Sound is energy traveling through a medium, this can be the air, water even a solid object. A sound source creates pressure waves by exiting the molecules in the air and that's how it travels in distance. Every sound frequency has a length. It's easy to calculate it, just divide the speed of sound (340.29 m/s) by the frequency. For example 340m divided by 50 cycles equals 6.8 metres (22.31 feet), 60hz = 5.66, 70hz = 4.86 and so on.
Bass is special because you really need a huge diaphragm to create the necessary air pressure. That's why we actually feel the bass more than hear it. An interesting fact is that headphones can't reproduce genuine bass no matter how big or powerful they are, the membrane just isn't big enough. The bass in your headphones is a psychoacoustic effect, in other words your brain is being tricked to hear the low frequencies.
All written above are science facts, but I would like to add this: Girls LOVE the bass! Don't believe me? Just play some videos of chicks responding to bass. Their hair stand up, literally!
