Qurator's Photo Friday Competition #100 - Icebergs

100.jpg

This photo was taken in Ilulissat, Western Greenland. I was doing a hike to the Kangia Icefjord. Along the way you will see impressive, large icebergs floating on the water. Kangia was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2004. One of the wonders of the world, along with Taj Mahal and the pyramids in Egypt. From our guide we learned some amazing facts about this fjord: The glacier that provides all this ice, is the largest glacier on the northern hemisphere.  5 km. wide and 1100 meter thick. It flows an average of 20 meters daily, amounting 20 cubic km. annually or  20 million tons per day – enough to supply New York with water for a year!
