone knows us or more simply they are looking for someone else.
Per fortuna non piove (piccolo miracolo) e abbiamo raggiunto subito il camping-hostal Bellavista, dove avevamo prenotato. Piccolo, modesto ma c'era tutto, cucina comune, stanze, zona giardino per le tende, area soggiorno. Ci hanno offerto un caldo cappuccino finché aspettavamo che la stanza fosse pronta, visto l'orario mattutino piuttosto presto. Ma, nemmeno il tempo di appoggiare i bagagli che qualcuno ci cercava: com'era possibile? “Estan aqui dos italianos....”: che forte, ho pensato, qualcuno ci conosce o più semplicemente cercano qualcun'altro.
But no! As soon as we got off the bus we had talked to some guys from the "Turismo Rio Tranquilo" agency to get information about the boat tour to go see the marble caves, which are the fantastic attraction of this place. We were just talking and they had explained the tour to us, with no commitment. But as soon as we reached the minimum number of people to start the boat they came immediately to pick us up. Voracious entrepreneurial spirit you may say, but we saw it as a great kindness: home recovery without extras, and knowledge of the area, because to enjoy the tour the weather must be discreet and the waters of the lake calm. In fact, the sky was quite gray and it could rain at any moment.
Invece no! Appena scesi dall'autobus avevamo parlato con alcuni ragazzi dell'Agenzia “Turismo Rio Tranquilo” per prendere informazioni sul tour in barca per andare a vedere le grotte di marmo, che sono la fantastica attrazione di questo posto. Stavamo solo parlando e loro ci avevano illustrato la gita, senza impegno. Ma appena raggiunto il numero minimo di persone per far partire la barca sono venuti immediatamente a prenderci. Vorace spirito imprenditoriale direte voi, ma noi l'abbiamo vista come una grande gentilezza: recupero a domicilio senza extra, e conoscenza del territorio, perchè per gustarsi il tour il tempo deve essere discreto e le acque del lago tranquille. In effetti il cielo era abbastanza grigio e poteva piovere da un momento all'altro.

Finally we were approaching the destination: these beautiful caves, famous all over the world, which are small islands that are located near the shore and that for their conformation are called Catedral de Mármol, Capilla de Mármol and Caverna de Mármol.
A pilotare la barca, aperta per poter permettere una visuale a 360°, c'era Capitano Guillermo che questa volta però non mi ha fatto guidare!
Finalmente ci stavamo avvicinando alla destinazione: queste bellissime grotte, famose in tutto il mondo, che sono degli isolotti che si trovano vicini alla riva e che per la loro conformazione si chiamano Catedral de Mármol, Capilla de Mármol e Caverna de Mármol.
The presence of these rocks appeared for the first time in the documents of the Italian-Argentine explorer Clemente Onelli, who was traveling between 1896 and 1897 on behalf of the Argentine government to draw a precise map of the borders between Chile and Argentina.
The beginning of the geological process that allows today's visitor to observe this great beauty dates back to about 370 million years ago, when the Aysen Region was a tropical zone, covered by a shallow sea, in which over time, a large layer of calcium formed. Then, the geological structure of the place, affected by large increases in temperature and strong internal pressures, gave rise to the metamorphic phenomenon, whereby calcium was transformed into marble.
La presenza di queste rocce è apparsa per la prima volta nei documenti dell'esploratore italo-argentino Clemente Onelli che stava viaggiando tra il 1896 e il 1897 su incarico del governo Argentino per delineare una mappa precisa dei confini tra Cile e Argentina.
L'inizio del processo geologico che permette al visitatore di oggi di osservare si grande bellezza risale a circa 370 milioni di anni, quando la Regione dell'Aysen era zona tropicale, coperta da un mare poco profondo, nel quale nel tempo, si formò un grande strato di calcio. Poi, la struttura geologica del luogo, colpita da grandi aumenti di temperatura e forti pressioni interne, diede vita al fenomeno metamorfico, per cui il calcio si trasformò in marmo.
These are formations of calcium carbonate eroded over time by wind and water, which have designed these spectacular sculptures, where you can also enter with small boats. They told us that in the capilla it is even possible to get married! Romantic. Isn't it?
Si tratta dunque di formazioni di carbonato di calcio erose nel tempo dal vento e dall'acqua, che hanno disegnato queste sculture spettacolari, dove si può anche entrare con piccole imbarcazioni. Ci hanno raccontato che nella capilla è addirittura possibile sposarsi! Romantico. No?
They were declared Santuario de la Naturaleza in 1994, which means they are a protected area for their conservation. And they really deserve it, they look like works of art sculpted by a surrealist artist and painted with iridescent colors that change with the reflection of the water and the sun. And the minerals, bright mica, calcium, clay, crystals, carbon remains, quartz, in their infinite crossings of shades make the rest of the magic. Because there are not enough words to name every color!
Sono state dichiarate Santuario della Naturaleza nel 1994 e questo significa che sono zona protetta per la loro conservazione. E se lo meritano proprio, sembrano opere d'arte scolpite da un artista surrealista e dipinte con colori iridescenti che cambiano con il riflesso dell'acqua e del sole. E i minerali, mica brillante, calcio, argilla, cristalli, resti di carbonio, quarzo, nei loro infiniti incroci di sfumature fanno il resto della magia. Perchè non esistono abbastanza parole per dare il nome ad ogni colore!
The trip lasted about an hour and a half, and on the way back the captain was rocketing over the waves, so much so that it felt like being on a roller coaster. Instead, the mountains appeared in front of us, majestic and gray, with snow-capped peaks, while down here, we in the boat were holding on tightly not to fall, and as usual, we Italians were the only ones laughing out loud!
La gita è durata circa un'ora e mezza e al ritorno il capitano volava a razzo sulle onde, tanto che sembrava di essere sulle montagne russe. Invece le montagne ci apparivano davanti, maestose e grigie, con le cime innevate, mentre quaggiù, noi nella barca ci reggevamo forte per non cadere, e come al solito, a ridere a crepapelle, eravamo solo noi italiani!
