High time I dedicate a post to one of my all-time favorite tv shows.
Firefly is a sci-fi show that aired in 2002-2003. It is the brain child of Joss Whedon. Wikipedia calls it a space western drama and IMDB categorizes it as adventure, drama and sci-fi. Fans would probably call it the best damn show in the verse. Pardon my french. Which isn't one of the languages in the show. See in this universe, they don't only speak English, they also speak Chinese, which you mostly notice when the characters swear.
Firefly was aired by Fox and cancelled after the first season. Much to the dismay of many loyal fans, the crew and the actors. According to many, reasons for cancellation were the episodes getting airing out of order (the pilot, which sets the stage for the rest of the show, didn't get aired until the end of the show) and a friday night slot on Fox. I would have to believe that's true, because I cannot understand what other reason there is for cancelling this particular show. It is one of the best ones, if not the very best one, I have ever seen. If you go by numbers, the 9,1 rating it has on IMDB should tell you enough.
In 2005, the movie Serenity got released. Same crew, same verse, same high quality. It gave a bit of closure, though to this day, the fans still want more.
Firefly centers around captain Malcom Reynolds (Mal), brilliantly played by Nathan Fillion. Mal is a war veteran where he fought together with Zoe. After that, they got themselves a spaceship (Firefly class), found a pilot (the very lovable Wash) and got themselves a mechanic (the even more lovable Kaylee). Together with fighter for hire and gun enthousiast Jayne (his favorite gun is called Vera), they travel the universe to find and do jobs that pay. Anything to keep them floating. They rent out one of their shuttles to Inara, who is a professional companion. She opens some doors to them which otherwise would be closed and she's considered part of the family.
In the first episode we see the crew picking up some passengers. They're transporting them for money, but things go awry, after which they end up expanding their crew with shepherd Book, the doctor Simon Tam and his mysterious sister River. This pilot episode basically introduces all the characters and sets the stage for the rest of the show.
In later episodes, they get in all sorts of trouble. Partly because of the jobs they do, partly because of the myserious, ruthless Reavers and partly because of River's past.
This show has many great features. There's suspense, adventure, action, comedy, love and a bit of mystery. A big part of what makes this show so amazing is the bond between the crew members. It's a family. You start to love them and feel for them. You're happy when they're happy, you're sad when they're sad. Even the ship is part of the family, which, to me, is really a great feat to pull off as a show maker. The only other show that made me feel something for a vehicle is Supernatural.
I've watched Firefly many times and every once in a while, I re-watch it. It never gets old and it always feels like coming home.
I have the intro music in one of my Spotify playlists. Every time I hear it, I feel happy, so I'm just going to leave that here for you (and me!) to enjoy.
Now tell me, who's going to watch this show?
