Tec Diving to 55m/180ft at Hole in the Wall

tec diving Hole in the Wall Roatan Honduras

FUN FACT: Scuba diving with four tanks makes you four times cooler!

Tec Instructor Monty Graham from Roatan Tec Center cruises with me at 55m/180ft at the Hole in the Wall dive site in Roatan, Honduras. After dropping through a massive swim-through at 33m/110ft (the famous First Hole), we followed the half-pipe shaped canyon down towards the Second Hole, a large dark crescent-shaped lip another 22m/70ft below. The Second Hole was packed with horse-eyed jacks spiraling above a sheer box canyon that dropped straight down to a shelf far below.

The wall plummets precipitously into the Cayman Trench. We leveled off at 55m/180ft and practiced our gas shutdown drills while dangling above the black-blue darkness. We swam around the massive coral outcropping that protrudes to the north of the Second Hole, rolling over to observe the 18 story coral mountain looming above.

Narcosis was definitely a HUGE factor on this dive!! I incorrectly added 27 + 5 = 33 while trying to do decompression table math while hovering over the abyss! There is a big difference narcosis-wise in the 5m/15ft between 50m/150ft and 55m/180ft!

EXTRA FUN FACT: Monty recovered a bottle of wine he hid at 45m/150ft on his last tec dive to Hole in the Wall, and we replaced it with a new wax-sealed one. The recovered wine smelled like a fermented dead animal. Yum.

Thanks Coconut Tree Divers for this amazing dive expedition. #not-bent
