Old thinking
As we all know our right brain is the creative one working on new Steemit ideas, and our left brain is running all the logical parts of our brain, but new research in neuroscience is showing that the division we have in our minds eyes is not so straightforward.
I've seen a human brain at anatomy classes at university, and the first thing that strikes you about it is how similar both the hemispheres are - they appear almost identical. It wasn't until nearly the 20th century that scientists starting working out the working divisions between them.
New thinking
Neueroscientists have been working out why the divisions exist for some time now, and researchers at Ruhr University, Germany have recently published an article in the journal Neuron outlining how it all happens.
To be honest it's all fairly simple. Different tasks are sent to different parts of the brain to allow the tasks to run apart from one another. A bit like a one core CPU running 2 threads. This is what we call in I.T. 'parallel processing'.
Gene experiments have been done to try and discover where this asymmetry comes from, and its been linked to some 30-40 genes which most believe also make us left or right handed. Some studies go further and state that our sex has a hand in the genes that decide our left or right handedness.
Finally, its even been suggested that this asymmetry may switch according to seasonal changes or other cultural norms, so our left/right hand fate is not fixed for life. I best go press 'Post' on this Steemit post now with my left hand!
Steem on - left or right!
